id Software’s John Carmack excited by Apple iPhone possibilities
Friday, July 25, 2008 - 11:00 AM EDT

"While he's best known for creating graphics engines that push systems to their limits, game designer John Carmack is spending a lot of time with mobile gaming these days," Chris Morris reports for Forbes.

"The co-founder of id Software is considered one of the creators of the first-person shooter genre, and his technical influence has kept hardware companies rushing to keep up. So it's a bit surprising that he hasn't yet taken advantage of the most powerful mobile device on the market," Morris reports. "'We wanted to do something for the iPhone, but we just didn't have the scheduling or the resources available,' he says. 'I really regret not having something at launch. We have a title we want to develop exclusively for iPhone. I'm not announcing anything specifically, but it would be a graphical tour de force.'"

"One of the biggest appeals of the iPhone, says Carmack, is that it can handle big games that are 10 megabytes or more. By contrast, the sweet spot for traditional cellphone games was around 300 kilobytes," Morris reports. "That makes the iPhone look like a big open field. The hard part, Carmack concedes, will be reigning himself in. 'The iPhone, as a device, is in the same generation power-wise as the PS2 or Xbox,' he says. "'The graphics are a little lower but the RAM is a lot higher… You could easily spend $10 million on an iPhone game, but the market just can't support that yet.'"

Morris reports, "The company wasn’t quite fast enough to make the iPhone launch, but with a re-energized Carmack leading the charge, it hopes to make up for lost ground in a hurry."

We all are... but what does he think of MobileMess?
That's the big flaw to focus on, instead of cheering up.
It's really like Apple finally beating up MS... but at releasing crap.

is there a problem with the link?

Watch out. When the Id becomes excited, anything can happen.

Jul 25, 08 - 11:25 am Comment from: Switched

id Software haven't released a good game for years.

They've turned into a games engine developer who releases graphics demos to sell their engine.

If iD are looking at the iPhone you can bet other good games developers are too. Half-life on an iPhone? Maybe...

@Mac+

There are other threads where you can carp about MobileMe and be "on topic".

@Mac+

Why in the hell would Cormack give a flying feck about Mobile Me? Id is a game company, not an enterprise service provider.

I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Unless it's Yet Another First Person Shooter. Feh.

"Why in the hell would Cormack give a flying feck about Mobile Me?"

Maybe he's in a Rage over it and thinks Apple should Quake in fear and get Keen on fixing it or they are Doomed?

Jul 25, 08 - 11:54 am Comment from: JAYGEE

Every gaming company should have an iPhone department, so they can all put decent games on the iPhone/iPod touch department.

Apple should send the companies free Macs, if it will help towards more gaming on the touch platforms. Not to many Macs, as Apple doesn't make money by giving Macs away surprised

I think what Mac+ is saying is that top priority should be getting the Mobile Mess fixed. I really don't give a crap about games while I have not had email service for a week now. For us 1%'ers, email is all that matters right now and we are pissed that a company as smart as Apple can't seem to replace a mail server any quicker. Seems like they could just put a new server in and restore the accounts from a back-up. I sure hope they back up. Damn, I'm pissed!

Did I read right? John Carmack excited about something from Apple? I've lost track of how many times I've seen the following headline:

John Carmack blasts Apple for __________________

No doubt about it - John Carmack is talented. But what a freakin' whiner he is! I can't believe that he actually has something positive to say about Apple.

Hell has indeed frozen over.

Jul 25, 08 - 12:00 pm Comment from: Ampar

I think what Mac+ is saying is that Carmack likes turtles.

Jul 25, 08 - 12:20 pm Comment from: fatal

has Carmack outlived his welcome? I mean it seems like he has lost his "street cred" in the gaming world.

Kinda like Gates telling us what the next mode of computing will be. No cred anymore.

MDN - As others have noted, the link does not work. You have a recursive link. See my previous sentence.

Peace.

Jul 25, 08 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Al

All the people that come here whining about their Mobile Mess should have to post their .me address so Apple can get back to them.

MSN addresses won't work in this scenario. You know who you are.

Jul 25, 08 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Ampar

"As others have noted, the link does not work. You have a recursive link."

Yeah, but it's great for bumping up hit counts!

wink

There egos again. Not to psych you out but even when the superego intervenes, I'm afreud to say you're still as Jung as you feel.

Ampar - thanks for the link and the laughs.

Peace.

Namaste, Lurker_PC!

cool grin

(Does anyone actually use their iPhone to make phone calls?)

Jul 25, 08 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Thorin

When I worked for a major Mac refurbishing/reseller company, I kept a PC on the side, just to play this guy's games. I actually re-played GL Quake on my old G4 a few months ago. I rarely play any games, but it was very fun. GL Quake is still one of the scariest games IMO.

Jul 25, 08 - 07:47 pm Comment from: Commander Keen

Let's have it, iD... Commander Keen, updated and released for the iPhone!
