Is Apple CEO Steve Jobs sick?
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 10:42 AM EST

"Does Apple's Steve Jobs have cancer again?" Henry Blodget asks for SIlicon Alley Insider.

"In the photos we saw of yesterday's event, Steve appeared dangerously thin. The most likely explanation, we think, is that Steve permanently changed his diet after his bout with cancer a few years ago. Given that Steve did not believe that cancer needed to be disclosed publicly until after the fact, however, it also seems possible that the weight loss could be an indication that Steve's cancer has reappeared," Blodget writes.

"We hope it hasn't. As we argued here, however, we believe that Steve's cancer should have been disclosed earlier, and--if it ever recurs--should immediately be disclosed. It seems inappropriate to ask Apple to issue a statement confirming that Steve is in perfect health, but we know such a statement would make some of concerned Apple and Steve fans feel better," Blodget writes.

Full article here.

Valleywag's Nicholas Carlson writes, "Doctors diagnosed Apple CEO Steve Jobs with pancreatic cancer in October 2003. Jobs hid the news from Apple shareholders until July 2004 — after he'd explored all other alternatives to surgery, and had to schedule time away from the office to go under the knife. People watching the imperiously slim presenter at the WWDC today are finding it hard to look at Job's frailer-than-ever frame and not wonder if he's still suffering."

Full article, "Apple CEO Steve Jobs looks dangerously thin," here.

MacDailyNews Take: When we first saw Jobs we worried, too. We've since somehow convinced ourselves that "everything's okay," (classic denial, perhaps), but, seriously, we'd really like for Apple to tell us publicly about Steve's "robust health" again, or at least see the results of someone feeding the man, or hear that he just won a marathon somewhere. There's "thin" and there's "too thin." Steve is "too thin" for a man with a past cancer history who has millions of shareholders invested in Apple; many who have invested in the company mostly because of his presence.

Even Drudge this morning has a headline "Concern over APPLE Steve Jobs's physical appearance..." pointing to an AP photo gallery of Jobs on stage yesterday.

Apple need to address this issue again.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:30 am Comment from: STEVE IS FINE, YOU WEIRDOS!

Ludicrous speculation from the Medical Team here at MDN.

Glad to know that just like frickin' doctor idiots the world over, you cant agree.

'He's finished"!
"He's in great shape'!
"he's got litho-chtizo-mania"!
"He's a picture of health"!

He's on a strict vegan diet, I imagine, and probably embraces the low-calorie diets that are popular for longevity.

More to the point, what right have we to speculate in such a crappy way?

He's my frickin' HERO! Leave the Steve Meister alone, you rats!

If it wasnt for Steve, you would all be under the control of BeastMaster Ballmer, the fat f**k of Microsh*t.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:30 am Comment from: PixelDoc

Plz correct if I'm wrong, but per his Stanford Speech and per news briefings at the time, there was concern that he had pancreatic cancer. However, I believe he said that after surgery, it turned out not to be cancer. There are many tumors and growths which occur in the pancreas, as elsewhere, but not all are cancers. There are many benign tumors as well. I don't find any information as to what his true pathologic diagnosis was, but I believe it turned out that it wasn't a cancer.

As for his thinness. Although he may not be purely vegan, he is not unusually thin.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:32 am Comment from: Ampar

Next time Steve won't order the tomato sandwich the night before a keynote at the Moscone Center.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:33 am Comment from: @ Anim8me2

I completely and whole heartedly disagree.

I don't believe that just because someone becomes CEO of a "large international company" that one loses their right to personal privacy (especially one's health). Life is full of unavoidable risk and uncertaintly. No matter what insider information we think we have, we still don't know the day we "expire" until presumably that time arrives.

I wish the best of health to Steve, everyone here, and hope that you all enjoy a long and fulfilling life.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:39 am Comment from: Random Coolzip

Ghandi was thin as a rail and lived until the age of 78 - when he was assassinated. Not comparing him to Jobs, but if you think about it a lot of prominent people who lived a long time were on the thin side.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:40 am Comment from: wiredzen

First, it is dangerous to say that a man's health - his personal business - is inextricably tied to his professional business. Is that a standard you want to set? Stock options or not, Steve Jobs does not owe any explanations of such things. Considering the announcements yesterday, I'd say his ability to continue the progressive path of the company are fine. I do not want work extending it's realm into my personal life, especially when there is no reason to question my performance.

Second, for the handful of vegetarian bashers out there - I am vegetarian, as are many of my friends. Nearing 40, people often mistake me for my early 20's. I am in excellent condition and I live at an elevation of 7,000 feet, so any of you down there with such skewed thinking are welcome to come up here and try working out with me. If you think that vegetarian means sickly, then you know nothing about health and the human body, particularly the digestive system and the negative impacts of meat on it. I do not preach it - no veggie bumper stickers, thank you - because it's a personal choice. And I most certainly do not look frail. So, please, refrain from sharing your ignorance. To quote Ron White - "The next time you have a thought... let it go."

Jun 10, 08 - 11:41 am Comment from: rickw

Let's not forget that Steve is a Vegan Vegetarian. Most Vegans are extremely thin. Mr. Jobs, the only thing to watch for is Vitamin B12 levels. They can fall precipitously on a vegan diet.

However, I do understand the concern of everyone at this time.

Rickw.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: Gandalf

Thin is the correct body shape. Our food has been modified for centuries in order to produce industrial workers requiring strength and stamina rather than speed and accuracy. Body mass index reflects this, the bottom end of the scale is about right, maybe too much.

Seeing as Cats are big with Apple at the moment I suggest looking at lions, not the ones in the zoo, those on the plains of Africa. They are the kings of their environment as man is in his. Lions are skinny buggers.

And for those with cancer concerns may I suggest researching Hoxsey, a very interesting story, takes a while to dig it all up.

There's a lot of pressure on Steve at the moment, all those deals with telecoms companies for one, and does anyone like telecoms companies?

For Steve I wish, prosper and long live.

Everybody lies!

Jun 10, 08 - 11:43 am Comment from: thinnovation

Steve Jobs is taking the thinnovation idea personnally (jokes).

Jun 10, 08 - 11:49 am Comment from: mugwump

Folks, it's most likely that it he carries quite a load for the company during this iPhone 3G rollout, and we all benefit. It's a combination of great pressure and fantastic possibilities he sees about all of this innovation.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:49 am Comment from: Randolph Kirkpatrick

Steve,

Hope you are well. Please absorb some major amounts of calories. Lots of shakes, intravenous drip....?

And get a subtle version of one of those Jean Luc Picard muscle suits to go under your black turtle neck.

Seriously hope (not pray, as I'm an atheist) that he's got plenty of years at the helm, and yet while he's at it, start outlining the succession strategy so one day soon-ish he can step back to being Chairman Steve and leave the day-to-day to Scott, Phil, Cook, and others.

Best of luck, Steve.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:51 am Comment from: Gandalf

Addendum

I first saw this story on 'The Street' who's motivations should be crystal clear. Any kind of FUD to throw at Apple, there will be more 'concerns' expressed by opposing vested interests who already have vested interest in most media.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:51 am Comment from: Twenty Benson

Steeeeve, man!... is your wife putting you up to this??? If so, man, she's a crank... get yourself off that freaky vegan rubbish A.S.A.P!! - get down to McDonald's and get a few BigMac triple bacon cheese burgers down you now!

What is this - SteveJobsAir? Steve, we know you like it T-H-I-N, but you'll be cutting wedding cakes next. It don't suit you... NO, you don't you look 'super-sleek' and modern... just 20 years older than you should. Listen to your loyal fans... if 'her indoors' is putting you up to this... she's gotta go man!!

Fill Out.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:55 am Comment from: KenC

One the Blodgett story is IRRESPONSIBLE! It's a way for him and his short buddies to drive down Apple's share price.

Second, while Steve is decidedly thin, he did not look "frail".

Third, if he had a pancreatic recurrence, he would already be gone. Recurrence is far more deadly and fast-acting than the original cancer.

Fourth, the only known way to increase life expectancy is to go on a restricted-calorie diet. Just look up any number of stories in the NYTs, or anything on resveratrol.

Fifth, did any of you watch PBS' Frontier House series? Steve's weight and appearance is the norm for your average frontier male 150 years ago, when people worked outdoors, and they were robust.

The bottom line is that the sky is falling type of people like Blodgett are just trying to drive down Apple's stock.

Jun 10, 08 - 11:56 am Comment from: Bandit Bill

I hope he's got AppleCare.

Just kidding... no disrespect intended. He does look quite thin though. It looks like he should be eating more and working out.

I am vegan and I meet up with a group of vegans/vegetarians once per month. Most of us look very heathy. I might add that there are quite a few people I meet with that could stand to lose weight.

If you consume more calories than you burn then it is stored as fat (period). It doesn't matter the source of the calorie.

Mabee CEOs of Publicly traded companies should be treated like the President of the US, and have a Physical every year that is disclosed to the public.

In any case Steve if you are reading this (as if), hope you are as healthy as an OX.

Jun 10, 08 - 12:13 pm Comment from: Lance G.

And we're just now talking about this? I thought he looked alarmingly thin at the last keynote presentation in March, but no one made a comment back then. I was surprised that this obsertvation hasn't been made before now. This is not new. He was thin in March as well.

Jun 10, 08 - 12:21 pm Comment from: Yours Smugly

I thought he looked thinner than ever this time around. He's also shaven clean, which makes him look a little different than 'usual'.

If each person here sends Steve a pint of ice cream we'll fatten him up in no time. ; )

Anybody know what his favorite flavor is? : )
I bet he's either a Ben & Jerry's "Cherry Garcia" kinda guy or perhaps a fan of Coffee/Espresso based ice cream—you know, for those late nights thinking up something completely different.

Jun 10, 08 - 01:04 pm Comment from: Ampar

" . . . for those late nights thinking up something completely different."

I thought that was Monty Python.

Jun 10, 08 - 01:17 pm Comment from: Ken

SInce chemo generally tends to make hair fall out I think it's safe to say he isn't undergoing chemo. Since the surgery was considered successful I would also consider it safe to believe that's not a problem now.

Basically I think he is just watching his food intake - I wish I could do the same and get a bit closer to his size!

Jun 10, 08 - 01:18 pm Comment from: The Dude

Red meat is not bad for you, green fuzzy meat is.

Ron White said it best... "I didn't climb to the top of the fuckin' food chain to eat carrots."

Start eating real food Steve... please.

The Dude abides

Jun 10, 08 - 01:29 pm Comment from: Gandalf

Vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian is rather a side issue. Quality is more important. Why not try the paleolithic diet (look it up - and beware the FUD which of course Mac users should be well practiced in doing anyways).

It is funny how many people complain/comment about the issues carrying around laptops that weight a pound or two more, add that much to the body weight and there's no comment.

Don't fret, eat more food then go get some exercise to get rid of it. Hell there's a good profit in selling food AND in selling exercise machines, space, trainers etc. Come on people, be good consumers. Oh and buy some anti-indigestion tablets, pay for a heart by-pass, keep the shareholders happy.

Jun 10, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: skeeter

1. He doesn't eat like shit.
2. Dude probably did the Master Cleanse.
3. He's probably in 500x better shape than most of us here.
4. He needs to wear clothes that fit.

After realizing how my totally thoughtless, shitty diet had a direct correlation to my mental state, I changed my diet, and lost some weight - what little I had to lose - in the process. I was amazed - not to mentioned irritated - when everyone pointed out how perilously thin I looked and asked me if I was okay and on and on and on... meanwhile, I had never felt better!

It may be anorexia. Probably linked to the nerves of running the whole great big Apple shop. Their shares are dodgy. They so really are. Then there's the lack of a decent camera on the iPhone. Etc. I love Apple, but I feel sorry for anyone in there! It's got so much pressure on it.

Also, I know loads of people who are that thin and perfectly healthy.

Jun 10, 08 - 02:56 pm Comment from: bob

I really hope his cancer didn't come back. It could be the combo of his diet and the whipple procedure he had. They basically replumb the digestive tract, he probably lost some intestine... My mom had the incurable kind, same procedure. She only made it 8 months.

Jun 10, 08 - 03:35 pm Comment from: Afib

All our bodies are dying - some at rates faster than others.

Jun 10, 08 - 03:48 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

Steve Jobs has always seemed thin, since he was young, from photo's I've seen. He seemed to put some weight on in the late 1990's-early 2000's. Maybe be decided to change his diet, especially since his Cancer, in 2003.

Just from the fact he was on stage, shows he isn't gravely ill. He may be thin, but he seems strong blank stare

Jun 10, 08 - 05:51 pm Comment from: alansky

know that this is hard for us Apple fanatics to accept, but Steve's health is his own concern and not ours. He doesn't have to disclose anything to anyone at any time, period. —Gone Nuts

I totally agree! Nobody's damn business. Screw the shareholders. Apple's success has made them rich. It does not give shareholders the right to pry into the private life of the man who makes it all possible.

Jun 10, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: The Dude

@ "@ The Dude"

When you get off the rag, read it as a joke. Notice that it is quoted from comedian Ron White (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_White). Humor, meant to be funny.

I do find it funny that you call me a moron when you cannot even detect blatant humor. Pot, meet kettle. I suppose I have given you a few rocks to throw in your glass house too... so I guess it is time for you to get to work.

The Dude abides.

Jun 10, 08 - 08:44 pm Comment from: concerned

Skinny or not, this isn't the same happy, healthy Steve that released the first iMac a decade ago.

Steve's seat at Apple has to be spectacularly stressful, but he's aged half a lifetime in the last 10 years.

Yes, Apple, just an announcement confirming things either way...

Jun 10, 08 - 09:05 pm Comment from: second take

First, it is dangerous to say that a man's health - his personal business - is inextricably tied to his professional business. Is that a standard you want to set? Stock options or not, Steve Jobs does not owe any explanations of such things.

Woah, hold on here.

When a man is a company's CEO, spokesman, persona, product-driver, and the person whose moves are micro-watched by an entire INDUSTRY, I would say that person's ability to remain in his position would be considered rather important.

That said, I don't expect Steve's health file to be public. But it'd be nice to know, in general terms, the health of company officers & their ability to hold their positions. I.E. "CEO Smith's annual checkup revealed no significant or pertinent issues".

Nobody like surprises, and I'd hate to see the fallout of a key executive's emergency retirement, because his health was "none of our business".

Jun 10, 08 - 09:27 pm Comment from: julian

i agree with gow.

only in the US would thin be considered sick. when are you bozos gonna realize that a relatively few inches of fat around your waist increases your risk of cardiovascular disease?

it's could be stress, due to the high global expectations of a new iPhone. for your info, steve is no vegetarian. he's a PESCETARIAN (include fish in diet for health purposes).

Jun 13, 08 - 03:26 pm Comment from: Rick from Quantico

I agree with MacDailyNews. There are investors that are counting on Jobs and his vision. Without him... Apple wouldn't exist today... I encourage you to write them at .

Seriously... their stiff upper lip (no further comment) is affecting their bottom line and my bottom line (as an investor). Some more information would be really helpful to all involved. Just a medical update, or a statement by his personal physician.

The VP for PR wouldn't be liable if indeed he had a bug... (and if he also had a more major affliction which they chose not to disclose). Nothing happened as a result of the nondisclosure in 2003-4... Full disclosure obviously is not required.

Jun 14, 08 - 12:13 am Comment from: Ross Nicholson

Steve Jobs is a gift of God to the American economy. He's survived pancreatic cancer for 5 years! His family must love him very much.
It's not easy to digest food without most of one's pancreas, so let's off him only our fondest hopes and toast him to continue to live a long and happy life. Jobs is the Steven Spielberg of computers, let's cease speculating about his personal health.
