Orb streams live TV and more to Apple iPhone and iPod touch
Thursday, May 08, 2008 - 01:30 PM EDT

Orb Networks has enabled Apple iPhone and iPod touch (jailbroken) to play live TV, Internet TV, and webcams from your PC or Mac (via Boot Camp or virtualization) running Windows Vista, Windows XP (Home or Professional) with Service Pack 2, or Windows XP Media Center Edition (2004 or 2005).

Orb Networks has optimized media streaming so it works well over WiFi and even over AT&T, O2, and Vodafone networks.

Orb streams live TV and more to iPod touch, iPhone:

"Orb bears no responsibility for anything that may occur should you decide to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch to enjoy cool stuff on it. OrbLive for iPhone is beta software."

WOW! You have to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, install a beta program and, as a special bonus, use Windows to get this to work?

Does it also come with a free root canal without anesthesia?

So basically what this means is we'll be able to access our Apple TV media from anywhere. That would easy the capacity limits on the iPhone as well.

I'm waiting for Sling to come out with their Slingplayer for the iPhone. Then I'll be in heaven!

I'll care about this when and if there is an approved application from the App Store.

Ditto on Slingplayer. Looks cool.

Okay, I went to their website, and rather than having to install VMware or Parallels to use Orb, why not just get an EyeTV stick and use their internet streaming software for your iPhone or Touch.

I'm' still waiting for Sling. I just worry that since the iPhone uses H.264 and not WMV, that the Sling solution will require me buying a new Slingbox, as the current Slings all stream WMV. The newest Slingbox, due in Q3 will stream HD and uses H.264, and will cost $400.

Sling Media looks like they've got excellent Mac compatibility.

Their FAQ says iPhone "currently" not supported. I'll bet they're working on it.

Orb, or something just like it will make an appearance along with iPhone/Touch 2.0 so what's the hurry?
