Mac shipments to NYC Schools delayed over WiFi issue
Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 04:56 PM EDT

"Scheduled delivery of Apple computers to schools run by the New York City Department of Education have been temporarily suspended due to problems related to connecting to the DOE's wireless network infrastructure," Prince McLean reports for AppleInsider.

"Apple is scrambling to address the WiFi connectivity issue within its Leopard operating system. The fix appears set to be included in the bug fixes of the upcoming Mac OS X 10.5.3 release, as noted in the report Successive Mac OS X 10.5.3 builds continue," McLean reports.

"Until the software fix ships, all Macs on order with wireless features are being held at Dell's merge center in Austin, Texas. The DOE contracted with Dell Managed Services to handle all of the school system's tech related ordering, including the procurement of Apple desktops, laptops, and servers," McLean reports.

MacDailyNews Take: It's about time those poor bastages at Dell's merge center got to handle some quality personal computers.

How is this an Apple issue? It seems to be a problem on the NYC Dept. of Education's end.

Fargin' iceholes!!!

Apr 17, 08 - 05:10 pm Comment from: Cubert

And, shouldn't it be "Dell's Layoff Center"?

Apr 17, 08 - 05:11 pm Comment from: HMCIV

Exactly how many WiFi protocols are out there? I would have thunk that Apple would be able to handle them by now.

Apr 17, 08 - 05:18 pm Comment from: s

The facility must be the only Dell facilty still in black

Apr 17, 08 - 05:29 pm Comment from: Every MacUser

If the School's door locks were broken and they couldn't deliver the computers, would Apple be responsible to get a locksmith?

What a bunch of crap!

Apr 17, 08 - 05:29 pm Comment from: poo

@DOENYC

what?

Apr 17, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: JRA

Apple needs to send a tech their ASAP. It doesn't matter whose fault. Apple needs to demonstrate excellent customer service and turn this into a win.

Apr 17, 08 - 05:56 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

Better hurry up and some Macs in there, based on these grammatical issues it looks like the quality of education has been sliding.

Apr 17, 08 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

... and get some Macs in there... [See my point?]

Apr 17, 08 - 06:13 pm Comment from: Uncle Al

Anyone else think about the possibility of the Dell people messing with the Macs before they're delivered? Scary thought.

Apr 17, 08 - 06:20 pm Comment from: slcphoto

Wow. Loved the obscure Johnny Dangerously reference from MDN!! Not sure many 20-somethings would have a clue about that, the fargin' iceholes!

Firstly, Apple would not have "apologized" for the problem or be "scrambling" to "resolve" the problem if Apple was not culpable for the problem. I'm certain that NYC DOE first sought to solve the problem internally, before concluding that the problem was due to some incompatibility with Apple software.

Secondly, do you know what the problem is exactly, or are you simply talking out of your "icehole", fanboi?

Thirdly, I reckon that your current occupation is not customer relations.

hmm. I do see the irony of Dell employees delivering Apple goods. The wave of the future. Instead of seeling the company and giving dough back to shareholders, just become a distribution hub for Apple.

Apr 17, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: Tylor

I'm still using the kext file from 10.5.1. 10.5.2 totally screwed my wifi stability on my 1st gen MBP, but oddly enough it fixed wifi for my girlfriend on her 1st gen Macbook. Hopefully news like this puts more pressure on Apple to fix the issue.

Our elementary school is currently installing Macs for the first time and running into proxy server issues and wireless as well, especially with Safari.

Apr 17, 08 - 09:38 pm Comment from: It's About Time

If this is what it takes to get 10.5.3 out the door pronto, I say the more noise the better! smile

Apr 17, 08 - 09:40 pm Comment from: Vaughn

Every now and then Mac lovers should to take a reality pill! As great as Apple and the Macintosh is as a computing company or platform, it falters as a deity! Ever since Leopard my WiFi connection regularly goes into scanning mode. Its annoying to me as a home user, it would utterly unacceptable to me in any business that I would run. (Honestly, it is sufficiently annoying to me on a personal level to have caused me to hard wire as much as my home network as I possibly could!)

Apr 17, 08 - 10:17 pm Comment from: tt

You're doing it wrong.

Apr 17, 08 - 10:35 pm Comment from: Cubert

@Afib,
First, the "fargin' iceholes" comment was a take on MDN's take, which is from the movie "Johnny Dangerously".

Second, neither I, nor anyone else on this site, knows what the true issue is - we are all guessing, including me.

Third, I am somewhat in customer relations - and my patients tend to like me.

Fourth, you are an @$$hole!

Have a good night!

Maybe some educational institution could this way force Apple to fix also iMovie 08? I believe that iMovie is used in schools a lot and they could easily say that they won't buy any new computers before Apple makes iM08 to handle DV video properly.

Apr 18, 08 - 03:29 am Comment from: Moo

I also wonder what the problem is;

We service 2 ISD's, and between them there are nearly 1,000 NEW MacBooks up and online (and several thousand older Apple laptops).

And no, there isn't a problem with their Wi-Fi.

Apr 18, 08 - 09:19 am Comment from: JoshtheImacGuy

I have to laugh! All of you fan boys are such hypocrites! Had this been a problem with VISTA you would all be shouting with glee about how lousy MS products our. But, replace the the name VISTA with Leopard, and it's always somebody else's fault.

You folks have NO credibility. Anyone with 1/2 a brain will not value anything you say in the future.

Apr 18, 08 - 09:37 am Comment from: El Bandito

That's great news! Maybe one day soon I will be able to wake up my MBP and actually connect to a WAN.

Apr 18, 08 - 09:56 am Comment from: Moo

JoshtheImacGuy;

I repeat;

"I also wonder what the problem is;

We service 2 ISD's, and between them there are nearly 1,000 NEW MacBooks up and online (and several thousand older Apple laptops).

And no, there isn't a problem with their Wi-Fi."

In case you're too dense (or too much a fanboy), we have THOUSANDS Appla laptops up and running in two states.
There are a mic of iBooks, PowerBooks, MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

Off the top of my head, roughly EIGHT HUNDRED NEW MACBOOKS are out there, and they're online, using Wi-Fi, and no one has determined that there's an issue with them.

Anywayzzzz...
Rant on.

Apr 18, 08 - 08:29 pm Comment from: JoshtheImacGuy

Moo, you missed my point. The district may be the problem, not Apple's iMacs. Sure. But, my point is that the fan boys mindlessly make excuses for Apple, while under the SAME CONDITIONS they would blame MS without giving it a second thought.

Cubert:

'First, the "fargin' iceholes" comment was a take on MDN's take, which is from the movie "Johnny Dangerously".'

Yeah, so? Are you so unimaginative that you have to borrow your wit from the film industry?

”Second, neither I, nor anyone else on this site, knows what the true issue is - we are all guessing, including me.”

Well, apparently Apple and NYC DOE do know “what the true issue is” or issues are, and Apple is busy resolving the problem as reported in the article, Cubert.

”Third, I am somewhat in customer relations - and my patients tend to like me.
”

You must be a pathologist.

<b>”Fourth, you are an @$$hole!

Have a good night!”<b>

The only persons I know that resort to profanity to express themselves are idiots.
