Apple’s Macbook Air sales soar
Tuesday, March 04, 2008 - 08:42 AM EDT

"Looking for a MacBook Air? It seems the lightweight 'road warrior' laptop has been flying off the shelves at a rate that Apple cannot keep up with," Andrew Buck reports for Crain's New York Business.

"According to interviews with New York-area Apple stores, the company’s new Air has been sold out every day since its inaugural flight January 29. Although Apple has increased store orders, it cannot keep up with demand. Apple’s online store at Apple.com is quoting a five to seven business days before the hot product becomes available," Buck reports.

"New York isn’t the only city that is out of Air. Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boston have been having problems keeping up with demand," Buck reports.

Hey, that's pretty good news! Good enough to knock the share price down a few more dollars, I reckon.

The Apple Store at Chestnut Hills had three MBAs - disk versions - on display but not a single Time Capsule. The way they were being ogled - and eminently ogleable they are - by several young folk. Collage age ... "young" is relative. One was commenting that she'd just bought a MacBook. I mentioned that As A Computer, the MacBook is a better choice ... while the MBA wins as an Ultra-light. She did not seem consoled.

Mar 04, 08 - 10:43 am Comment from: Mac+

This doesn't mean MBA is a huge success. What I suspect is that the very low demand for MBA exceed its extremely low supply...

Mar 04, 08 - 10:53 am Comment from: wmd

It’s nice to have a product that is in demand, but this is not good news for Apple. They are now on the hot seat to deliver and they must deliver fast! Look at the Wii, over a year later they still cannot meet the demands. This puts Nintendo as a company in a poor light with consumers.

Its one thing to have a great idea its another thing to meet the demands. One thing good about Apple, they have learned this lesson in the past and they are good at making adjustments. I hope they can do this with the Air.

Mar 04, 08 - 11:05 am Comment from: Predrag

It was very difficult for Apple to precisely gauge the initial demand for MBA. Judging by these forums, the device was obviously controversial, in that some praised it to high heavens, expecting them to fly off the shelves, while others claimed it will fail, as it is under-featured and under-powered. Apple might have had better expectations than many on these forums, but even they apparently underestimated the demand. I don't think this will hurt Apple in any meaningful way; an occasional shortage is a good thing to have; it's not like Apple's expected delivery time-frame is 6-8 weeks.

Mar 04, 08 - 11:09 am Comment from: Mister Snitch

Well, Chicago hasn't had Air since His Airness retired. Ironically, though, the town remains windy.

Mar 04, 08 - 11:19 am Comment from: ElderNorm

@ WMD,
You said, "It’s nice to have a product that is in demand, but this is not good news for Apple. They are now on the hot seat to deliver and they must deliver fast! Look at the Wii, "

So, if you have stock on the shelf, demand is low and the company is going broke cause no one is buying.

If you have no stock cause people are buying so fast, its terrible and the company is going broke due to lost sales.

Right? grin

Mar 04, 08 - 11:19 am Comment from: Spark

I'd like to think that Apple has a hit in the MB Air, but it is false logic to see shortages and conclude it is due to high sales. For all we know, there were only 1000 produced in the first run.

Mar 04, 08 - 11:44 am Comment from: Macromancer

@ ElderNorm

You just gotta realize that to some people nothing Apple does is ever perfect or right on or even good. People read the tea leaves however they want to support their own baseless theories.

Mar 04, 08 - 11:46 am Comment from: saint

ElderNorm: If people want an ultralight, and the Air isn't on the shelves, they'll go somewhere else and buy a different one. It's not like being late with an SDK, since people have already bought the hardware. That's why it's important that Apple address this immediately.

Mar 04, 08 - 11:48 am Comment from: Rich Apple person

Once again MacDaily News get it's nose stuck in Apples crack. The reason the sales are "soaring" is because Apple did not order that many to begin with and in fact cut back in orders from the factory. Please do your research before you post garbage propaganda

Mar 04, 08 - 11:53 am Comment from: Ampar

It's also possible that there are constraints on some of the components necessary to manufacture the MBA. There are quite a few custom items.

Mar 04, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

I'm more inclined to believe...

...that Apple withholds inventory in order to create BUZZ

Functionally, the MacBook Air sucks to high heaven and back.

What? Can't play a DVD, or burn a cd/dvd?

Backing up is taking forever over slow USB?

Glossy screen hurts your eyes?

Sat on your fragile MBA and now it's not working?

Accidentially mailed your MBA in a manila envelope?

Mar 04, 08 - 12:27 pm Comment from: flappo

the macbook pro is so ahead of the air only airheads would buy one in the first place

no wonder women are the target demographic

dumbass chicks

they should make em in pretty colours with optional tampon holders

Mar 04, 08 - 12:31 pm Comment from: alansky

"Nobody wants the MacBook Air. It's too expensive, too heavy, too limited, too everything bad in the universe."

Mar 04, 08 - 12:39 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

I got to see one first hand. My first impression was not how thin it was, but actually how small it is. The photography on Apples web site makes it seem larger then what it really is.

Mar 04, 08 - 12:47 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ flappo

I can barely hear you over your Queen records. How is the redecorating coming? Did you get your terrier groomed today? I hear Cats is coming to town.

Come on. Only 'friends of Dorothy' hate women that much.

@flappo
Did you Mama hit you when you where little?

Mar 04, 08 - 12:53 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Mac-nugget

No, she made him wear pretty dresses and called him 'precious'. When he grew up liking show tunes and men it made him bitter.

Mar 04, 08 - 12:58 pm Comment from: madmatt

Nobody is forced to buy the MB Air!

Neither MB or the MB Pro won't go away therefore.

So if some people like the MB Air, please let them decide that on their own. Not everyone with a different usage profile or opimion is stupid.

So please stop missusing this site to demonstrate your "my opinion is the only one that counts" stupidness.

Or in others words:
It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Mar 04, 08 - 01:04 pm Comment from: Ampar

"they should make em in pretty colours with optional tampon holders"

Why optional? You could always use it as a holder for fresh ass corks.

Mar 04, 08 - 01:17 pm Comment from: MacBill

Just because they're selling out of the MacBook Air doesn't mean that it's a hot product. They probably made SIGNIFICANTLY LESS MacBook Airs than any other MacBooks, so selling out of a few of them at each store isn't such a big feat. In my field discussions with dozens of consumers & business owners, most people don't want the MacBook Air -- they much prefer purchasing the MacBook or the MacBook Pro.

Mar 04, 08 - 01:24 pm Comment from: justified

@ChrissyOne,

Seriously? Because a "friend of Dorothy" would ever refer to women as "chicks?"

You know as well as I, misogyny is for straight men.

I know, I'm just fishing. wink

Mar 04, 08 - 01:37 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

But for the record, I've know some woman-hatin'-homos in my day.

Mar 04, 08 - 01:48 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

@ChrissyOne

"... I've know some woman-hatin'-homos in my day...."

A M E N. In fact the venom spouted towards women by gay men has often shocked me. There is a difference though. Straight men dislike what they can't have and cannot ever possibly understand. Gay men viciously hate what they can never be.

Mar 04, 08 - 01:58 pm Comment from: marcos

Went in to buy Air and got gas.

Mar 04, 08 - 02:03 pm Comment from: justified

@ChrissyOne,
It's those woman-hatin'-women that you gotta look out for.

@theloniousMac,
Gee, that's funny. The venom spouted towards women by straight men has helped me to understand why the divorce rate in America stands at roughly 50%. Likely because straight men viciously hate anyone they can't control.

So, by your logic, gay men viciously hate sea turtles AND hummingbirds?

Mar 04, 08 - 02:15 pm Comment from: krquet

I know that local Fry's Electronics are all out of MBA, even the display units were sold.
MDN Magic Word is 'half' as in the number Apple probably predicted for demand.

Mar 04, 08 - 02:18 pm Comment from: Ampar

Anyone can dislike those smarmy Chelonioidea AND those smartass, little Trochilidae.
All that flapping and attitude. WTF?

Mar 04, 08 - 02:19 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ justified

True 'dat. I've got my eye on you, Coulter.

@ theloniousMac

Gay men don't want to be women, dumbass. Watch some gay pron to learn more.

Mar 04, 08 - 03:02 pm Comment from: ken1w

It seems appropriate to describe Air sales as "flying off the shelves."

Mar 04, 08 - 03:41 pm Comment from: jake

flappo doesn't need a MBA, he stores his tampon supply safely up his ass.

Mar 04, 08 - 04:08 pm Comment from: Ampar

"It seems appropriate to describe Air sales as 'flying off the shelves.'"

It says it in every draft too.

Mar 04, 08 - 11:51 pm Comment from: Another Sale!!!

Hey guess who bought one of those MBA'a? Liberals get ready to screech... KARL ROVE! He was on Foxnews and everyone was jealous of his laptop, they said so themselves.

Mar 07, 08 - 09:58 am Comment from: Banana

Its fantastic! Firstly I didnt want to buy it, but when I looked through this site (http://www.maconair.com), I had changed my point of view and bought it! Rly enjoyed this model
