Wall Street Journal poll: What’s on your electronics gift list? (includes Zune, omits iPod?!)
Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 03:58 PM EDT

"Consumer electronics appear to be a bright spot in what is expected to be an otherwise tepid holiday shopping season," The Wall Street Journal reports.

WSJ is conducting a poll where readers can vote on their most-likely gadget gift.

The choices offered - along with their current totals (%, votes) - are:
• Flat Panel TV - 5% (69 votes)
• iPhone - 51% (647)
• Compact Camera - 5% (69)
• SLR Camera - 6% (78)
• BlackBerry - 10% (131)
• Zune - 8% (101)
• DS Lite - 5% (66)
• GPS Navigator - 10% (126)

MacDailyNews Take: Zune, but no iPod? Look up "conspicuously, blatantly, and screamingly absent" and you get this WSJ poll. Something smells really fishy.

Is The Wall Street Journal (or an advertiser, perhaps) looking for skewed poll results?

Well, alrighty then.

To us, iPhone's vote total looks a little light. You know what to do.

Vote in the WSJ poll here.

UPDATE: 4:37pm EST: Well, that didn't take long. WSJ has amended their poll choice (but, not their results list, yet) from "iPhone" to "iPhone or iPod" lumping the two products together. Should we tell WSJ that altering the choices midstream, of course, also instantly makes the results of their rigged poll even more worthless? We guess we just did. You still know what to do.

For those celebrating the holiday, Happy Thanksgiving and, as always, thanks for visiting MacDailyNews and iPodDailyNews!

What? No one buys presents for people they hate anymore? What's the world coming to? The Zune is the perfect gift.

Nov 21, 07 - 09:21 pm Comment from: Grifterus

WOW!! Zune Tang is registered member!!

Nov 21, 07 - 09:22 pm Comment from: Occasional Poster

Zune is now down to "0" percent! Hahaha!

Nov 21, 07 - 09:45 pm Comment from: GizmoDan

71%

The question offers 'iPhone or iPod' as a choice, but the result graph only shows 'iPhone'. They are still trying to discriminate against Apple.

Nov 21, 07 - 09:49 pm Comment from: Steve Ballmer

iPod not omitted!

iPod just wasn't as popular as the Zune!
Plain and simple!

when asked, "OTHER than an iPod what else is on your wish list?"

Nov 21, 07 - 10:51 pm Comment from: Rupert

Was not WSJ sold to Faux News Corp?

Mmmm, more fair and balanced stories.

'Higher' expectations?
What do you expect?

Nov 21, 07 - 11:19 pm Comment from: Brilliant Sandwich

There should be a choice for iPod nano. At $149 and plays videos, it will be the big seller this Christmas... not the iPhone.

Nov 22, 07 - 12:40 am Comment from: wings

What a weird list in the first place.
I mean, Flat Panel TV is pretty darn generic.
And then to specifically state Zune and DS?
Why not portable AV player (e.g., iPod or Zune) and portable gaming device (DS or PSP).
Thars a fox in tha hen haus!

secret word - "straight" as in give it to me straight, will ya?

Nov 22, 07 - 12:55 am Comment from: macgravy

yu'al know that the wsj is a has been rag when you compare it to ibd....wsj is for old and bought off people....don't mean to offend anyone, bu that is the case....

maybe the new owner wil be able to turn it around...even at 90+ years of age....(the new owner that is...)

hope yual know who this is???

Nov 22, 07 - 03:33 am Comment from: Mel Gross

I doubt if the WSJ is biasing their poll. They may have listed it poorly, but it's not likely they are biased. Just read their articles about Apple and you will see that. Also read their articles about the Zune, and you will see it there as well.

It's plain stupid for MDN to even think that.

Nov 22, 07 - 04:41 am Comment from: British Mac Head

Seems the zune has a few votes. I'm guessing Monkey boy has sent a memo around all of the MS campus. "Vote for the zune on this pole. We're looking bad here guys!!!" Then a few more broken chairs lol!!!

Nov 22, 07 - 07:02 am Comment from: Wingsy

The iPhone/Pod has 344 TIMES as many votes as the Zune. (63247 vs 184). And this is from the WSJ, not some Mac addict web site.

I'm an electronics engineer, and I've got several products out in the marketplace. Some doing quite well and others not so well, so I can feel the pain the Zune engineers must be going through when they see this poll. It must be very, very depressing to see a large chunk of their recent efforts to be so totally rejected.

My sympathies.

Nov 22, 07 - 08:51 am Comment from: onionhead

Well here in Oz, it will probably be a choice we'll have to make next year dammit!

Nov 22, 07 - 10:48 am Comment from: Leibie

Yeah, but when you get to the results, it still says "iPhone" only. A little sloppy.

Nov 22, 07 - 12:39 pm Comment from: Zuno the Clown

Zune is down to 0%
iPhone, Bitch!

Nov 22, 07 - 12:49 pm Comment from: AmericanJoe

Bwahhaaaaaah! have you all seen the zune % now?!? Bwahhahahah. This is really funny. The truth will out.

Nov 22, 07 - 02:01 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

The poll results have been edited since yesterday MDN. iPhone/iPod results are back at 52 percent and the number of votes is lower than yesterday.

Nov 22, 07 - 02:50 pm Comment from: drarkside

hey everybody i just want to say that the ipod got old like 3 years ago, and the ms haterz to stop hatin cause the know the zune is waaaaaaaaaaaayyy better the the ipod , no question about it

Nov 22, 07 - 05:23 pm Comment from: alansky

In the latest results (1:18PM PST), with 124,697 votes counted, the Zune tallies just 453 votes, which gives it a whopping 0% in the ratings.

As for the utterly embarrassing omission of iPod from the list, followed by the equally embarrassing category change from "iPhone" to "iPhone/iPod," one reader correctly pointed out that this category made about as much sense as "Refrigerator/Beachball."

Nov 22, 07 - 06:45 pm Comment from: Gasser

So shoppers want "not only the iPhone but also the latest BlackBerry models?" 64k votes for iPhone and a whopping 2k votes for blackberry? I just love it when the public speaks out counter to and despite the biases in the traditional media.

And a cumulative 0% for Zune? They could have generated more interest if one of the choices was "Birdbath Heaters."

Nov 22, 07 - 07:22 pm Comment from: Chris

Maybe they didnt have it on because, I dont know, everyone already has one?!?!?!?!!??!?!?!

LOL If you are a fan of Apple's "Think Different" slogan, you would definitely buy a Zune because buying an iPod is Thinking the Same LOL

Nov 22, 07 - 09:48 pm Comment from: Amos

It now says Zune is up to 27%!!!!! Or some 44,000 fools are going to "buy it as a gift." I wonder who is working overtime stuffing the ballot box? My guess is that's the same people who got the Journal to list that lame POS in the first place. We had a saying in the 60's: You don't have to be paranoid to live in this country, but it helps. It is now so much more true.

Nov 22, 07 - 09:52 pm Comment from: tate

keep clicking the refresh on the poll... it increases for the Zune about 50 votes per second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nov 22, 07 - 09:54 pm Comment from: tate

that's not a person voting but maybe a person wrote the program...

Nov 23, 07 - 02:23 am Comment from: Zune Tang

After slamming the WSJ poll, I feel better now. I need a smoke.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Nov 23, 07 - 06:26 am Comment from: Bill

Hey, what's going on? As of yesterday the Zune had 0 (zero) percent votes. Today it has 27%?

So, suddenly, thousands of people want a Zune? I think not. Someone is stuffing the ballots.

Nov 23, 07 - 08:10 am Comment from: Amos

I misread the Zune numbers last night, but this morning nearly 200,000 people have said that they plan to give the Zune as a gift! Given that Zune has sold, what, a bit over a million units since it was introduced, and now 200,000 plan to give it as a gift within the next month! Lesson: never ever believe online polls.

Nov 23, 07 - 10:49 am Comment from: TechU

"Microsoft has once again caught lightning in a bottle. "

Nice concept- to bad when you open the bottle, you'll get burned.

Nov 24, 07 - 10:06 am Comment from: not fooled

From the article:

in a highly improbable move, Zune surged from less than 1% through most of the polling to 28% at the end.

Hmmm indeed.

MDN got out the vote. MS clearly STUFFED the vote.

Either way it makes no difference, the marketplace results will speak for itself.

Although keep an eye out for MS trying to skew even that. Look for MS strong-arming retailers (i.e. "you need to take 10 zunes for every Xbox"), or even MS secret shoppers buying their own product back.

The Murdoch influence already rearing its head, eh?

Nov 24, 07 - 02:18 pm Comment from: paperboy

The Murdoch influence already rearing its head, eh?

The WSJ started its slide when Robert Bartley, their legendary & long-time editorial page editor, passed away in 2003.

Today they're trying to be too "new media", trying to sex everything up. They need to re-establish themselves as a serious business paper; right now they're just another "USA Today", trying to be everything to everyone.

Cutting their notoriously high subscription rates, along with giving online access to paper subscribers (currently it's extra, WTF?), wouldn't hurt either.

Nov 24, 07 - 09:33 pm Comment from: Crash

You foks are really paranoid. Look at your own post here and note a member here disclosed about auto voting and then the vote for the Iphone/Ipod shot up to 64000. Hmmm supicious huh, then it held there until the Zune showed strength late, the vote went through the roof. S of cheating. Why dont you look in your own camp first.
Apple are good products, they can only get better, and maybe appeal to the mass market, you guys will have to accept the fact though that others have great products too,

Nov 24, 07 - 10:22 pm Comment from: @crash

The iPhone/iPod was comfortably leading even before MDN did their get-out-the-vote gambit. The zune was comfortably near or at the bottom until some mysterious last-minute surge pushed it up to 28%.

You tell us what's suspicious.

Apple are good products, they can only get better, and maybe appeal to the mass market

Analyst expects Apple to sell record 25 million iPods in holiday quarter
http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/15588/

Yes, things will only get better.

Nov 24, 07 - 11:21 pm Comment from: Crash

You failed to note that the initial surge from Iphone/Ipod category was after your member named Ampar posted this [quote\ Comment from: Ampar
No Xbox? Oh well!

"Hey, you can vote as often as you want -- they don't check your cookies!"

Then I guess it's time for an AppleScript routine to vote repeatedly and automatically.

P.S. Nice work, Chris!

\

Now Im sure you can see the connection here about the paranoid comment I made earlier. Futher into this, The vote remained static for many hours for the Iphone category at 64400 until the Zune showed real strength in voting and then like a switch the votes for the Iphone/Ipod shot throught the roof, stopping at the 456000 it finally ended at. At times there was a 200 vote increase in a matter of a screen refresh. Really weird dont you think.
Now like I said Apple products are good, they will get better, in time. They may even appeal to the mass market. We will ait and see.
And as the wise man once said, "It doesnt matter that you are better, the people dont care"
Crash

Nov 25, 07 - 09:20 am Comment from: Crash

What no response! Guess what I found is true then. Man you folks really need to open up and embrace what is real, being so closed to fresh thinking will be your undoing.
