RUMOR: Apple to partner with Nintendo on iPhone games
Tuesday, June 19, 2007 - 09:42 AM EDT

"With the iPhone days away from being launched Nintendo has apparently begun working with Apple, licensing a limited amount of content for the new phone," Noheat.com reports.

Noheat reports, "These exclusive games will be released on the iTunes Store at a $29.00 price point a few months after the iPhone launches. No word on whether Nintendo will be distributing iPod versions of these games."

"Asked anonymously whether or not these games would cut into Nintendo DS sales, we heard a resounding no. The logic is that because the licensed games will be exclusive and cater to an older audience they should not intrude into Nintendo’s existing markets," Noheat reports.

Wii-like games utilizing iPhone's accelerometers FTW!

Jun 19, 07 - 09:47 am Comment from: nOwAY

$29 - you've got to be kidding!

Jun 19, 07 - 09:48 am Comment from: Petey

Excellent news!

And so the iPhone gets bigger and bigger!

Jun 19, 07 - 09:52 am Comment from: Jeff

Yeah, Super Mario and Duck Hunt?

Jun 19, 07 - 09:58 am Comment from: Matt

I don't think this will really happen. If it does happen it would be awesome and I will be the first person to buy some games.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:00 am Comment from: Thorin

@ Jeff,

Duck Hunt was awesome, don't be hatin' LOL

Jun 19, 07 - 10:06 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

There's a new office chair demolition game for the iPhone designed to satisfy the relentless requests of an anonymous fanatic only known by the e-mail address of .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

"$29 - you've got to be kidding!"

Why? Aren't DS and PSP games in that same price range??

Jun 19, 07 - 10:08 am Comment from: OpJ

$29.99 is the normal price point for Nintendo DS games.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:21 am Comment from: No Squirt For You

"$29 - you've got to be kidding!"

Yes, they are kidding. The games are actually free. Nintendo and Apple have both filed for non-profit status. They are also adopting a pure socialist philosophy that eschews capitalism and all private ownership. Relocation scouts were spotted in Havana this morning.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:23 am Comment from: Holy Mackerel

nOwAY:

I agree - that is so cheap!

I hope they also port some inexpensive games to the aTV too, and add a USB controller.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:29 am Comment from: mario

I love the idea of retro nintendo games on the iphone but for $10 - no way would i be paying $30 for this. I'd pay full price for new titles or even more for the ability for Halo or WoW, but SuperMario, Duck Hunt? not gonna happen

Jun 19, 07 - 10:29 am Comment from: s

Why would Nitendo care if the games cuts into Nintendo DS sales? They are not making money on the hardware, are they?

Jun 19, 07 - 10:32 am Comment from: PC Apologist

There are two words that would nudge me toward buying an iPhone:

Donkey. Kong.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:33 am Comment from: theloniousMac

I'd rather have iChat than some stupid ancient Nintindo game.
I'd rather have GPS.
I'd rather have the ability to access the phone's OS and develop my own applications...

and the list grows...

Jun 19, 07 - 10:35 am Comment from: KreationX

@mario
who said the games will be Supermario or Duck Hunt?

they will most likely be new games, designed just for the iphone,
much like Wario Ware Touch for the DS, or the Micro Games built into some DS games.

if true, this will be very cool.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:36 am Comment from: G-Man in B'ham

Gee, if these games come out soon, you'll be able to buy better games for the iPhone than for the Mac.

Just kidding. But seriously, if they're really going to be $29, then they will be worth it. Apple didn't stand up to the music companies on price just to fold to the gaming companies.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:47 am Comment from: frogstik

something like brain age would rock on the iPhone... i am sure that's the kind of stuff we'll see... i really doubt mario and the gang will be on the iPhone anytime soon.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:54 am Comment from: M.A.D.

In noway's defense, I think he means $29 is too much for older games. Seems the article is hinting the games will be the old nostalgic ones that the older audience remembers.

So $29 for older games the Wii downloads for $5-$10 is a bit high.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:56 am Comment from: Rudge

Great rumor. I didn't know that Nintendo was developing web apps. :-D Oops! Sore subject; sorry.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:57 am Comment from: Thorin

@ TMF,

I heard of another title coming as well:

"Juggle the Blackberries"

Obsolesence is not as close as we thought.

Jun 19, 07 - 10:59 am Comment from: Shoeman

Yeah this is HUGE!

Employees are going to demand this phone and IT people are stupid...

Can't IT people see what an addition this thing will be for Corporate users; Music, The Office, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Duck Hunt... Man, I can see CEO's buying this thing by the truckload... So what if it can't open office attachments nor sync with corporate servers for secure enterprise email - We're all going to play Super Mario Brothers all day!!!!!

As I mentioned, a Great Consumer machine.. A Corporate non starter...

Jun 19, 07 - 11:07 am Comment from: Irish Dude

Tbh, if they were going to release some of the old classic Nintendo games on iPhone it would definately help me buy it. Good move apple

Jun 19, 07 - 11:23 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

"Juggle the Blackberries"

Shame on you. I believe the correct term is African American Berries.

Read the article!

It says "Asked anonymously whether or not these games would cut into Nintendo DS sales, we heard a resounding no. The logic is that because the licensed games will be exclusive and cater to an older audience they should not intrude into Nintendo’s existing markets,"

NOTICE THE WORD 'EXCLUSIVE' - in this context it means original NEW games NOT retro games!

Jun 19, 07 - 12:16 pm Comment from: Maddog

Oh god...more Nintendo rehashes and remakes. As if the Virtual Console wasn't enough already.

MDN Magic Word: Why

Jun 19, 07 - 12:20 pm Comment from: Cubert

I would pay $29 if they package all their old games into one great big bundle.

Jun 19, 07 - 12:27 pm Comment from: [doc square]

This is Nintendo we're speaking of... if indeed it is true... which is hard to say considering Nintendo's past, then the games will be new, and use the capabilities of the iPhone. Old games, if they were offered, WOULD be $10 or so.

Jun 19, 07 - 12:44 pm Comment from: Loru

Apple TV would be a great market for classic downloads like on the Wii's Virtual Console, they could just make a WiFi controller

Jun 19, 07 - 12:53 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Didn't it say games targeting an older audience, NOT older games. Probably puzzle games, pinball, golf, bowling, etc.?

Games using the motion sensor could be very cool! There are some motion sensor games for PowerBooks and MacBooks that are fun.

Whatever it is, it's good news and at $30, not a bad deal.

Jun 19, 07 - 01:11 pm Comment from: Basty

What part of "exclusive" don't you guys understand. They are not retro nintendo games. They will be all new.

But $29 does seem pretty steep. DS and PSP have an interface made for games, and they can have much better games. That's why they're expensive. I'm guessing these will be closer to iPod games, which are 5 bucks.

Jun 19, 07 - 01:20 pm Comment from: ha!

basty, this is MDN they are worse than slashdot for actually reading.

Jun 19, 07 - 01:36 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

ha!: "worse than slashdot for actually reading"

Then why are you here?

Jun 19, 07 - 01:47 pm Comment from: lbuschjr

Don't forget, the iPhone has a processor that can run OS X, and very quickly by the previews we have seen. So it makes sense that the games available for the iPhone could be more robust and advanced than the games for iPod. In addition, you have OS X core technologies, like animation, which can be tapped into by Nintendo or other game developers.

"contribute a pompous sounding comment with everyone else"

That's fair. Thanks for the honest reply.

Jun 19, 07 - 02:29 pm Comment from: FUDsucker Proxy

Wow, the putrid stream of FUD is intense! Every new announcement brings more and more negative responses! Have you every heard as much negativity before? The iPhone has them all Zuning their underpants!

Jun 19, 07 - 02:49 pm Comment from: ha!

that aside, i suspect these will be brain age and nintendogs type games, not metroid. the goal would be to bring nintendo's 'non gamer' games to the phone. they want the gamers to get ds's. well, i mean, if they don't have one already. which you should, they are great.

bias notice: nintendo fanboy. (tho my DS has an apple sticker on it)

Jun 19, 07 - 04:43 pm Comment from: Toby Belch

lbuschjr,

yes, but these games will almost certainly be available for the NEW touch-screen iPod, which will probably be coming out in the autumn of this - for Apple - very happy year!

"MDN WILL BE FOLLOWING THIS STORY FOR OBVIOUS REASONS"

at least this nintendo news involves apple.

Jun 19, 07 - 06:34 pm Comment from: Crabapple

Nintendo & Apple create a new revenue stream, Apple allow the Wii access to AppleTv....

Imagine how quickly Nintendo's coffers will fill up when the Wii is avaiable for use on AppleTv?

Sony & M$ have serious reason to start turning in their virtual graves!!

Except of course Sony's saving grace is Blu-ray which Apple is supporting to the hilt.

What is the Balmy one's saving grace?

CHAIRS....more CHAIRS!!!!!

Musical Chairs, now available on Zune.

Record company executives race round chairs thrown in place by the Balmy one. When the Zune stops (which it does if you don't subscribe!) the record company executive without a chair gets kicked out of PlaysForSure!:-)

Jun 19, 07 - 06:36 pm Comment from: Crabapple

Balmy one, I await royalty & licencing fees!!

Jun 20, 07 - 05:55 am Comment from: The Truth

"Yes, they are kidding. The games are actually free. Nintendo and Apple have both filed for non-profit status. They are also adopting a pure socialist philosophy that eschews capitalism and all private ownership. Relocation scouts were spotted in Havana this morning."

That is awesome!

Oooh, hold up...the games are free, but now I can't own the phone. Damn, I wanted one of them new phones.

although, I'm all for doin' away with that capitalism thing. that'll save me a lot of time, not having to use the shift key anymore.

Feb 15, 08 - 11:30 pm Comment from: David Murphey

I think this is a step forward to Apple iPhone really being the king. As soon as major developers start producing software titles specifically for the iPhone, it will uphold all market dominance.

Apr 27, 08 - 07:18 pm Comment from: John

Great news for those who can afford an iPhone
