Who the fsck cares? Does anyone really use Netscape anymore?

Jun 05, 07 - 11:45 pm Comment from: Qka

Camino 1.5 was just released today. A light, fast browser without all this social disease stuff.

Jun 05, 07 - 11:45 pm Comment from: Ed

God that brings back memories.

Whatever happened with that company? Did Aol destroy them?

My earliest memories of the internet a filled with netscape. With the internet boom, its a amazing how fast this Co. vanished.

Jun 05, 07 - 11:46 pm Comment from: Veronica

It isnt much beta than Safari if any.

Jun 05, 07 - 11:48 pm Comment from: MadMac

I am feeling nostalgic tonight. I care about Netscape because it's one of my first browsers (aside from Mosaic).

Perhaps I'm just feeling this way because I just had a conversation with my wife and gave her permission to have s e x with another guy. I'm feeling pretty wired right now. Hope it works out/ Kinda like, if you love them, set them free.

Jun 05, 07 - 11:57 pm Comment from: bill

Quite a confessional for the MacDailyNews crowd, dontcha think?

Jun 06, 07 - 12:03 am Comment from: anaknipedro

MadMac,

Please tell me your joking. That is messed up.

Jun 06, 07 - 12:09 am Comment from: mike

Madmac.. I suggest you cut loose from this website for a few months...

Jun 06, 07 - 12:12 am Comment from: LordRobin

Wow. The last time I used Netscape was in 2001, just before I ditched my Windows machine and switched to Mac. It was already a bloated piece of crap back then...

Jun 06, 07 - 12:13 am Comment from: MadMac

love you guys. I'll see you on the other side.

MW = "care", how do they do that???

Jun 06, 07 - 12:22 am Comment from: BuriedCaesar

Still trying to think of a clever [lame] way to tie this in to some obscure [and likely very poor] joke about that car company selling their brand name SUV to some software engineers and being perplexed why no one wants to drive it anymore...

Oh, well, it's late.

MadMac - gotta agree - that was way beyond messed up. Run, don't walk, and get some help. Please.

Jun 06, 07 - 12:27 am Comment from: Qka

@Ed

Netscape is now from Mozilla - the same folks that made FireFox and Camino, as well as a bunch of other software.

Three different browsers, three different architectures, three different design philosophies.
FireFox - universal, for Mac, Linux, Windows
Camino - mac only, and better for it
Netscape - still bloated after all these years

Take your pick.

Jun 06, 07 - 12:28 am Comment from: DogGone

How many mozilla variants do we need?

Madmac - yup that's messed up.

Jun 06, 07 - 12:29 am Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Interesting things today with the new Netscape beta and Marc Andreesen switching to Mac. You may hate Netscape, or you may not think that it matters, but Netscape was the next big thing before MS illegally used their monopoly status to crush Netscape. Navigator was a great browser before they bloated it out. It was far superior to IE. Unfortunately, as MS has done so often, they crushed a good company. It ended up as part of AOL, RIP...

My first internet browsing was using the text-based Lynx. My first web page was built in 1992, back when we built them using text editors with straight HTML, well before animations, plugins, Java, style sheets, etc. Netscape Navigator was a dream app back then - it amazed people! I had used Mosaic (also built mostly by Andreesen) and Netscape was far superior to that!

Ahh, those were the days! I may need to download the beta version just for nostalgic reasons!

Jun 06, 07 - 12:35 am Comment from: Frobots

Link Pad sounds very useful though

Jun 06, 07 - 12:54 am Comment from: the other guy

MadMac
You are Ok, you are over 40 ( mosaic gave you away) and sure enough to let her test the marriage I do hope there are no kids inlvolved, they don't take well to that. All the best

Jun 06, 07 - 01:18 am Comment from: AppleJack

I used the bundled Netscape, as a Newbie, on my first generation iMac (333hz.) I was advised to rid my machine of the addtionally bundled Explorer. It was explained that I should search out every last vestige of Explorer and trash it as soon as possible. I dutifully did so, and strangely enough my random freezes pretty much stopped.
Those were the days of dial-up and OS8.6. . . . After I got a digital camera, and saw what Photoshop could do, my machine had gracefully aged but was now severely obsolete.
About the time that Jaguar came along, I plunked down the money and got a Twin 1.25 G4 with a full gig of RAM. This was at an early Apple Store. The sales guy thought I was some kind of hero or something.
By the specs you can see that almost five years afterwards this remains as a formidable machine. Oh yeah, and I got a screen that remained the highest rated in the industry for nearly three years, the 23 inch Cinema Display.
Now, for the price I paid for the screen alone, I could get a Macbook and a 24 inch iMac. . . . But man, I've had a first-rate computer and screen for five years. . . . Wow!
But now I see an upgraded Leopard Mini in my future. I can use the G4 for backup, and I won't have to listen to the jet engines (fans) anymore.

Jun 06, 07 - 01:39 am Comment from: Darktanone

MadMac,

Hope you won't mind me voicing my opinion, but I wouldn't have taken the passive route. Sometimes a firm stance is enough to cause a change of heart. Maybe that's what she needed... I'm not pointing fingers; just hope my words will help.

Wish you all the best.

Jun 06, 07 - 02:02 am Comment from: Jack

msr...
I care. I'm the one person in the world who still uses Netscape. I mean it's just FireFox anyway, right? I feel honored the company went to all the trouble to upgrade my browser. What happened to version 8 I've been waiting for.

Jun 06, 07 - 02:05 am Comment from: hey now

i remember mosaic and i'm no where near 40, i'm 34, and i remember when it transitioned to netscape.

Jun 06, 07 - 02:20 am Comment from: Christian

Giving your wife permission to have s.e.x with another guy. What are you, stupid? Have you lost your balls COMPLETELY????

Spines aren't just for books.

Jun 06, 07 - 02:31 am Comment from: Hg Wells

I had not heard that Mozilla got Netscape. I thought AOL still had it and was continuing to destroy it. If I separate the bad stuff AOL injected into it, I still like it and use it on occasion. Maybe this new version will fix some of the things that needed fixing though.

Jun 06, 07 - 02:59 am Comment from: Lee

MadMac's relationship with his wife may in fact be healthier than most: many couples have affairs on the sly, whereas at least MadMac and his wife are being completely open with eachother about it. And many people have affairs because of the temptation of the 'forbidden fruit'; if you just let them go, they will often gain a new apprecviation for you (because of the freedom you give them) and come back to you. And if she doesn't come back, then it probably wasn't working out anyway.

Still, I'm sure this isn't what we came to a mac forum to read!

Jun 06, 07 - 03:54 am Comment from: antiChristian

MadMac doesn't own his wife nor does he own her will you dipstik, all spouses are free individuals. The fact that they discussed it at all and he might have said "I hope I'm here when you are done" shows a lot of self respect and balls, So what do you think that intimidating someone into staying leads to a healthy relationship...sssssshh dreamer.

Jun 06, 07 - 04:08 am Comment from: SydneyStephen

@Madmac
Well your news is certainly more interesting than a new release of Netscape. Wow. Marriage is not a "pick and choose" arrangement, however. Does your wife still expect the social prestige of being married; the joint financial support; the emotional support etc? And how does she propose to support you emotionally in your disarray and discomfort as she desports herself with the men of her choosing?

Yes, by all means set her free. Set her free right out the door.

And change the locks.

mw=former (as in wife)

Jun 06, 07 - 04:29 am Comment from: Camel Milk Drinker

@ MadMac, Invite this man over for an interview so that you know what she is getting into, the last thing you want is picking up some M$ virus that could require you to Ctrl+Alt+Delete your life.

Give him a cup of fresh warm Camels Milk, make sure he drinks it.

He will fart the Dallas theme tune causing your Mrs. to run for her wife!!!

Jun 06, 07 - 04:40 am Comment from: nukeman

@MadMac,
You've got BALLS! Hope it all works out for the best!

@Camel Milk Drinker
I suppose your advice is tried and tested? tongue laugh And where do the heck you get Camel's milk?

MW: nature, as in its human nature to be curious...

Jun 06, 07 - 04:53 am Comment from: Mark

@MadMac

You deserve to have your testicles removed. You are not a man!

By the way, can I cum all over your wife's face after making harcore anal sex with here?

I love when people talk about this like if it was a beautiful thing to let a couple play around with other people... that's not love, that's just sperm, sweaty balls, anal sex, breast stroking and such.

Geeee I can only imagine him kissing the wife goodnight and smelling her cum breath.

Jun 06, 07 - 05:57 am Comment from: Connor MacBook

My first experience of the graphical web (with Navigator) was like a blind person seeing for the first time. Previously I'd only had a text-based interface through uni.

MW: Never rub another "mans" rhubard.

Jun 06, 07 - 07:01 am Comment from: spinaltap

Navigator was the first browser I ever used, which is why I downloaded it for old times' sake. There is just one web site I need to access that isn't available to me on Safari, Camino, Firefox or Mac IE. I usually have to access it via VirtualPC.

However, the new version of Navigator opened this once inaccessible site without any problems. It is therefore a valuable browser for those minority sites that don't work for Macintosh.

Jun 06, 07 - 07:17 am Comment from: Cubert

She's all yours again, MadMac!

wink

Jun 06, 07 - 07:48 am Comment from: frisby

I downloaded it. It sucked. I ejected it. I always hated that damn browser.

@Qka
You left Opera off your list. It is worth mentioning anyway.

Jun 06, 07 - 07:56 am Comment from: Netscape Shmetscape

What's the point of it? Wax nostalgic all you want, but that was then and this is now.

Its main purpose probably is as a tax writeoff.

I won't bother downloading it to find out, but if it won't accept Mozilla's extensions, particularly one or the other variiations of Adblock, it would be no better than IE.

And if it does accept Firefox's extensions, why would I care, anyway? I'm going to waste my time duplicating my Firefox setup?

Consider the question rhetorical.

Jun 06, 07 - 08:02 am Comment from: PowerMac

Boy, this got off subject real quick.

I believe in a Christian based marriage. I love my wife, and my wife loves me. I am not here to cast stones. People make their own decisions, and must deal with it. So, good luck to you and your wife.

Jun 06, 07 - 08:07 am Comment from: Chris

@MadMac: Dude, I agree with SydneyStephen. Kick her right out for even asking such a thing. Marriage is marriage, remember those vows? You're either in or you're not. The horror is not somehow reduced by her asking. She clearly isn't committed, and you're clearly not okay with it, and pretending to be okay with it does not make you a man! Just my opinion, but grow a set before it's too late! I certainly hope you were just joking around!

Er, about the article though. Netscape is still around? I had no idea.

Jun 06, 07 - 08:29 am Comment from: British Mac Head

Hey MadMac, I bet if you said your wife has given you permission to have s e x with another woman these guys would come back with "Way to go MadMac!!" etc...

Jun 06, 07 - 08:51 am Comment from: Chris ][

British Mad Head: Nope. Not here.

Well................................

No.

Maybe.

No, gonna have to stick with no. Begrudgingly, but no all the same.

Jun 06, 07 - 09:00 am Comment from: razor

navigator did 'feel' like a mac application as opposed to IE. I used naviagator while studying graphic design back in 1996. gees has it been that long!!
cant remember what we had on campus but they could have been quadras. pretty damn slow, mind due they probably had very little ram in them by todays standards. them were the days of Quark Express, Illustrator, and Photoshop. thats all you needed to know back then. ahhhhh memories.

Jun 06, 07 - 09:28 am Comment from: Luc Scholte van Mast

Madmac, when my wife gets some drinks, she start asking me if I like another lady. I say yes and she says: see I know it and goes beserk. When I say no, she goes beserk as well saying: I know you like but you don't want to admit...
Now how to solve that?
Agree with most people here, unless you tell her she's allowed to do that, she should never ask for herself or leave the house and find what she likes.
MW: Three...lol, three-some troublesome...

Jun 06, 07 - 09:44 am Comment from: en

Hmmmmm, My Netscape Navigator went out with another browser one time and got a terrific virus.
After having to look at better browsers that worked better, I ended up leaving navigator and using FireFox, well, most of the time. But sometimes I run back and embrace my old browser, er . . . just for the fun of it. grin
I guess you could say that I am a multi-browser type of buy. I know my browser has other users and I am, . . . mostly . . . OK with that. But sometimes it wants to crash a lot and then I feel used!!!

I guess that is the price of having someone else's browser, even if its great when its new, they all get old and tired after a while. Just becareful of using IE. Its full of viruses. LOL

Taking a break in the action here, folks - it appears that the MadMac comments are just slightly ahead of those actually related to the topic at hand.

So, will it be a photo finish? Will those wishing to wax nostalgic for Netscape emerge victorious? Or will MadMac's completely off-the-wall and socially polarizing comment manage to totally and uttery hijack this thread?

Stay tuned to find out... wink
