EMI and The Beatles settle royalty dispute; deal could pave the way for Beatles to join 21st century
Thursday, April 12, 2007 - 09:28 AM EDT

Apple Store"The company representing The Beatles has settled a 30 million-pound ($59 million) royalty dispute with EMI Group, in a deal that could finally pave the way for the Liverpool band's music to go online," Kate Holton reports for Reuters.

"The announcement follows the settlement in February of another legal dispute -- a trademark disagreement between Apple Corps and computer and iPod company Apple Inc. which was also seen as key to putting the group's music online," Holton reports.

Holton reports, "The Beatles have been one of the last big acts to hold out from putting their music on the Internet."

"EMI's Chief Executive Eric Nicoli told reporters earlier this month he was working on a deal to put the band's music online but refused to give a time frame," Holton reports.

At the risk of being branded a heretic: Does anyone even care anymore??

I predict a high quality, limited time frame offer...60 days access to high rez Beatles files...but AFTER Leopard launches in June.

Apr 12, 07 - 09:38 am Comment from: Ninja252

Beatles make it to the 21st century? Perhaps, but kicking and fighting the entire way, who needs them..??

Apr 12, 07 - 09:42 am Comment from: Randian

I'm with you, Connor MacBook. The ship has already left the dock for the Beatles, and I don't pity them one little bit. Nine out of ten "youngsters" buying music today have never heard of them, and we sexagenarians have listened to their stuff 'way too much to care anymore.

RIP, Fab Four.

There is another delay. Apple Corps is suing the makers of any fruit drinks that have a green apple on their label.

Apr 12, 07 - 09:45 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

What The Beatles may actually expand their online presence from that one crappy 1960 album recorded with Tony Sheridan? Not that it helps me. I already have a complete Beatles collection.

I'll settle for seeing The Fab Faux live this weekend.

And for the person who's about the make the obligatory Zepplin comment, Zepplin can't go online until they figure out all of their proper writing credits.

AC/DC still needs to get there too. The amount of smokes Angus goes through he might need it.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:00 am Comment from: razor

btw i guarantee if John Lennon was still around he wouldve jumped on the itunes bandwagon ages ago. That guy had amazing vision and was light years ahead of the rest of the band. anyway thats all well known.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:00 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

@Connor MacBook: I already have a complete Beatles collection, so in that sense I don't care. However, The Beatles in a span of less than a decade did more to change music than any other group of musicians. The Beatles were the one of first self-contained band that both wrote and played their own songs. The Beatles ruled the pop charts during the 60s. The Beatles pioneered the multi-track recording techniques used by every musician today. The Beatles pioneered the incorporating music from around the world into rock-n-roll. What other author has a song book on the level of Lennon-McCartney? Rodgers-Hammerstein? Boyce-Hart? Holland-Dozier-Holland? John-Taupin? No. No. No. No.

I'm still trying to figure out what band in the last decade that could even have a fraction of the influence on the recording industry that The Beatles had during the 60s and during their subsequent solo careers.

As a Beatles fan I'm afraid I will have to agree with Connor MacBook. I'm bored of this whole charade, either sell them or don't.

Anyway, every Beatles fan on the planet has all their music anyway. Why would I suddenly rush out and buy all their albums again just because I can buy them from iTMS?

Apr 12, 07 - 10:05 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

@Truth: I was 18 when The Beatles first put their catalog on CD. That was a magical day. And I still haven't reached 40.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:07 am Comment from: d

The Beatles sell lots of CDs and I believe there is a strong correlation between the consumers of those discs and those who pay for legal downloads.

If you don't want to buy their music then don't. Why insult them? (their music, not their business decisions) Why assume nobody cares just because you don't?

BTW - My kids' 22ish y/old babysitter had never heard of the Rolling Stones but they still sell their old catalog and fill stadiums by playing their old hits.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:09 am Comment from: Midlothian

@Tommy Boy: I have to question the Beatles pioneering multi-track recording techniques observation. I'm pretty sure that Les Paul (and wife Mary Ford) broke most of that ground back in the 50's. At least that's what most recording engineers say in Nashville and Hollywood today.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:09 am Comment from: @ The Man With No Name

The Beatles in a span of less than a decade did more to change music than any other group of musicians. Blah blah blah blah. . . .

But what have they done for me lately?

Apr 12, 07 - 10:11 am Comment from: Damacles

Yeah, Randian, and Les Paul is still going strong in his 90's!

Apr 12, 07 - 10:13 am Comment from: ABBA

all i need is.. ABBA wink

Apr 12, 07 - 10:27 am Comment from: d

One more thing - The Beatles were the first band to consider a Pop/Rock album as something more than a collection of singles. (Sgt Pep)

This doesn't mean they'll sell anything now (though I think they will) but it does mean they deserve their props.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:29 am Comment from: Mac Cartney

For those of us that have complete CD collections of the Beatles, Apple will have to throw in some kind of incentive. Hope they get creative.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:50 am Comment from: Spark

"Yeah, Randian, and Les Paul is still going strong in his 90's!"

Maybe not his music, but his guitars are.

Regardless of whether one has a complete Beatles library or is totally disinterested in buying Beatles music today, the inescapable fact is that the Beatles were the most influential musical force in the second half of the 20th Century. Their addition to the ITS store, especially an exclusive deal, would serve as a symbolic recognition that Apple's ITS is the Gold Standard for digital music. I gaurantee that when it happens, it will make the covers of Newsweek and Time magazine. Of course, a lot of you here may not remember those old fashion collections of paper and print that you read without electricity.

Apr 12, 07 - 10:58 am Comment from: d

"Their addition to the ITS store, especially an exclusive deal, would serve as a symbolic recognition that Apple's ITS is the Gold Standard for digital music."

Right you are. If they end up having an exclusive deal with someone else it will be a recognition that there is another major player in the download game. There are artists who will follow them. (really, there are artists' agents, managers and lawyers who will follow them if the royalty structure is richer than Apple's)

Apr 12, 07 - 11:03 am Comment from: Dimplemonkey

You know for the older generation that already have their entire collection - this doesn't matter jack squat to you - but you already knew that.

Does that mean that the newer generation are not Beatles fans and would rather buy their music at the Wal Mart - of course not! When it comes to the dollars and sense of it all, Apple, EMI, and soon the Beatles will be catering to a newer, younger audience that do not own a record player, 8-track player, cassette player, or even a CD player! They own MP3 players and iPods!

Congratulations, current owners of all things Beatles except digital music. You are now considered the "last millennium" crowd. Go eat your Cream of Wheat and rub some Mentholatum on your joints!

Apr 12, 07 - 11:11 am Comment from: TowerTone

"rub some Mentholatum on your joints!"

Does that make them menthol? Like a Newport?

Apr 12, 07 - 11:20 am Comment from: Angelus520

Nice to see Les Paul getting his due on this board! The man is a genius.

Apr 12, 07 - 11:21 am Comment from: oh my

While many here dont hesitate to express their disdain for The Beatles.. I have to agree with Tommy Boy, d and razor's views ..
The Beatles opened the floodgates to a "new" form of music to an audience content with listening to cookie-cutter singers.
Yeah, they did change the music world, and the way music evolves ..
Problem is, today, it seems we are back to the cookie-cutter singers, singing a dozen notes when just one will do.. or even worse .. so-called "artists" who couldnt carry a tune in a bucket !

I would welcome The Beatles on iTunes, because it would be a major coup for His Steveness and Apple !

Apr 12, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: d

Speaking as a fogey, if the tracks have been remastered and come at a high enough bit rate that they sound better than what I have, I'll probably being buying at least a few albums for the 3rd time.

Pardon me while I make a Metamucel smoothie.

Apr 12, 07 - 11:38 am Comment from: chris

I get kind of depressed that EMI feels the need to keep flogging the same old stuff, and at premium prices for the Beatles stuff. I suppose they are still able to demand the price but it doesn't feel like value for money.

The Beatles seem never to be out of popularity, even with the younger generations, ditto Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Apr 12, 07 - 12:17 pm Comment from: FUDsucker Proxy

I can't wait for Enrico Caruso to be released on the iTS he do more to boost sales of wax cylinders than anyone else in history!

wink

Apr 12, 07 - 01:03 pm Comment from: d

Dickens and Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) still move wood pulp. Quality has a shelf life and new people discover it everyday.

Apr 12, 07 - 01:20 pm Comment from: @ FUDsucker

Caruso has been the single-most reissued "artist" in the history of the world. His recordings are reissued every time another format comes down the pike. Each reissue brings in truckloads of cash, each more than the previous reissue, and certainly more than the orginal recordings, even with the value of the dollar adjusted for inflation.

First, cylinders to 78 rpm acoustical disks, then acoustical disks to 78 rpm electrical disks, then to LPs and 45s, then to reel-to-reel tapes, then to eight-tracks, then to cassettes, then to CDs and now to digital.

Caruso is the biggest cash cow in existence — dead or alive.

Apr 12, 07 - 01:23 pm Comment from: Abdullah

I have all The Beatles music on vinyl and CD. But I will be in the virtual lineup - I predict it will be a long one - when their music goes on sale on iTunes.
As for those who say The Beatles are no longer relevant . . . son, it's time you listened to some REAL music!

Apr 12, 07 - 01:30 pm Comment from: Big Al

I bought a few vinyl albums on release. Then I bought the entire Beatles collection in cassette form and later still, in CD form. I ripped all of those CD's. By now, I have downloaded off P2P sites the rare, hard to find recordings I missed on CD.

I am sure anyone else who is really interested in Beatles music has already obtained a good electronic collection, one way or another.

The new releases will be re-mastered and remixed. They will not be the exact same recordings the Beatles originally released in order to restart the copyright clock.

Will the new offerings really be Beatles music?

Apr 12, 07 - 01:38 pm Comment from: Spark

@oh my
"it seems we are back to the cookie-cutter singers, singing a dozen notes when just one will do..."

I couldn't agree with you more!!!!!!!!!!!
(sorry, I guess just one ! would have done.)

Apr 12, 07 - 03:24 pm Comment from: misanthrope

I have the Beatles music. The only reason I bought a cd player was to have pristine Beatles music that wouldn't wear out.

But now I want the Dave Clark Five! What's up with Dave Clark? Has he got all the money he wants?

Apr 12, 07 - 04:36 pm Comment from: mackle

great thing about music is there is no shortage of opinions. you can have an opinion about something you know superficially quite easily. having in depth knowledge and passion based on that might be something of a generational thing. remember back in the days when us old folks would debate about how the beatles were self destructing because their music l kept evolving.

reflecting now is the giving me the realization their greatness was their ability to evolve without becoming irrelevant.

invite non-believers to listen to the ballad of john and yoko on something that has a subwoofer.

attend a sir paul concert even if you have never listened to a beatles song (if you can get a ticket).
