12-point wish list for Apple’s Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard

“Last week… others began discussing what they hope will be in Leopard. So I’m throwing my hat into [the] ring, because there are a couple of things under it that haven’t been mentioned elsewhere. Others, such as Automator and Spotlight improvements, everyone is asking for,” Chris Howard writes for Apple Matters.

Howard’s Wish List:
1. Automator usable and user-friendly
2. Screen partitioning
3. Wake up Macs remotely
4. Spotlight improvements
5. An application launcher
6. Screen captures
7. Notifications
8. Finder fixes:
– Tabbed windows
– Navigation when dragging and dropping
– Cut command on context menu
– Option to sort folders to the top of the file lists
– A refresh window key
9. Virtualization
10. Multi-user that works properly
11. Third-party utilities
12. Eye Candy

Each of the twelve points above is explained in the Full article here.

  1. hmmmm… this guy isn’t completely on it… we already have screen captures (Shift+Cmd+3=Full Screen, Shift+Cmd+4=Marquis Grab, Shift+Cmd+4+Spacebar= Window Selection)

I also find Automator to be very user-friendly, I just wish there were more applications it interacted with.

  2. The non-grouping of folders together in finder windows (and all file browser dialogues) is the #1 complaint I have with the Mac.

My #2 complaint is the inablity to delete or rename from the either the Save or Open browser windows.

My #3 complaint is that the universally available screen capture shortcuts produce a file on the desktop, when I’d rather have the capture image open, like what happens when you take a screen capture with Grab.

OK, This has grown into a list, I was just going to mention the folder grouping thing, but I’ll continue…

#4 Can’t wake remote Mac over Airport network. If I want to print something from my Powerbook, I want it to print, even if the Mac my printer is pluged into is in sleep mode. I actually bought a Mac mini just to work as a print server becuase my damn printer doesn’t play nice plugged directly into a Airport Express.

#5 Finder hangs forever when a connected volume is no longer available.

Even though I’m listing my complaints, Mac OS X is still heaven to use after spending an hour working on Windows XP.

  3. Dunno, it’ll have to offer more than that to get me to buy the new OS for my PowerMac. At least 10.4 offered widgets, automator and spotlight as an incentive to upgrade from 10.3.

These functions and features sound nice, but doesn’t rise to the level of a must have upgrade. They sound more like a patch to 10.4.

I hate to sound shallow; it’s just that I am shallow.

  4. Have we reached a point where each release won’t offer too much new stuff?

We’ve reached a point where commoners on MDN cannot come up with ‘improvements’ or ’12 wishes’ because most everything has been handled.

What’s actually in OS X5 will surprise.

  5. Number 3. on the list can be done now, if you can’t wait to see if apple includes this feature. There are other ways to wake up other Mac’s on your LAN, this method is one of the esaist…. get it here-> <a href=”http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/wakeonlan.html”>

  6. “My #2 complaint is the inablity to delete or rename from the either the Save or Open browser windows.”

There’s a utility thats been around for years called DefaultFolder that has been my favorite shareware app of all time that does just this and more.

  7. I would like to see Panther have some functions and features that continue to blow away everyone. I like it when I see the new OS and say, “Wow! How’d they do that? I didn’t know a computer could do something like that!”

Everything people have mentioned completely lack imagination. Apple is best when it pushes the industry forward rather than repainting old ideas with a new coat of varnish.

    Innovate, don’t merely regurgitate.

Small dreams don’t stir the soul or move mountains.
