Net Applications: Apple’s Mac ‘market share’ continues rise, hits 6.38% in February 2007
Thursday, March 01, 2007 - 10:36 AM EDT

Net Applications' "Market Share" has posted their operating system market share statistics for February 2007 showing Apple Macintosh share at 6.38% (4.29% for non-Intel-powered Macs and 2.09% for Intel-powered Macs). According to Net Applications' measurements, Mac market share rose 0.26% in a single month (following January's rise in Mac market share of 0.55% over December's 5.67% (4.15% for non-Intel-powered Macs and 1.52% for Intel-powered Macs).

Since August (4.33% total), Mac market share has risen 2.05 percentage points in just the past six months.

Net Applications' last six months of "Market Share" stats:
(Month: non-Intel Macs + Intel-powered Macs = total Mac market share)

AUG: 3.71% + 0.62% = 4.33%
SEP: 3.88% + 0.84% = 4.72%
OCT: 4.09% + 1.12% = 5.21%
NOV: 4.10% + 1.29% = 5.39%
DEC: 4.15% + 1.52% = 5.67%
JAN: 4.34% + 1.88% = 6.22%
FEB: 4.29% + 2.09% = 6.38%

Net Applications' "Market Share" uses a unique methodology for collecting this data. The company collects data from the browsers of site visitors to their exclusive on demand network of small to medium enterprise live stats customers. The sample size for these sites is more than 40,000 urls. The information published is an aggregate of the data from this network of hosted website statistics. The site unique visitor and referral information is summarized on a monthly basis. The websites in ther population represent dozens of countries in regions including North America, South America, Western Europe, Australia / Pacific Rim and Parts of Asia.

Reasons for Mac market share gains run the gamut from superior security vs. Windows, Apple's growing retail store network, the iPod Halo Effect, award-winning design, Mac OS X, Mac-only applications such as iLife, ease-of-use, the Mac's ability to run Mac OS X, Linux and Windows concurrently, word-of-mouth, excellent reviews, and more.

Net Applications' February 2007 "Market Share" stats here.

MacDailyNews Note: Different companies uses different methodologies, so the actual percentage figures aren't as meaningful as the trends they show. The important point is that Net Applications' measurements show that Mac's share continues to increase - up over 2 percentage points in just the last 181 days (Aug. 31, 2006 to Feb. 28, 2007).

MDN Magic Word: data (seriously), as in "This data is encouraging!!!"

I would like to see this contrasted with actual sales figures to see if the trend is as they say it is. 2% increase in 6 months is massive.

Mar 01, 07 - 11:43 am Comment from: iggy

More important than the "up 2 percentage points" stat, is the "up nearly 50-percent" in market share in the past six months.

With Leopard around the corner, iPhone around the corner, and new Mac hardwar around the corner (and maybe down the street a bit), things are looking well for Apple.

What is "Mac OS' and then "MacIntel". It's very deceiving to break up Mac users with those labels. You would think it would read Mac OS PPC and Mac OS Intel.

With no explanation, no one would add the two numbers together to get 6.38%. Because MacIntel seems like some Windows / Mac hybrid, like BootCamp or something.

Mar 01, 07 - 12:27 pm Comment from: Davidlow

This is about installed base, not market share.

"...market share statistics for February 2007 showing Apple Macintosh share at 6.38% (4.29% for non-Intel-powered Macs and 2.09% for Intel-powered Macs)"

If this quote were true, Apple would have had to sell lots and lots on non-Intel-powered Macs in February 2007 when in fact they no longer sell any non-Intel-powered Macs. Further, if they're measuring unique visitors to websites then the results really don't have anything to do with currrent sales, but past adoption rates.

It's still great news, but let's not start changing the meanings of words.

10% by 2008?

Mar 01, 07 - 01:07 pm Comment from: pgb0517

Please check your math ...

5.67% share to 6.22% share = 9.7 percent increase or .55 percentage point increase;
6.22% share to 6.38% share = 2.6 percent increase or .16 percentage point increase.

Mar 01, 07 - 01:13 pm Comment from: deleted

Davidlow said, "This is about installed base, not market share."

Exactly. I too am complaining about the awful use of the wrong word and concept in these reports. One can get some estimate of the market share growth using the differences from one time period w/r to another.

Also, remember that the numbers reported are for third party resellers and do not include Apple's online store or retail stores.

But celebrate anyway. The news is certainly positive.

Mar 01, 07 - 01:14 pm Comment from: Paul

Use of intel Macs more than tripled over a period when they were the only Macs being sold.It is strange that PPC Mac useage also increased. Is it that people are reluctant to expose Windows to the internet? Are more sites becoming Mac friendly?

Mar 01, 07 - 01:16 pm Comment from: LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son

"deleted" is me, LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son. Damn, I hate that damn filling of the name and email boxes with that "deleted" crap.

Mar 01, 07 - 02:00 pm Comment from: Davidlow

Paul, that's a very good point. How could the adoption of a product increase (4.15% to 4.29%) long after it ceases to be sold?

Mar 01, 07 - 02:02 pm Comment from: Mr. Anderson

At this rate it will be 10% by the end of the year and 20% by the end of 2008. You can not understate the importance those numbers will have in changing the OS landscape and the perception of OS Xs legitimacy and viability. And all of those percentage points will come from Microsoft's marketshare.

Look carefully, those of vultures hovering over Redmond.

Mar 01, 07 - 02:12 pm Comment from: jay

I doubt M$ is breaking out the life preservers just yet over 6.38%, but on the other hand, at one point that percentage market penetration is what the Japanese car companies had-and now, a few years later, all three US companies are on the ropes.

Mar 01, 07 - 02:18 pm Comment from: TydalForce

Its interesting that Feb was the first month that PPC dropped, but definitely awesome that the total percentages continue to increase!!

To those who wonder: There are still people purchasing PPC Macs. Even after Apple stopped manufacturing them, many stores still had some inventory. Even now, store.apple.com has a few PPC models on their Special Deals page.

Intel-based Macs are going to continue to grow, and the ratio will, of course, continue to move Intel-based. But PPC will stick around for a while.

Mar 01, 07 - 02:22 pm Comment from: Buster

Extrapolating the data, that means the market share will double every year.

WOW.

Mar 01, 07 - 02:32 pm Comment from: Stab the Man (the surreal one)

The WoW Starts Now!

MDN: real. No, really. For real

Mar 01, 07 - 02:37 pm Comment from: WiseGuy

Lets see.

Increasing Apple's market share 2% every six months will make it 100% market share in only 24 years!!!

Heck, I've waited since 1980, what's a couple more decades?

Of course I'm just joking, if Apple gains more than 50% of the market then the remaining 50% would fall all that much faster because all the developers would switch over completely.

Hail Jobs.

Mar 01, 07 - 02:57 pm Comment from: rahrens

While these numbers are encouraging to this old Mac fan (in more ways than one!), I really, really don't want Apple to go much over 40%.

Why?

Do we really want to see the DOJ start going after Apple like they now do M$?

I'd prefer a good healthy competitive OS market, with an increased percentage going to Linux distros, a large chunk going to Apple, and either the remainder staying with M$ or a new OS coming to the table to split with M$.

That would drive innovation like we've never seen in this industry!

But for now: GO Apple!

Mar 01, 07 - 02:57 pm Comment from: Davidlow

Yeah, and in 25 years it'll have a 102% market share!

Mar 01, 07 - 04:43 pm Comment from: Lar

As reported, the Mac share doesn't make sense. It's like saying 3% of cats plus 5% of dogs equals 8% of household pets. It would be more like 4% of pets.

Mar 01, 07 - 05:33 pm Comment from: Dave H

Apple don't need anymore than 10% of the market. Once Microsoft have a double-digit competitor, developers will start switching to open standards and the Microsoft lock-in is broken. Google, Open Source, Apple, Sun (for Java rather than Solaris), loads of companies can then capitalise on the opening market. The only losers will be the bunch from Redmond. Everyone else has room to grow.

Mar 01, 07 - 08:10 pm Comment from: RevNeal

I would be perfectly happy if the Macintosh OS platform had about 18-20% of the install market. This would ensure not only the survival of the Mac OS but also massive development of software.

At this rate of growth Macintosh will surpass 10% in 2008 and will be close to 20% by 2010. IF this rate of increase holds.
Of course, by then Windozers will be carping "but that's just a piddling 20%! Go with the majority at 80% ... the majority is always right!" Yeah, right.
And, of course, at 10-20% of the market I wonder if there will be any hackers who have finally managed to make Maulware, Spyware, and other forms of viruses to plague Macs. Somehow, I doubt we'll see much.

Mar 01, 07 - 11:22 pm Comment from: The Emperor

"I want that treaty SIGNED!"

Mar 02, 07 - 04:57 pm Comment from: lantzn

There are also a number of schools who still (sadly) run OS9 because of some apps and the new Intel machines don't run OS9.
This may be the reason folks are still buying PPC machines.

Mar 06, 07 - 10:32 pm Comment from: derek

Quoting 'market' share numbers from Net Applications is shameful. Their numbers should be discontinued here at MacDailyNews permanently. All this non-statistical, non-market related crap does is provide extremely fertile grounds for the WinTrolls to rant at us as being liars. And if anyone quotes this rubbish from Net Applications the WinTrolls would be absolutely right!!!

FACT: The most recent actual MARKET share numbers for Apple Macs worldwide indicated over 2.5%. The most recent market share numbers for specifically the USA indicates Apple Macs have 6% market share. This rise in Apple Mac market share was accompanied with a drop in Windows PC market share of 2%. This means we can reasonably predict that the Windows PC market share at the time of the data collection was NO LONGER 90%. It was 88%. Repeat that to yourself a few times. It is profoundly significant.

We won't know the current Apple Mac market share numbers until the next quarterly computer market sales numbers are released. The predictions are that there will be a holding pattern for both Windows PCs and Macs. PC sales have reportedly gone on the rise with the recent late arrival of Windows Vista. But the sales of Macs continue to be on the rapid ascendance as well. Net market share gain this quarter is likely to be near zero.

Stick to the FACTS folks. Macs have consistently been the best computers on the market, and that has been proven throughout their history with facts.

Leave it to the WinTrolls to do the lying and sadomasochistic manipulation of public ignorance. No thank you Net Applications. Get lost.

:-Derek

May 18, 07 - 10:40 am Comment from: Filipe

According to Net Applications, Windows is used by "only" 91.36% of the market. That's a tuff fact to swallow, isn't it, sad Apple fanboys?
By the way, on the period Macs market share gew 2%, Vista grew more than 3% and has already more market share than MacIntel.
I know it's hard to swallow, but these facts, LOL.
