Time Magazine ‘Person of the Year’ cover uses Apple iMac
Sunday, December 17, 2006 - 10:15 AM EDT

Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" cover uses an Apple iMac (at least its foot, the rest is covered by a mirror with a YouTube controller across the bottom) and an Apple keyboard to illustrate 2006's recipient(s), "You... for seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, Time's Person of the Year for 2006 is you."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: This is a nice subliminal ad for Apple. After all, if "you" are shown to be using an Apple iMac, the many "yous" who aren't may at least begin to wonder why they aren't. Technically, according to the illustration, Time's "Person of the Year" is you, a Mac user.

Also note: from what we can see in the Time image, the white Apple keyboard retains it's Command key "splats," but the "open Apple" symbols appear have been photoshopped away.

"That'll piss off Gates."

Except that it doesn't really look like an iMac any more...

Most readers will think it just looks like a white version of their PC keyboard and flat screen.

"..but the "open Apple" symbols appear have been photoshopped away."

"photoshopped" is not a verb -

Dec 17, 06 - 11:36 am Comment from: 2Shae

I saw something about TIME magazine "person of the year" on CNN today.
I noticed that they use iMac's. There were 2 iMac standing there in the background.

Dec 17, 06 - 11:40 am Comment from: mac Genius

It is still a total cop-out vis-a-vis person of the year, worse even than 1982's "Personal Computer" designation. TIME's editors really wimped-out this year.

Dec 17, 06 - 12:15 pm Comment from: tune zang

He wait a minute. either I'm not apple geeky enough, or someone is making an assumption. How can it be determined to be an iMac rather than an apple monitot on a power mac?

Brilliant comment from "You"

Coigning usage like "photoshop" as a verb is way language naturally evolves—either the term will thrive or it won't.

Some can debated whether it's an iMac or an Apple Monitor. No one can debate whether it's a Hell, HP or a Mac!

Rock on Steve!

Dec 17, 06 - 12:27 pm Comment from: Dave

Because of the aspect ratio.

Dec 17, 06 - 12:35 pm Comment from: Switched

Time's person of the year is "you"? Time's having more and more difficulties choosing the person of the year. When they had some balls they could actually choose even someone like Hitler or Stalin when there was an honest reason for it. Now, political correctness seems to have taken over their Person of the Year policy.

Dec 17, 06 - 12:39 pm Comment from: Tonybiker

The base is an iMac I have one!

Dec 17, 06 - 12:46 pm Comment from: Gavron

Tonybiker,

I have the iMac base as well - couldn't afford the computer/screen part on top though.

Dec 17, 06 - 12:49 pm Comment from: Stab the Man (the surreal one)

Not to take away from the nicety of having a Mac-like image on the cover,
but this has got to be the stupidest, most incredulous, moronic thing Time magazine has ever done. Talk about cop-out. Talk about ass-kissing, side-stepping, brown-nosing, proselytizing...

Dec 17, 06 - 12:58 pm Comment from: Rod Moodie

That's clearly an Apple Computer. iMac or Power Mac does not matter.

MDN is absolutely correct in stating that "This is a nice subliminal ad for Apple".

iMac, therefore I am - the "Time Magazine Person of the Year!"

Steve Jobs will be the Person of the Year for 2007. Mark my words. So chill out on that subject.

And to the anal-retentive grammar/spelling/punctuaion people:

GET AN ILIFE!!! LOL.

Dec 17, 06 - 12:59 pm Comment from: BuriedCaesar

So TIME would have had to pay Apple for the rights to use the image of their logo on the keyboard, but since it was removed, they don't have to pay for depicting the base of the iMac or distinctively designed keyboard?

Interesting.

"A shemale is not a woman." he is where I'm at.

Dec 17, 06 - 01:12 pm Comment from: alansky

If Time had any brains, they would never have concocted a "person of the year" contest where the likes of Adolph Hitler and George Bush qualified for consideration. Beyond absurd. Utterly meaningless.

Dec 17, 06 - 01:16 pm Comment from: The pedants are revolting

"photoshopped" is not a verb -

you're right - it's a past participle!

Me:

Neither is "Google" a verb. That doesn't stop people from "Googling" for information.

One of the marvels of the (at least American) English language is how it adapts to the needs of the time.

It looks like the newly designed MicroSoft keyboard - coming out in early 2007.... and maybe their new monitor design.... just a guess.

Dec 17, 06 - 01:39 pm Comment from: ProbablyNot

Some can debated whether it's an iMac or an Apple Monitor. No one can debate whether it's a Hell, HP or a Mac!"

If you personally know exactly like what an iMac base looks like, it looks like a different screen shape photoshopped onto the iMac or Mac monitor base.

If you just look at it quickly you think it's a stylized version of just about any PC monitor.

Dec 17, 06 - 01:43 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Be careful with the liberal use of photoshop and its derivatives. Remember Photoshop is a copyrighted name and you guys have probably not bought a license to use it. Without a legitimate authorization key you could be accused of using Abode property without permission.

Off topic: I saw a billboard from Rambus the other day. Their tagline us "license to speed" which is kind of a finger to everyone saying we've got the patents on this technology and we're gonna screw you for as much as we can get.

BBC World did a programme tonight on this years Nobel Laureates (mostly Americans), including short descriptions of their achievements - showing the scientists at their respective universities, which included Berkeley and Stamford.

Two Macs came into view on serperate occasions in the background of the various shots, and then one of the laureates was filmed busily typing on a MacBook Pro.

I think that sort of publicity is great for Apple. This programme was shown all over the world and suggests quite simply: Nobel Prize winners and acedemics at elite universities use Macs.

Dec 17, 06 - 04:35 pm Comment from: verb me

BuriedCaesar, It's editorial usage. Time doesn't have to pay anybody anything. The other exception is satire.

Dec 17, 06 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Chris W.

I think they used the Apple elements simply because of good design, not to mention that Time has done quite a few glowing reviews of Apple's tech. It looks the best on the cover, compared to Dell or HP products.

As for the choice, some may say copout, but I say that it's nice to recognize the general populace. Normally I'm cynical, but I'm feeling generous.

Dec 17, 06 - 05:40 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

TIME is a Mac shop. They plug the Mac whenever they can.

Dec 17, 06 - 06:13 pm Comment from: tommy

irregardless of the cover art... 'You' is the person of the year?
thats really lame.

Dec 17, 06 - 06:18 pm Comment from: Remaining Nameless

The issue before this one, if anyone noticed, has a picture of a school desk on the cover, with an apple (fruit) sitting on it.
When you turn the page, there is a 2 page ad for a macbook pro!

Subliminal?
I think not!

Dec 17, 06 - 06:34 pm Comment from: 8R

Worked for me! Just ordered a 15" MacBook Pro with AppleWorks. No MS crap on the new one. Mac since 1988.

Dec 17, 06 - 06:40 pm Comment from: is this right??

So apparently the Person of the Year:

1. Uses an iMac;

"seizing the reins of the global media,"<i>

2. accesses the Internet, has an iPod, and buys though iTunes;

<i>"for founding and framing the new digital democracy,"<i>

3. blogs;

<i>"for working for nothing"<i>

4. is employed at Wal-Mart; and:

<i>"beating the pros at their own game"<i>

5. rejects Microsoft and the Dilbert corporate clone culture.

Did Time make a fully accurate assessment??

I agree with earlier posts: where is Time's ability to name an actual, single <i>person
??

Photoshop can evolve into a verb as easily as "xerox" did 30 years ago... but thanks for the useless comment--followed by a superflous "back and forth." lol

@ Me:

irregardless: |ˌiriˈgärdlis|

adjective & adverb informal regardless.

ORIGIN early 20th cent.: probably a blend of irrespective and regardless

USAGE Irregardless, with its illogical negative prefix, is widely heard, perhaps arising under the influence of such perfectly correct forms as: irrespective. Irregardless is avoided by careful users of English. Use regardless to mean 'without regard or consideration for' or 'nevertheless': | I go walking every day regardless of season or weather.

Dictionaries buddy, *dictionaries.*
