Can we be sure that 58% of iPod users are even considering a new player, iPod or not?

Personally, I'd go for the turd.

I believe that they asked if they would consider the Zune. When I go shopping, I "consider" a lot of options. You'd be unwise not to consider the options that are out there, either prior to shopping or during shopping. However, "considering" and "highly likely" are two very disparate ideas.

Surveys cost money to conduct. That is why they have sponsors. They need someone to pay the bill. So fif the sponsor has an agenda, the surveyor will shape the survey to satisfy the sponsor's agenda.

In this case, MSFT (who I'm sure paid for the survey) wants to create an atmosphere among player users that the Zune is more desireable than the iPod. Hence a survey with wording/methodology that isn't objective.

76% of statistics are made up on the spot.

46% of people don't know this.

Of those 46%, 20% don't have a clue what you're talking about.

It looks as if the Microsoft Zune shills are already starting the FUD program against the iPod.

Nothing "just yet" about it the potential threat.

Just show me another company that has hardware/software/design/innovation and common sense galore that Apple has..? It has new products lined up like ducks waiting to be shot.

iPod is safe. Very safe.

I'm an iPod owner and going to get a new iPod soon. Zune would make a great paper weight. Don't really see much other use for it.

Jim, Mr Ballmer just pulled Zune out of his ass, why would he put it back up there?

A better suggestion would be to put it up the ass of Bill Gates or possibly the CEO of Creative.

Still if you're stuck on Ballmer doing an ingest, how about if he swallows it? Now that would have some scientific merit also, we'd all learn if Zune is toxic.

Chances are the respondents thought the Zune WAS an iPod if all they were shown were pictures.

The white and black ones superficially look like iPods as long as their brickish depth isn't shown.

I own 3 iPods, so that makes me three iPod owners, and none of us is going to buy a Zune.

I just bought my 2nd Mp3 player. A refurbished ipod shuffle for $29.00.

I have 2 iPods and will be buying the iPhone/Widescreen Video if it's anywhere near as cool as it looks like it will be.

I am not considering a Zune at all.

My family has four iPods and none of us are buying a Zune. I'm waiting for the new touchscreen iPod, if there really is one that is.

The key word to this survey is "consider."
Personally I would consider it...then after doing a little research reject a Zune entirely.
Just because I would "consider" it doesn't mean I would buy one.

This guy's got it right. I'd plug my my headphones into a turd anyday over a Zune.

HIGHLY doubtful. But, the media also like a good fight and will do what they can to portray competition that people have to "stay tuned to." Hence the perpetual term iPod killer. There has been no iPod killer. Not even an iPod stalker or crazy girlfriend.

Zune will appeal to some. Fine. But no big deal, it's not making iPod go anywhere. If anything, it will be interesting to see Apple really turn up the heat on product development. And watch Apple zig and zag while M$ chases behind screaming not to be left behind.

I would choose the turd over the Zune any day, because at least the turd is honest about what it is and what it is not.

ZUNE is an ugly product with an ugly name. All that money, and this is what Microsoft came up with? It's as though Apple has hired all the good marketing people in the world and the rest hire "TURDS." It never ceases to amaze me.

The conclusion was not that 58% of iPod owners would buy a Zune. The conclsuion was: Of all the iPod owners asked that stated they were going to buy another mp3 player within the nexy year, 58% of THOSE people would consider a Zune. Not 58% of all the people surveyed.

again, it's not 58% of all the iPod owners asked, but merely 58% of the people who said they'd be interested in buying another mp3 player within the next year.


Furthermore, let's look at this:

The consumer survey was conducted in October 2006. Respondents were provided a photo and description of the Microsoft Zune device before being asked about their likelihood to choose it over a competitive MP3 player.

This completely assumes that people make electronics purchases based on what they read and see a picture of. Which anyone with half a brain knows is a complete falsehood. We these peope shown photos of other mp3 players? Were descriptions read to them? How were the descriptions worded? Were they asked if they'd choose any of the other devices by name, or was the choice "Zune or Other?"

I'd rather switch to a cassette Walkman than a Zune from Microsoft.

I have a table that wobbles. I think a Zune would fit under that leg perfectly. My iPod is just too small. So, yes, I'd switch.
