SmugMug photo-sharing site uses ‘super reliable’ Apple Xserve RAID units to store over 300TB of data
Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - 12:22 PM EDT

Take a peek inside Silicon Valley's new Equinix data warehouse as CNET News.com's Neha Tiwari speaks with SmugMug.com CEO Don MacAskill about how online photos are uploaded and shared on the Web. See the facility and learn how to tell when some clicks on a photo.

SmugMug.com uses Apple Xserve RAID units ("super reliable hardware," MacAskell says) to store all of their users photo data. Each individual Apple Xserve RAID holds 7TB of data; Smugmug.com is currently storing over 300TB of user data on the Apple machines.

The video is 2 minutes and 4 seconds in length and shows Apple products throughout here.

smugmug rocks! I love it. Nice to hear it uses Apple server technology.

Funny, SmugMug seems be well established, and yet I've never heard of them until today. They seem to have quite the nifty operation going there.

NOW IF Apple would make a decent, powerful, easy to us and customizable server software they would sell servers too.

This shows the problem and why Apple is not making inroads in server space (outside of the G5 processor which nobody else sold)

Brought to you by microsoft sql server...

whoops! Somehow i doubt it's using any microsoft server products on those xserves, or he wouldn't state "super dependable hardware"

And to prove my point, MDN is running on Linux.

MDN runs on Linux after running Mac OS X and FreeBSD?

No it's on Linux with Apache and PHP.

How do you figure a server to be running more than one OS at a time anyway?

Mac OS X server just plains sucks.

Aug 30, 06 - 01:28 pm Comment from: Netcraft

IT Tech,

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

MDN used to run on Mac OS X, then FreeBSD, and now on Linux.

It's what the sites' web host uses that dictates the OS, not the site.

Hey IT Tech, maybe you should head on over to roughlydrafted to find out why the anandtech tests were complete bollocks. Then again, I'm sure you're not really interested, as it wouldn't gell with your world view.

I'm glad you're not an IT Tech in our company!
