Everyday I grow a little more ashamed of the fact I am a Mac user because I know that for every one of you 17 year old iPod toting asses complaining about free Mac software there are thousands of others who don't know what it was like before we had open source programmers on the Mac. Or many developers at all for that matter.

Who gives a f&*k about the icons? Only you pansies. Please go back to Windows if all you have is negative comments.

This is what free open source software (FOSS) is about. Unless you really have to have a Microsoft product on your Mac, it is far better to deny them the income by using FOSS -- Open Office in this case. Stop feeding MS, the unethical crap producing competitor to Apple. Starve the b*st*rds.

I'm a long-time Mac user, and am continuously embarrassed about the vapid fanboys and their uninformed preocupations.

iWork and NeoOffice are in their early days. I reckon about 2 or three major releases from now, and we'll see two very adequate alternatives.

I for one would like to encourage both effors.

oh really?! the current free version of neooffice is over 119MB. kinda a big file transfer don't you think via email?

The beta version is not yet free (Bill McCloskey is right). You can download an alpha version for free now, but to get the beta you can pay US$25 for Early Access program membership, or US$60 for Early Access program subscription, or wait until 29 August and get the beta for free. MDN's headline is correct, so far as it goes.

I agree with you, dUDE - there are some nit-picky sumbitches here, and it's really going overboard to gripe about foss.

But damn, them are some mofugly, win95-lookin' icons. I haven't seen anything that ugly since the latest Lotus Notes release...

Yes the *** OLD *** version had a lot of doze-isms.

This is the new *** AQUA *** version. Don't you think you should try it and see what the widgets and upgraded icons are like before you let loose?

Yes, it will cost you a few bucks if you want it now (but still much less than the cost of m$ office from the Microsoft Felon). Alternatively, you can wait a month and it will be free.

I'm sure its not perfect, but most of the dozeisms, especially the most glaring ones (like the file open dialog) are gone.

Now if somebody has taken the time to download and can make an informed comment based on actual usage...

the developers are serious professional people who don't sprout crap unlike some other companies.

what they are saying is that this is a serious piece of work that works well. and, if they don't think is ready for release (isn't stable enough), they won't release it (again, unlike some other 'professional' companies).

i can personally verify this. i've been using neooffice for several years, through several releases. it is solid as a rock, once released.

personally, i think they overplay this point - are underselling. the reply the developers give is that they don't want to over-raise expectations, since they're not a huge company with a lot of resources.

you will be amazed at how responsive the developers are to issues, and how supportive the community is, in general.

I would like to see iconfactory.com allow the use of one of their stockicons.com sets for FREE to the developers programming NeoOffice. It would be nice PR for them too.

Fortunately, this is Open Source which among other things means you and all the other whining, arm chair qb's are welcome to add something useful to the project.
