Apple should provide ‘Windows Migration Assistant’ in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Friday, July 07, 2006 - 03:10 PM EDT

Switch To A Mac asks, "Wouldn't it be grand if Apple included a Windows Migration Assistant in Leopard that could intelligently facilitate the switch and make it so easy that Windows users wouldn't have difficulty moving their files over to a Mac?"

"What if Apple made it easier to transfer files? Apple wouldn’t have to promote third-party software and it could make the task so easy that even the most novice computer user could transfer their files," Switch To A Mac writes.

Switch To A Mac writes, "Considering Apple's "Get A Mac" advertising campaign and efforts to get people to make the switch, I'd like to see an assistant in OS X 10.5 Leopard that streamlines the transfer process but intelligently scans the Windows computer for files such as documents, photos, email, etc. The only thing the user needs to provide is the connection information to their old Windows system, the Windows Migration Assistant should handle the rest."

First post.

Yes.

It's cheese. That's what they're about. The nightmares.

Always more cheese.

Common sense.

So I used the Tiger Install package (not the installer) to install Tiger on an external partition. When I rebooted it asked me if I want to copy the settings (yes) and/or the files (no) from another partition on the same machine. Make it so the installer can see another machine on the same network Windows, Linux, or Mac and they've got a winner.

Now there's an idea.

Jul 07, 06 - 03:34 pm Comment from: Brandon

Definitely not a bad idea. If Leopard really has a Windows application layer, it could even grab the applications.

Windows to Mac migration assistant? Yeah, it's called Move2Mac from Detto Technologies and it's been around like ...forever: http://www.detto.com/move2mac/
Apple even talks about this product on its own website:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/switch/howto/software.html

Jul 07, 06 - 03:43 pm Comment from: Peter

Call me snarky, but this is not something Apple should do--this already exists.

If I could be a bird, I'd be a Flying Purple People Eater because then people would sing about me and I could fly down and eat them because I hate that song.

Jul 07, 06 - 04:06 pm Comment from: MacBill

This is such a great idea. I'm ashamed that I didn't think of this idea first, it's so good.

Jul 07, 06 - 04:08 pm Comment from: bhel

Note that the switchtoamac article mentions Move2Mac but the idea posted on the article goes one step further.

What's interesting in the switchtoamac article would be the ability to import those files into iLife. Move2Mac doesn't do that.

Jul 07, 06 - 04:08 pm Comment from: Channel Z

This is a excellent idea. The Move2Mac software should be included on all new consumer Mac's.

Jul 07, 06 - 05:19 pm Comment from: scott

in reality, wouldn't we just need to tell the new mac the window's computer ip address? re-engineer a windows virus to copy documents instead of deleting them, then just 'infect' the old computer? i'm sure it would be easy.

Jul 07, 06 - 07:13 pm Comment from: NickBob

I've never owned a Windows(TM) box, and I don't want to pay for the software or have it sit on my hard drive. Apple can and should discount Move2Mac at their stores and resellers, sure; but we don't all need it.

Jul 07, 06 - 07:23 pm Comment from: woof-x

Oh sure! And why don't we just move files THROUGH THIN AIR while we're at it?? Sheesh.

Jul 07, 06 - 08:32 pm Comment from: na

it's called procare

Jul 07, 06 - 09:49 pm Comment from: Ampar

Or just pay a small team of teenagers to write simple viruses that routinely wipe the hard drives of all Windows PCs. Or is that already the plan? (I know, black helicopters, foil hats . . .)

tongue wink

Jul 07, 06 - 10:21 pm Comment from: Ampar

But let's call it, "Windows Escape Assistant."

Jul 08, 06 - 12:23 am Comment from: somejerk

Hey how about, Apple should also privide breast feeding services for my child?!?

Apple should have this, apple should do this, apple should do that. Don't mess up the data on my Mac, I'm already happy.

Jul 08, 06 - 03:26 pm Comment from: Joe

Personally, I am not in favor of anything that helps PC people make the switch if it causes even the smallest amount of trouble or expense to a Mac user. Quit holding their hands. They figured out windoze, let em figure out the Mac. Quit treating them like we need them. Let them ask/beg for help or let them continue to flounder in their PC virus stew. We Mac folks have lived and thrived without any help from the PC crowd. Why are we trying to help them? Do you want every Tom Dick and Harry using a Mac? I don't. It will destroy the elitism of using a Macintosh. Why must we bring everything down to the lowest common denominator?

Jul 08, 06 - 04:04 pm Comment from: TimD

Shouldn't this be Vista's new nickname?

Jul 08, 06 - 05:04 pm Comment from: Akido

TimD: Vista's nickname is already Tiger

Joe -- then maybe Apple shouldn't have even put the Migration Assistant into OS X; if people have to hassle moving their files from one computer to another, too bad.

I love the Migration Assistant; I've used it twice (going from my clamshell iBook to my iBook G4, and again to copy applications/files from the iBook G4 to the Intel iMac). Anything that can help Windows users make the switch is fine with me...that's going to help more people actually make the switch.

And I don't use a Mac because I want to feel superior...I use it because it freakin' WORKS, and I can be far more productive in my work and my play. I don't have to worry about viruses (I do have virus protection software, but that's just to be extra safe), I don't have any major system crashes, and I can handle most problems myself instead of having a $50/hour computer guru take up residence in my home (which is what my dad-in-law has practically had to do while he converts from Win2K to XP).

And the more people who switch from Windows to Mac, the more productive they will be...which is good overall for our society and our economy...

Apple has its own Windows to Mac Migration Assistant, but it is for migrating Windows NT Server to OS X Server. I would think that writing a piece of software for migrating Windows to OS X 10.5.x should be a piece of cake. Apple should make it available to anyone who walks into the Apple Store and is interested in switching to OS X.

Potential switchers could run the app on their Windows system, have it backup all files, and give a point-by-point run down of what system they would need and what Mac apps will replace their Windows apps. It would then create a document for them to print and take back to the store for purchasing.

Once the Switcher arrived home to install their new Mac, on boot up the system would ask for the migration disk and then proceed to help them setup and then move their files to the proper location.

Okay, dreamin....
