“Apple reportedly plans to launch three OLED-based new iPhone devices in 2020 available in 5.42-, 6.06- and 6.67-inch sizes, respectively, according to sources from Taiwan’s handset component supply chain,” Rebecca Kuo and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes. “Additionally, the 5.42-inch model to be released in 2020 may come with either Samsung Display’s Y-Octa or LG Display’s TOE touch technology, indicated the sources, noting that both touch solutions promises to trim down the display cost.”
“Y-Octa is an advanced flexible AMOLED display technology that removes the film substrate and allows the touch circuit to be directly patterned on the film’s encapsulation layer, making the display thinner, indicated the sources,” Kuo and Shen report.
“For 2019, Apple will continue to roll out three models following the screen technologies and sizes of the three phones launched in 2018: two OLED models available in 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch screens, and a 6.1-inch LCD model, the sources said,” Kuo and Shen report. “The sources estimated Apple is likely to ship 80-82 million iPhone devices in the first half of 2019 and about 180-190 million units for all of the year.”

MacDailyNews Take: If true, the 5.42-inch iPhone might appease those who like smaller iPhones. An X-class iPhone with a 5.42-inch edge-to-edge display would be much closer to the size of an iPhone SE than an iPhone X/XS.
Once Apple standardizes on OLED, hopefully they will clean up their naming mess by simplifying to something like:
• iPhone Max (2020)
• iPhone (2020)
• iPhone mini (2020)

The smallest the better!
That’s NOT what she said! 🙂
size does matter
5.42 inches would be as large as an iPhone 8. That is still physically too large.
Yes it would be. Personally, I find the physical size of the iPhone 8 to be the sweet spot. I would welcome an X-class iPhone of this size
But surely as it will be edge to edge the physical size will be smaller than an 8
Just checked, my SE is around 5.3 inches overall so the size difference will be minimal but with a markedly larger screen so bring it on it sounds like this just might be my next phone.
IPhones are thin enough.
I care about small, battery life, and IP67 (or IP68).
I have an SE now and really dont want a small tablet as a phone. I usually wear long sleeve shirts with a great pocket and the SE fits in it perfect. When I dont have a pocket, I cant imagine trying to cram an 8 or X in my front jeans pocket. A nicer and faster “SE” would be neat.
SMALL PLEEEASE.
My heavy and hefty XR is wearing out my pockets – or at least, the ones that it will fit inside.
Don’t denigrate the smallest phone with the term “Mini.” I suggest iPhone, iPhone Plus, iPhone Max.
You ask too much. Apple denigrates Mac users ad nauseum, why not start on iOS gadget users too?
Frankly, all of Apple’s marketing tags are all complete rubbish, and have been meaningless for a long time. Shiller should be embarrassed to present such an inconsistent mess. Air. Pro. Nano. Mini. Max. XR. Extreme. XS. Then Apple denotes some stuff via display sizes, the model years, or the double internal Apple model codes. But wait, there’s more: Apple also inconsistently trots out colors sometimes, and code(red) costs more than the standard color. Still got a U2 special edition iPod? Hang onto it, it still performs better than a Series Whatever watch at playing music. Then we get into using features to differentiate between a Touchbarless MacBook Pro and one with the useless gimmick bar.
It figures, nobody actually does any marketing at Apple these days. They just iterate the chassis from 4 years ago with the latest chipset and tack on another random marketing name pulled from the fishbowl. Takes too much time to think about product lineups when you have App Store money to count in the Caribbean.
I phone 5SE X version is just right for my needs. Use the SE thickness to add more battery life. I already have an iMac when I need the bigger screen.
