“Apple Inc. plans to launch iPhones with a more-powerful 3-D camera as soon as next year, stepping up the company’s push into augmented reality, according to people familiar with the plans,” Mark Gurman and Debby Wu report for Bloomberg. “The rear-facing, longer-range 3-D camera is designed to scan the environment to create three-dimensional reconstructions of the real world. It will work up to about 15 feet from the device, the people said. That’s in contrast with the current iPhone 3-D camera system, which points toward users and operates at distances of 25 to 50 centimeters to power Apple’s Face ID facial-recognition feature.”
“Apple’s new system uses a laser scanner, rather than the existing dot-projection technology,” Gurman and Wu report. “That’s just one of many new features — including a third, more advanced camera, enhanced photo-capture tools and a more powerful chip — that Apple plans to include in coming generations of iPhones, the people said.”
“The laser-powered 3-D camera would enhance augmented reality on the iPhone, allowing for more accurate depth perception and placement of virtual objects,” Gurman and Wu report. “Apple previously aimed to put the new 3-D camera system on the back of this year’s high-end iPhones, but delayed that, the people familiar also said. Still, the Cupertino, California-based technology giant is doubling down on camera capabilities for its handsets. For 2019, Apple plans successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max — code-named D42 and D43 — and an update to the iPhone XR, said the people. The larger of the new high-end iPhones will have three cameras on the back, and other handsets could eventually come with the upgraded system, too, the people said… The laser-powered 3-D camera could debut first on an upgrade to the iPad Pro currently planned for as early as spring 2020, according to one of the people.”

Nailed it. Not willing to pay $1200-$1500 for a phone, then add Canada’s egregious mobile rates on top of that. Never imagined I would be expected to pay $250 per month for 2 cell phones!!

That’s right joell, you’re dead on. Cook likes 40-percent bumps on products, year over year. He also likes 85% profit margins. Even mob loansharks aren’t that greedy.
His highest margins are on storage. For example: Cook charges $2000 for 4TB of storage on a Macbook Pro, where that storage costs Apple, buying in bulk with its economies of scale, approximately 20 bucks. Do the math.
That’s right folks.
$1,980 worth of profit on an item that only cost $20 is a 9,900% markup. I just round it up to 10,000%.

This is about 3d depth measurement/perception and placement of virtual, computer generated objects in 3d augmented reality space.

Well, um, hang on, I don’t know the Crow’s history but I agree with the opinion and am not filled with hate. To me Touch ID, 3D touch, a headphone jack and great battery life are good things. I’m going to keep using my 6s as long as possible because frankly it’s an excellent design and none of the subsequent “innovations” justify what’s now missing from Apple’s offerings. Maybe there are more folks like me who already have as much tech as they need and would buy a new iPhone SE”s” for the processor upgrade and better battery life but who couldn’t care less about Face ID, the fugly notch and such. Just saying.

Maybe I’m a Luddite in some ways, but what’s the point of AR/VR? It’s a serious question that I don’t understand. Maybe I’m too old? The first computer I ever used was a ][+ in 5th grade (Oregon Trail, FTW) and I was almost 12 when the Mac came out, so maybe? Though I am old enough to remember the Viewmaster and that was pretty cool 🙂 I’ve never been a gamer, so maybe that’s it?
I know Steve Jobs liked to give us things we needed that we didn’t know yet, but I don’t see how I’d use AR/VR in my daily life.
