“Facebook Inc. executive and virtual-reality wunderkind Palmer Luckey was a rising star of Silicon Valley when, at the height of the 2016 presidential contest, he donated $10,000 to an anti-Hillary Clinton group,” Kirsten Grind and Keach Hagey report for The Wall Street Journal. “His donation sparked a backlash from his colleagues. Six months later, he was out. Neither Facebook nor Mr. Luckey has ever said why he left the social-media giant. When testifying before Congress about data privacy earlier this year, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg denied the departure had anything to do with politics.”
“Mr. Luckey, it turns out, was put on leave, then fired, according to people familiar with the matter. More recently, he has told people the reason was his support for Donald Trump and the furor that his political beliefs sparked within Facebook and Silicon Valley, some of those people say,” Grind and Hagey report. “Internal Facebook emails suggest the matter was discussed at the highest levels of the company. In the fall of 2016, as unhappiness over the donation simmered, Facebook executives including Mr. Zuckerberg pressured Mr. Luckey to publicly voice support for libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, despite Mr. Luckey’s yearslong support of Mr. Trump, according to people familiar with the conversations and internal emails viewed by The Wall Street Journal.”
“Mr. Luckey, who is 26 years old, hired an employment lawyer who argued to Facebook that it had violated California law, according to people familiar with the conversations, in pressuring the executive to voice support for Mr. Johnson and for punishing an employee for political activity,” Grind and Hagey report. “Then Mr. Luckey and his lawyer negotiated a payout of at least $100 million, representing an acceleration of stock awards and bonuses he would have received through July 2019, plus cash, according to the people familiar with the matter. The stock awards and bonuses were a result of selling his virtual-reality company, Oculus VR, to Facebook in 2014 for more than $2 billion, a deal that netted him a total of about $600 million.”
“Mr. Luckey has been a longtime supporter of Mr. Trump and wrote a letter to the then-reality-television star in 2011 urging him to run for president. Mr. Luckey has told friends that reading Mr. Trump’s book The Art of the Deal at age 13 sparked his entrepreneurial imagination,” Grind and Hagey report. “After the incident, Mr. Luckey became more, not less, political. One month after he left Facebook, he hosted a fundraiser for Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. He has since founded Anduril, an Orange County-based tech company focused on using artificial intelligence to protect troops, performing search-and-rescue missions and bringing ‘Silicon Valley thinking and funding to defense,’ according to its website.”

Second, it’s a stretch to call any 26 year old virtual goggle seller a rising star of Silicon Valley. Real rising stars don’t work for Fuckerberg.
Third, this is a Fuckbook issue, not a Silicon Valley issue. Fuckerberg almost certainly wanted Palmer out because of drastically differing visions for the future of Oculus tech.
Fourth, Fuckerberg would be happy to use any technicality of labor contract to stab someone in the back. To use the worn out phrase, “it’s in his DNA”. It is Palmer’s own fault that he joined such a corrupt social network in the first place.
I don’t see why this is posted on a supposedly Apple news page. This has nothing to do with Apple or other Silicon Valley companies, most of which are socially progressive but fiscally conservative or libertarian. Palmer’s opinions don’t get him in trouble with anyone else in the Valley.
Of course that won’t make for exciting press so MDN, despite pretending to believe the Trumpist bullshit that all press is evil, is happy to repeat speculation from those that don’t know the inside story. I think Trump is a joke, and if I asked any of my Reagan-era republican friends if he’d be president a few years ago, they would laugh. But since I won’t openly discuss my politics, they assume I’m a Trump supporting idiot. These same people also think religion is a mental illness..but treat politics like religion…interesting.
I do sympathise with you. Politics and religion should not be a condition of your employment, but if they are, you have some constitutional protections. Sadly, some of the people we work with challenge these things all the time. Our legal system is stuffed with cases where people got into your face about things they really should have just let go, live and let live. But people can, at times, be such insufferable bastards!

I really can’t comprehend the way online dialog has deteriorated to this. I read these comments more to try to understand how the people on both sides think, but more so, why they think the way they do. I have to skim most of the comments to glean comments from those thoughtful comments that accomplish that. I always want to ‘hear’ from a few commenters such as @herself and @theloniousmac and a few others because they convey things to think about. I have to skim the trash (vile) comments to get the gist of the context of thinking people comments.
The insults, hating of other positions, are getting us nowhere. I don’t know why either side of the arguments bother. Do any of you such posters really think you are accomplishing anything by spewing crap without reasoning?

The subtext to this drama is that Luckey Palmer is another one of those civilian Pentagon worshipers who wants to see no distinction between civilian and military about which President Eizenhower warned the US in one of his speeches. The fusing is coming to fruition and Palmer is on the forefront spearheading the effort.

Actually the underlying issue goes to Palmer’s education, or lack thereof. He has strong political opinions that are not rooted in facts. With his millions he has sponsored misogynistic troll farms. An educated person usually develops the ability to work with others who don’t look or act exactly like you do. Needless to say, Palmer is reaping the intolerance backlash that he sowed.
On clickbait MDN however, the alt right troll farm will protect Luckey no matter what he did. None of the extreme right wing commentators here have done anything bit label what they don’t like with a broad brush, then denigrate and insult the straw men they erected. They aren’t even interested in facts. Look at the vapid content of the alt right posts.

Thwre isn’t a liberal and a conservative party in the USA. There are crazy spenders, drunk ass spenders, and lying carnival barker spenders. There are those politicians who will dig a deep debt giving promises of entitlements and there are politicians who will rob you blind as they promise to keep you safe from invaders.
But you know that. The biggest thing that Lucky doesn’t get is that the world isn’t white male protestant and rich. Of the 31 republicans voted to the House in 2018, 30 fit that description. Of the 53 democrats elected to the House, 34 are female and 20 are of another ethnic background (off-white?). 10 House races have to be recounted. Rashida Tlaib will be the first muslim woman in Congress. If Young Kim wins, she would be the first Korean-American woman in Congress.
Regardless of party, alt right self proclaimed conservatives act as if this is the decline of America. These people are bitter xenophobic old farts that refuse to understand that multiracial diversity has always been a benefit to America. Lucky, though young, is a homeschooled idiot who has been brainwashed into xenophobic action. Let’s hope Congress becomes more inclusive instead of following the Lucky Trumpist banner.
