Macworld reviews Parallels Desktop 14 for Mac: ‘Supercharged virtualization’

Parallels Desktop 14 for Mac is now available and is fully optimized for macOS Mojave,” J.R. Bookwalter writes for Macworld. “Version 14 focuses less on whiz-bang new features and instead wisely focuses on where it counts: Under-the-hood performance improvements.”

“You’ll notice the difference each and every time you launch the application, which is the fastest it’s ever been by as much as 80 percent,” Bookwalter writes. “On my Mac, the software launches in under five seconds flat.”

“Windows VMs now start up to 35 percent faster, as do applications that run inside them. The results are quite remarkable; as a longtime Parallels user, this is the closest to running Windows 10 on actual PC hardware I’ve ever seen,” Bookwalter writes. “Whether buying Parallels Desktop 14 for Mac for the first time or taking the annual upgrade plunge, I wouldn’t hesitate to install this version.”

  1. I’ve used it for years but I’m breaking my habit. Its just such a waste. I am trying to get off this VERY expensive upgrade train and going to bootcamp. Every year they want another $50 bucks while it eats up more and more of my precious SSD space and time trying to diagnose problems and install never ending patches to Windoze and Parallels. Damn you Excel and Visio! Don’t get on this train unless you MUST.

    1. @TominTulsa… How will your precious SSD space be better optimized using bootcamp? If you actually use Excel and Visio on a regular basis then dual booting would be an absolute nightmare! You don’t have to upgrade every year… I generally do every other year… If I really wanted to save even the upgrade money every other year, I would just use VirtualBox, from Oracle (formerly from Sun Microsystems).

      1. @johnapplec…you don’t lose any discounted rate only upgrading every other year? That may be the way to go. And not sure about Visio, but am I missing something where the macOS version of Excel isn’t sufficient?
