“It hasn’t been long since the launch of the iPad Pro and the early reviews are already indicating that the latest tablet from Apple could prove to be a performance beast in disguise,” Omar Sohail reports for wccftech. “Thanks to the new 7nm FinFET A12X Bionic chipset under the hood, different editing comparisons show that the iPad Pro is much faster than the 2018 MacBook Pro, as well as the other Windows 10-running machines”
“LaptopMag got their hands on the latest iPad Pro, and a Geekbench 4 run shows the 12.9-inch model got a multi-core score of 17,995, which is away above the 14,180 points that the Dell XPS 13 scored with its Core i7 processor, and also considerably more than the score of 13,025 that the Core i5-fueled Surface Pro 6 obtained,” Sohail reports.
“When it comes to video editing, Apple has hit it out of the park with its latest tablet. It took the iPad Pro just 7 minutes and 47 seconds to transcode a 4K clip to 1080p in the Adobe Rush appd,” Sohail reports. “The runner-up was none other than Apple’s own latest-generation 13-inch MacBook Pro, which got the job done in 25 minutes and 53 seconds. On the other hand, the Dell XPS 13 completed the task in 31 minutes and 3 seconds, while the Surface Pro 6 got done in 31 minutes and 54 seconds.”

Transcoding is not video editing. Transcoding is a step before or after the real work of the edit. How about real-time effects and playback on an editing timeline? Is there an iPad video editing program that comes close to the abilities of FCPX or Premier? The attached article and the the ultra-geeks commenting at that web site don’t seem to know that.
Can the iPad Pro run Final Cut Pro X and deal with files that are 10 GB Plus? Can it do that while 25 tabs are open in Safari, multiple windows overlapping one another, tons of background processes running, with full Photoshop and Illustrator running alongside?
So many of you have bought into Apple’s hype about the iPad Pro.
Do not confuse the fanbois with factual information that does not feed into the corporate PR line.
The results probably have more to do with optimization for the process than anything else.
Precisely my dear Watson. Transcoding video is a far cry from an actual powerful NLE on an iPad, multiple computing and previewing monitors larger than 12.9″ and RAID hooked up to carry the media. (Not to mention more multicores on a high end Intel machine.)
Move along most serious pros, nothing to see here for now.

All I would like on my iPadPro is the ability to off load camera files to a hard drive (a possibility now with the USB-C port) and perhaps create an FCPX importable XML to keyword the clips and make a rough edit on the spot. And by rough, I mean cuts and dissolves only primary storyline, no connected clips and possibly do VO’s over existing footage.
Sounds good I reckon. I don’t do video editing, but maybe this will work.
Adobe rush on the iPad is unable to export at anything higher then 1080p. thats NOT PRO. and that is also why its fast..
smoke and mirrors people. unless they put out an A12X mac that can outperform an actual i7 mac, then all these benchmarks are so so pointless.
So, is your point that there are some jobs where you should EXPECT that an iPad Pro would be faster than a Core i7?
Just ordered a size 11 iPad Pro. It should pair nicely with my iPhone Xs. Next up: wireless printer and wireless headphones.
iPads are useless for serious editing because you can’t connect hard drives to them, except through glacially slow wireless hacks. A two hour movie can have a terabyte of intermediate footage. (You can’t work directly from formats like AVCHD, you have to decompress them.)
