Yesterday, “Apple also rolled out an updated version of its Siri Shortcuts app. The app, first introduced at WWDC, arrived with iOS 12 as a way to unlock Siri’s potential by allowing users to create their own custom voice commands and workflows,” Sarah Perez reports for TechCrunch. “Now, it can do a few new things, too – including setting alarms and timers, getting the latest weather, and more.”
“The weather actions should be especially useful for those who have created custom morning routines with Siri Shortcuts, as you’ll now be able to use the latest weather in your shortcuts with the new ‘Get Current Weather’ and ‘Get Weather Forecast’ actions,” Perez reports. “With these options, you can now ask for current conditions, forecasts (hourly, daily or 10 days out), or for any specific condition – like the humidity, chance of rain, air quality, and more.”
“Also helpful are the new ‘Create Alarm,’ ‘Toggle Alarm,’ and ‘Start Timer’ actions,” Perez reports. “Siri Shortcuts version 2.1 is the first major update following the app’s release with iOS 12. However, the app today still largely appeals to iOS power users – those who were already comfortable using its predecessor, Workflow, and who understand how to build routines. More mainstream users are likely being exposed to Siri’s expanded powers through their favorite apps.”

What are Siri Shortcuts?

I just don’t get Siri Shortcuts. Why do I have to use a complicated app to check the weather or compose a message? I know, I know… Shortcuts isn’t “complicated.” Well, yes, it is for about 97% of Apple’s iOS users. Anybody having good luck with Shortcuts? Anybody using it often? Anybody find it easy and intuitive to use? By they way, I consider myself a serious Apple fan… person. But, I just don’t get/ use Shortcuts.

One might have hoped I guess that by this time Siri might be becoming bright enough to answer most of the questions herself without her users having to teach her individually. Some specialist complex stuff yes I can understand that and expanding on the mundane stuff adding doe ialistialist yes and as such it will be a fantastic tool but weather, alarms, really? Has she not yet got through kindergarten after all these years. So much for artificial intelligence and universal learning this is little different to factory robots being manually put though repetitive routines surely, only it’s the customers expected to do the manual work. Indeed you get the feeling rightly or wrongly, but expecially after the years of apparent neglect, that Apple can’t really be bothered to put in the resourses to expand Siri itself so are employing its customer base for free. Or am I seriously missing something here.
When I first heard the name Siri shortcuts, I expected to see Siri suggesting shortcuts using machine learning/A.I. on my use of Siri combined with geo-locations, regularly used apps etc.
I don’t want to have to create a series of commands for different situations.
I’d rather have Siri suggest Shortcuts to me instead by telling Siri that, for instance; “I’m going to work, play my music and launch the Maps app or Citymapper app.”
The next time I’m going to work I could either tell Siri “I’m going to work” and the shortcut would kick in or for Siri to know that it was that time of day again and when I walk out the door and at that time all those actions happen.
