“Apple Watch Series 4 isn’t just a nice looking watch. It also has invisible features that can prove life-saving,” Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac. “Series 4 only hit the market last month and the new Apple Watch fall detection feature is already being credited with coming to the rescue for at least one customer in a dire situation.”
“According to Swedish publication Aftonbladet, Apple Watch Series 4 was key in notifying emergency services for Gustavo Rodriguez when crippling back pain struck while he was cooking over a stove,” Hall reports. “The unexpected discomfort caused him to double over and collapse to the floor while the stove was fired up.”
Hall reports, “Apple Watch fall detection noticed the sudden collapse and offered to call local emergency services.”

Full article says that the man did not actually have Apple Watch place the call, but that moments later he used the Apple Watch to reach a relative.
Wrong! After the fall Siri asked him if she should call an ambulance (this part admittedly came out a bit ambiguous) and evidently he did because the ambulance arrived and administered pain killer and took him to the hospital. He also placed a call to a nearby relative to shut down the stove, otherwise some damage would occur. So he summarised that he wouldn’t know what would be the outcome had it not been for AW!
Using Google translate with the original news page: “Gustavo’s clock asked if he would call an emergency call. If he had not responded, the clock would have automatically called 112.”
Evidently the call to the ambulance was not triggered by the Apple Watch’s fall detection functionality, but the Apple Watch was still the means by which he was able to reach emergency help when he was immobilized by pain.
