Ming-Chi Kuo: Demand in China for Apple’s 6.1-inch iPhone Xr stronger than iPhone 8 cycle

“Ming-Chi Kuo has today released a report that is good news for Apple,” Benjamin Mayo reports for 9to5Mac. “The first week of October is a national holiday in China. Kuo is reporting that most domestic phone manufacturers saw sales fall year-over-year during Golden Week. Kuo blamed insufficient innovation, and believes that some proportion of consumers are leaning on older iPhone models or awaiting the upcoming iPhone XR launch on October 26.”

“Kuo says that he estimates iPhone XR replacement demand in China to be higher than last year’s cycle with the iPhone 8,” Mayo reports. “Overall, shipments from major Chinese brands fell 10% according to Kuo’s report.”

“Kuo expects iPhone XR to beat sales of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus over its lifetime,” Mayo reports.

iPhone XR comes in six new finishes: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED.

  1. I just received a new iPhone 7 for my birthday. This is the very first new iPhone that I have ever owned – the previous two were well-used hand-me-downs. The 7 replaces an iPhone 5s which was still serviceable, but showing signs that it was approaching EOL. The leap from the 5s to the 7 is remarkable in so many ways. It is so sleek and responsive that it is difficult for me to believe that the 7 is now three generations behind the iPhone state-of-the-art.

Why a 7 and not an 8 or Xr or Xs? Well, my wife and I both appreciate a good value, and the price of the 7 is very attractive relative to its benefits. That is the reason that I generally ride the second or third wave when it comes to consumer electronics. I will probably upgrade to a Xs or the next generation in four or five more years. In addition, I have three children in college right now and a fourth that will enter college next year, so it doesn’t make any sense for us to spend any more money on a smart phone than necessary.

Apple is wise to maintain the 7 and 8 as lower cost options in its current iPhone lineup. The company nabs additional customers at the lower end that it otherwise might have lost, and it also squeezes a bit more revenue and profit from the investment that it made in the 7. That is a win-win as far as I am concerned. I am very pleased with my iPhone 7.
