Apple’s iPhone XR, iPhone Xs, and iPhone Xs Max: What’s changed

“At Apple’s Gather Round event in Cupertino today, the company announced its iPhone XR, iPhone Xs, and iPhone Xs Max, successors to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X,” Emil Protalinski writes for VentureBeat. “Preorders for the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max begin September 21, and the devices will begin shipping September 28. Like with the iPhone X, you’ll have to wait longer for the iPhone Xr: until October 19 to preorder and until October 26 for it to ship.”

“If you’re trading in an iPhone 8 for an iPhone Xr, you’re paying more for a bigger phone, larger display, and heavier device, with better specs,” Protalinski writes. “The iPhone Xs isn’t much of an upgrade over the iPhone X. You’re getting a slightly more powerful phone, with one-hour worse battery life — thankfully you don’t have to pay more for it.”

As for the iPhone Xs Max, “if you want the best iPhone, as always, it will cost you,” Protalinski writes.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple must be having an internal competition to see who can come up with the worse product names that can still sell over 50 million units annually.

BTW, the A12 Bionic-powered iPhone Xs is more than just “slightly” faster than the A11 Bionic-powered iPhone X. It’s CPU is up to 15% faster, its GPU is up to 50% faster, and Core ML runs up to 9x faster.

  1. Apple should just come out and say we are abandoning our Mac lineup, cause its obvious they don’t care about it.

Or maybe they just downsize the lineup to just 3 computers. Mac Pro, iMac pro, and Mac mini

  2. The new phones are much faster as MDN notes. Hopefully Apple PR will send polite notes to reporters who get it wrong like the article writer (“You’re getting a slightly more powerful phone… ” ) to correct their misconceptions before the misleading info gets baked into public consciousness.

Apple PR has been really laggardly about these things in the past as seen in the China child labour fake news ( Mike Daisey who was featured on NPR etc admitted he made it all up) to antenna gate etc…

  3. I found the iPhone event to be somewhat underwhelming. Even though I’ve been waiting to update my current iPhone, at over $2000 Australian dollars I’m doubtful it represents good value to me.

  4. Add these ti mdn notes above.
