Fortnite isn’t coming to Apple TV, in latest tvOS gaming letdown

“Earlier today, a spelunking developer discovered code within Fortnite that seemingly hinted the hit-game was soon making its way to Apple TV,” Chance Miller writes for 9to5Mac. “Subsequently, Epic Games shot down those hopes, saying the code mention of tvOS is the result of ‘general Unreal Engine support.'”

Miller writes, “While Fortnite might not be coming to tvOS anytime soon, today’s excitement only underscores the potential of gaming on tvOS.”

“When Apple unveiled the tvOS-powered Apple TV in 2015, it touted gaming support as one of the key upgrades over previous Apple TV models,” Miller writes. “Since then, however, gaming has struggled to gain traction on tvOS and there have been no signs of improvement.”

  3. We always see clickbait articles about how Apple should buy this company or that one, and the one I always wondered why they did not grab is Nintendo or maybe some other gaming SW developer.

Mr Cook seems enamored of subscription services for revenue and casual gaming is a big business and cuts across many different age groups and other demographics. Buying up a gaming company with a stable full of titles and developers that could re-code them for the Apple TV, iOS and Mac would not be that big or difficult a thing. Apple could offer a huge gaming site that offered two options: ad supported for free or ad free for a fee.

I am not suggesting that Apple jump in the deep end of heavy duty gaming as that market is pretty ell established and covered, but casual gaming is a bigger market and a more diverse one. There are also lots of orphan games from arcade and older console days that could be brought up to modern graphics and coded for Apple’s HW/SW ecosystem fairly easily.
