Apple-supplier Sharp’s first-quarter operating profit soars 45 percent

“Sharp Corp reported on Tuesday a 45 percent rise in first-quarter operating profit, beating analysts’ estimates on soaring profit at its core display business and strong sales of camera modules and sensors,” Thomas Wilson reports for Reuters.

“The Osaka-based company, a supplier to Apple Inc (AAPL.O), said its operating profit was 24.8 billion yen ($223 million) for the April-June period, compared with 17.11 billion yen a year earlier,” Wilson reports. “Seven analysts on average expected operating profit of 18.8 billion yen, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S data.”

“The performance cemented Sharp’s recovery under the ownership of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (Foxconn),” Wilson reports. “Still, investors have remained wary about long-term prospects for Sharp, which is finding the going tough against Asian rivals. Sharp and Japan Display Inc have struggled to respond to smartphone makers’ shift to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens, letting South Korean rivals Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Display take the lead.”

  1. It be fantastic if Japanese companies like Sharp can supply not only OLED screens but other components that Apple needs so badly. In fact more Japanese high tech companies should buck up and share the Apple pie instead of surrendering to Samsung a big bulk of that Apple business. Cmon Japan, you can do it

  2. It’s still likely Samsung can do a better job because that company is flush with cash and loves to spend on R&D to break other companies. Some companies just love to dominate in everything and that’s what makes Amazon so powerful. Anyway, Apple would have to invest heavily into Japanese companies and there’s no guarantee they can do as good a job as Samsung can in any component market.

    1. you are most likely correct, which is a shame as Japan high tech companies should not surrender the Apple profits that Samsung is gleefully raking into their coffers. Companies like Sony and other should buck up and take some of the Apple pie from Samsung.
