Anti-iPhone X ads show why South Korean dishwasher maker Samsung keeps losing to Apple

“Samsung [has debuted] three new ads designed not to promote its own products, but to tarnish the image of a competing product,” Rado Slavov writes for phoneArena. “A classic case of a company in a losing position, frustrated by unsatisfactory results, and desperate to ‘make something happen.'”

“The three new ads join the others in Samsung’s ‘Ingenius’ series, which has almost nothing to do with the Galaxy S9, and everything to do with just how bad Apple’s latest iPhones are,” Slavov writes. “Right off the bat, you know Samsung isn’t going to build a very strong case.”

“One of the new ads, called ‘Storage,’ shows a female customer struggling to find the ‘microSD slot’ on a new iPhone. Apparently, she also doesn’t wish to keep any of her content in the cloud, or to stream her video and audio; she happens to need more than 64, 128 or 256 GB of native storage to keep stuff right there ON THE PHONE. Most computers nowadays ship with around 256 GB SSD storage,” Slavov writes. “[In another ad] we have a customer who wants to find how multiwindow (the one where you have two apps opened side by side) multitasking works on the iPhone X because her sister has been doing that on her Galaxy S9… If this young woman had actually used side-by-side multitasking on a phone, maybe she would have known what a crappy experience it is.”

  1. A few years ago I was asked to sub for a friend working on a big, week long corporate event at Radio City Music Hall. It was just for a day during a rehersal for the main event which was live-streamed at the end of the week. I had no idea what it was for except that I was to sign a non-disclosure form upon arrival. When I got there, I was told I wasn’t needed as they decided that morning, before 7am, to fill my position with somebody else (they actually replaced my friend as well but they failed to tell him that also, I had to). So I never was asked to sign the ND form but it took about two hours to tell me I was fired so I got to see the rehearsal, it was to introduce one of Samsung’s Galaxy phones. So I almost worked for Samsung for a day. Many of the other production people I knew from other jobs.

This was an extraordinary production with multi-level platforms for dancers and a Ferrari sports car on a platform that spun onto it’s side with actors strapped in so they wouldn’t fall out. It seemed sort of stupid but many corporate events do these things in a tongue in cheek way so what did I know?

At the end of the week the big event happened, my friends did hard work and that was that. I didn’t follow up on the event since I wasn’t involved. Weeks later I started to hear from a couple of my friends. Samsung refused to pay them for any of the work! What happened was after the live event wrapped and breakdown was happening, somebody in power (who knows who) sent a refreshment cart around the theater for the production staff. The cart had sodas, tea, coffee and… beer. A few of the production people chose the beer and were happily drinking it while dismantling the equipment. Suddenly Samsung executives (all Korean) came storming thru the theater and angrily fired everyone drinking beer on the spot! Then refused to pay them for any of their long days of work! One person I know who had an ice tea got paid. The others tried to sue but since each person was an independent contractor they had to sue a third party first before they could get to Samsung directly. The amounts were too small to hire a lawyer and the Samsung execs knew it.

Why the long story? Samsung is a defective corporation with a screwed up culture. Why do this to freelancers? For every good to great product they create, they seem compelled to screw it up in some way. Their TVs are still excellent if you ignore the terrible software programming they saddle them with. So somebody in Samsung knows how to engineer great displays but their work is overshadowed by management hubris.

  2. They should do an ad showing off the Dolby Atmos support in S9, which the iPhone will likely never have.

    1. There are also perfectly valid reasons for wanting removable storage in addition to user-upgradeable storage.

There are also valid reasons to develop models without either.

What is curious is to refuse to serve an easily addressable market for swapping out either storage and/or batteries. Which make any considerations purely those of manufacturer convenience rather than the customers’.

      Dumb commercial too,
