“Despite what turned out to be disappointing sales of Apple’s newer iPhones this year, the company is ramping up production of the next models like never before, according to analysts John Donovan and Steve Mullane with the boutique research firm BlueFin Research Partners,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s. “‘Despite angst surrounding the 2018 September releases, one common thread we continually uncover is the lack of concern for overall demand for 2018-2019,’ write the analysts. ‘In fact, we continue to see potentially larger 2019 builds (not vetted) due to the lack of upgrade activity over the past few years resulting in a pent-up demand for the new devices.'”
“Without citing sources, the duo write that Apple is planning for 91 million units to be built, combined, of three new models of iPhone in the latter two calendar quarters of this year, to be followed by another 92 million units in the first two quarters of next year. The iPhone X would presumably be discontinued in Q3 of this year, and the cheaper ‘iPhone SE’ would also go away,” Ray reports. “That 92 million units in the first two quarters of next year is ‘far larger than normal cycles,’ they write.”

Why do all these so-called experts think that demand for the SE is driven by price? It seems obvious to me that most SE users chose it because it is small enough for one-handed operation. A big cheap phone is not a replacement, and a huge phone is even less of one.
I don’t care about one handed operation. I love my SE because it fits so easily into my pockets. I like how small it is. I normally use two hands when using it.
MDN is exactly right about fixing the iPhone naming convention that has been totally screwed up and confusing for years. I have an iPhone SE, LOVE IT, bought on day one March 31, 2016. If God forbid Apple discontinued the SE this year — I would look into selling my current model and buy the latest SE model. So it would be extremely helpful to both buyers and sellers to know the exact date of release and eliminate PITA research. For example: iPhone SE 2016 (first quarter). iPhone SE 2018 (third quarter). The reason I bought the iPhoneX was the the small footprint. I miss the home button, and the power button on the top. I also miss the headphone jack. But then, I try to do professional work on my iPhone.
I really hope that this rumor about the iPhone SE is dead wrong, I love the size of my SE and will buy a new version of the same phone if Apple discontinues it.
My wife was the last to get an iPhone because they were not comfortable in her hand. When the SE came out she finally agreed to get one. There was also a very good deal on SE’s at ATT that we were able to use to swap out the land line at home – and save $40+ a month. Not everyone wants a semi-tablet up against their ear.
I want a 4″ phone, no matter what it is called or price. Samsung really fooled pipeline Tim to THINK everyone on earth wants a huge phone. Most of my friends and I do NOT want huge phones. Keep the 4″ and offer it with as a site with new phones, or continue to be unfocused and lazy and make a SE2… many are waiting for a 4″

That would rock. Maybe some lower-end features, but not terrible. Example: not a lame camera. Maybe a lack of 3D Touch?

A home button is not outdated.
A physical button might look pretty good if the screen goes unresponsive.
As long as we don’t get an iPhone Deluxe or its really going to sound like 1970s cars.
