Apple CEO Tim Cook tweets condolences for victims of mass murder at Capital Gazette newspaper

“A gunman blasted his way into the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland with a shotgun Thursday afternoon, killing five people, authorities said,” Kevin Rector and Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs report for The Baltimore Sun. “The victims were identified as Rob Hiaasen, 59, a former feature writer for The Baltimore Sun who joined the Capital Gazette in 2010 as an assistant editor and columnist; Wendi Winters, 65, a community correspondent who headed special publications; Gerald Fischman, 61, the editorial page editor; John McNamara, 56, a staff writer who had covered high school, college and professional sports for decades; and Rebecca Smith, 34, a sales assistant hired in November. Two others were injured in the attack that began about 2:40 p.m. at the Capital Gazette offices at 888 Bestgate Road in Annapolis.”

“Police took a suspect into custody soon after the shootings. He was identified as Jarrod W. Ramos, a 38-year-old Laurel man with a long-standing grudge against the paper,” Rector and Bogel-Burroughs report. “Ramos was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, according to online court records.”

“‘This was a targeted attack on the Capital Gazette,’ said Anne Arundel County Deputy Police Chief William Krampf,” Rector and Bogel-Burroughs report. “Ramos’ dispute with the Capital Gazette began in July 2011 when a columnist wrote about a criminal harassment case against him. He brought a defamation suit against the columnist and the organization’s editor and publisher. A court ruled in the Capital Gazette’s favor, and an appeals court upheld the ruling. Neither the columnist, Eric Hartley, nor the editor and publisher, Thomas Marquardt, are still employed by the Capital Gazette. They were not present during the shootings.”

U.S. President Trump wrote via Twitter, “Prior to departing Wisconsin, I was briefed on the shooting at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all of the First Responders who are currently on the scene.”

U.S. First Lady Melania Trump wrote via Twitter, “Today’s violence at the Capital Gazette was tragic & evil. My heart goes out to all affected in this brutal & senseless attack, & I send thoughts & prayers for comfort to the friends, family & colleagues of those killed & injured.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted his support via Twitter, writing, “Our democracy relies on the dedicated work of the free press. Today our hearts are with everyone at @capgaznews, the Annapolis community and journalists everywhere.”

  1. Ban all shotguns!

(Just pointing out the usual illogic of the gun-grabbers. It’s not the tools, it’s the nut jobs wielding them, be they rental trucks, hammers, axes, guns, knives, etc.)

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the victims and their loved ones.

    1. If it’s not the tools, why does America have such a massively disproportionate number of nut jobs then? No other country has this many crazy people killing each other with guns. What is wrong with Americans? Why as a country is much more not being done to increase mental health care if there are so many people who need it?

      1. The problem is the left just cannot get over Trump. And the media Is goading on these people by advocating violence as a solution. In the current state of affairs, it has become necessary for me to pack my Glock everywhere now. Thanks to wacko left Democats.

        1. Your disdain will not affect the progress out country has made in the past 18 months.

          Get used to it…

(and no, I don’t care for a snarky list of you views on what’s happened)

        2. It willbe interesting how you spin it when Trumps stupid trade wars hit your own pocketbook

Trump promised previous victims of mass shootings that he would work with his fellow gop congress to make some meaningful steps to keep guns out of the hands of people with psychological problems. This shooter obviously was violent and deranged, but you insist theres no way to keep him from having a gun. Past crimes to you are no reason to deny assholes like this a deadly weapon. Wow. Might as well defund police forces now— you don’t believe in crime prevention at all. You are happy with the rates of shootings because you have no human empathy. Typical Trumpt dittohead. It’s all about you, never a care about anyone else.

        3. Wow. You know a LOT about nothing yet great at projecting.

Just hold that thought six more months (if you can even hold it 6 seconds….) and get back to Mr. ChickenShitAnonymous.

    1. I bet, snoop, you’re not a conservative. I say that because it’s the left Most often claims to be the peacemaker, but ironically uses violence most often. Black lives matter, Occupy Wall Street, Maxine Waters, Madonna, Resist, The Weatherman ( historical, but one time member still is unashamed and wishes he had done more). It goes on and on.

Sure, there are nuts on the right, but without question, there’s a good chunk on the left that deem of violence sometimes necessary and often appropriate.

By the way, your statement is foolish.

  2. Who exactly is Tim Cook presuming to speak for here?

I have no issue with the substance of his tweet. But his message comes across as patronizing.

I, for one, am not looking to Apple’s CEO to provide a sociopolitical perspective on this heart-wrenching event. Nor do I have any use for his vicarious expression of condolence concerning a tragic loss of life in my own community.

    1. Dude, the teeets are not about your newspaper, they are about social justice and gun control.

Having worked 20 years for a media company with several small town newspapers (with one fairly large and well respected newspaper) these people seemed much like the folks I saw daily.

Terrible tragedy that should be left at that, a tragedy.

  3. The usual boilerplate tweets, “sending thoughts and prayers to the victims” A pretty pointless and useless gesture. Why not show you really care by doing something about the problem.

    1. The usa, an empire in obvious decline, is paralyzed by fear and distrust. But its useless leaders think tweets are going to solve problems. Then the superficial talk is drowned by mean spirited political assholes who make everything into an excuse to divide/label/attack with predictable propaganda. Who would have ever belived that the usa could become great by making enemies with 90% of the rest of the world and 50% of a dramatic polarized electorate? Great empires fall when internal groups spend all their energy infighting instead of solving problems. This incident and the radical diatribes here prove how quick the usa can pull itself apart.
