New data from Juniper Research estimates the global number of mobile contactless users will exceed 760 million by 2020, up from an estimated 440 million in 2018. It forecasts OEM Pay services, including Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay, will reach 450 million by 2020, with Apple accounting for over 50% of OEM Pay users globally.
Leading OEM Pay Wallets
According to the new research, Contactless Payments: Payment Cards, OEM Pay & Mobile Wallets 2018-2023, the combined market share of Apple, Samsung and Google will reach 60% of global mobile contactless users by 2023, up from an estimated 50% in 2018. Other OEM Pay users, including the likes of Huawei Pay, Xiaomi Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay, will exceed 20 million by 2020. Meanwhile, well over 200 banks had deployed HCE-wallet services in 2017, expected to drive future growth in many markets.
Contactless Payment Transactions to Exceed $1 Trillion in 2018
While contactless payments use has risen rapidly, this does not mean higher growth for mobile contactless payments. In many established markets, contactless cards remain the most likely to have increased current and future usage by consumers, and OEM Pay options may struggle to gain traction amongst existing users in such markets.
However, the research found that contactless payment transactions, conducted across all types of payment cards, mobile and wearable devices, will reach $1 trillion in value this year, a year earlier than previously anticipated by Juniper Research. “With contactless payments becoming the norm in many global markets, the attendant payment infrastructure is also becoming well established. Indeed, in markets such as Europe, contactless payments are becoming the preferred method of in-store payments”, added research author Nitin Bhas.
On a global level, contactless card payments are strongest in Far East & China and Europe accounting for 78% of global transaction volume in 2018.
MacDailyNews Take: Dominance.

I have yet to start using Apple Pay regularly since it first became available. There were so many problems then using it I just stopped. Especially if vendors were still asking for pin codes. I may have to revisit.
Not fair. Apple users are more educated, more aware and more stable regarding platforms they say!!!
You should. Anyplace you see the contactless payment logo, Apple Pay will work. They may ask you to sign, but that’s all, and that’s up to the payment network, not the merchant.
I just came back from Ottawa and it seemed as though every where I went Apple Pay was accepted. Even in the sidewalk Kiosks that sell tour bus tickets. Far better than what I find where I live in NJ.
Dominant, for now. Just wait, Apple Pay will be the next neglected product.

It would be interesting to know if there is a correlation between TouchID vs FaceID in the use of ApplePay. Are users more likely to use ApplePay on one interface over the other?
I hate using my phone for con tactless, i prefer using my Natwest Bank debit card for that, much easier and safer. With the phone, the worry of dropping it is too much hassle. I do love apple pay when i use it on apps to buy train/plane tickets, pay for my hotel on booking.com, it is marvellous. It means with Apple pay i dont have to enter or save by card details for every different services/ apps. I have used apple pay for purchases on the following apps, and it was a Breeze
British Airways,
Alitalia,
booking.com
trainline uk
trainline eu
some others which i cannot remember.
Anytime you use a card instead of Apple Pay, it is not safer. People can see the card numbers when holding it and using it out in the open.
