“Dunwoody [Georgia] police said burglars took a page out of the movie ‘Mission Impossible’ when they stole more than $100k worth of Apple products from a Best Buy Store,” Mike Petchenik reports for WSB-TV Atlanta.
“Police said the thieves rappelled through a hole in the ceiling at the store on Hammond Drive,” Petchenik reports. “Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik was at the scene where Sgt. Robert Parsons compared the crime to a movie heist… “It’s a ‘Mission Impossible’ style burglary,” Sgt. Robert Parsons told Petchenik.”
Petchenik reports, “Parsons said once inside, the burglars burrowed into a storage room and stole thousands in iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and more.”

There is a quirk of geography right there. The Best Buy is near a huge mall, adjacent to a main road, just north of the Atlanta Perimeter. However between the Perimeter and the Best Buy is an office building that is shielded by trees from the Perimeter, the road, and trees between it and the Best Buy. On the fourth side is the Marta Rail line which provides a barrier. The access to the office building is under the Marta Rail line. They probably used the office building parking lot as a staging area while posting a look-out at the rail line. From the parking lot, go through the trees, scale the back side of the Best Buy and through the roof and you’re in. It probably took them 30 minutes to an hour, in darkness, all alone, shielded by the trees, and no worries. On escape, if you go south across the perimeter from the office building you’ll quickly be in a location the police wouldn’t first look.
Why, you might ask, do I know this? I had to go to that office building one time and I missed it. I needed Maps satellite view to find the building behind the Marta overpass. When there, you hear the Perimeter traffic and the traffic on Ashford-Dunwoody Rd but you can’t see them and they can’t see you. No one will hear what you are doing.
Genius, pure genius. Lock ’em up so they have time to think about how smart they are. 🙂
Despite the interesting way they got in to steal quite a haul, all it shows is that some or all Best Buy stores needs more security, sensors, cameras, motion sensors, to actual detect an intrusion, it does sound sound like they were impeded at all by any security measures.
Always a letter or word missing or extra word…. does NOT sound like they were impeded by any reasonable security measures..
How do you rappel through a ceiling?
Based on what I have read about in San Fran and bike thefts, cordless drill, cordless sawzall and spare batteries.
As to the noise, ignored.
Only the Macs will be usable. None of the iPhones or iPads will work, right? No legit Apple ID?
Samsung wishes that some thief would steal Samsung phones to get desperately needed publicity such as Apple thefts get.
