Apple intends to beat Netflix on price with standalone subscription to original content

“We still don’t know what Apple’s TV plans are, but we do know Apple wants us to know it is serious about its TV plans,” Peter Kafka writes for Recode. “Latest example: Apple says it has a ‘unique, multi-year content partnership’ with Oprah Winfrey, who will ‘create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world.'”

“Apple’s Winfrey announcement follows similar announcements about video projects involving Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steven Spielberg and other well-known creators and brands, all engineered by Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, the former Sony executives Apple hired to reboot its original content plans last year,” Kafka writes. “But Apple still hasn’t told the world — or most people in Hollywood, including some of the ones it is making deals with — what it plans to do with all the stuff it is making.”

Kafka writes, “One TV executive who has talked to Apple tells me Apple says it intends to sell a standalone subscription to its original video shows, priced below Netflix, whose standard offering costs $11 a month in the U.S.”

  1. Except that Apple has zip as far as an attractive library to offer. Unless they start buying up libraries of films and TV shows. Cheaper than Netflix with a handful of shows stll ain’t going to cut it.

    1. Exactly, Apple needs way more than a couple new shows, you need at least one of the following:
      1. a stock library of old shows and movies to compete against Amazon and Netflix.
      2. an amazing offering of live sports
      3. Something unique, like a library of classic movies, which are woefully underrepresented on Netflix streaming, for example.
      4. A great variety of live/recorded music concerts–classical, opera, pop, rock, jazz, rap–again, woefully missing on other streaming sights.

  2. If the plan is to market their original content without offering other shows that they have in iTunes that they sell and rent, they need to start off with a large library of content for a price less then the others otherwise its worthless

Original content is nice, but your not going to please everyone with a smattering of original shows, some may get royally panned and no one will watch or subscribe….

  3. This content should be included with Apple Music subscription until is it well enough established to justify a standalone service.

It will take a great deal of QUALITY content to make me add yet another subscription video service to my list.

  4. I doubt Apple has said anything in regards to pricing. I think Apple needs a lot more than just original programs to pull in subscribers for a competitive video-streaming service.
