“Since it’s been several days without an iPhone rumor, DigiTimes has piped up with what purports to be a salacious scoop about next year’s iPhone,” Michael Simon writes for Macworld. “According to the site, Apple ‘will likely have its 2019 series of iPhones come with USB Type-C support,’ replacing the nearly six-year-old Lightning port.”
“In that time between Lightning’s arrival in 2012 and the upcoming 2018 iPhones, USB-C has risen to a position of prominence on many of Apple’s products,” Simon writes. “It’s a mainstay on Apple’s MacBook, MacBook Pro, and iMac computers, and nearly every Android phone maker has adopted the symmetrical port as the charging solution on its handsets.”
“But this isn’t the first time this rumor has circulated and it’s no more credible now than it was then,” Simon writes. “Last year, The Wall Street Journal reported that the as-yet-unnamed iPhone X would use a “USB-C port for the power cord and other peripheral devices instead of the company’s original Lightning connector.” That turned out to be false…”

I don’t want to see wireless-only connections until I can do an iTunes backup at current speeds or very close. While iCloud backup is really incredible and is a great solution for 99 percent of people out there, I like to keep my data more private than that and do encrypted iTunes backups on an encrypted drive. If you want my data, you’re going to have come and get it. I just don’t want the tradeoff to be slow as hell restores because that’s another area where local backups destroys iCloud. Even those of us who do iCloud backups ought to do iTunes from time to time, especially when moving on to an upgrade.
I would much prefer if future iPhones went to the USB-C standard, if only so that I didn’t have to carry multiple wall warts.
Who said you need multiple wall warts? I mean, you can get wall warts with 4 or even 6 USB ports.
No, what you really want is to not have to carry around multiple USB cables of different types.
Me, I carry MicroUSB, lightning and USB for all the devices I have. It’s a pain, I’d rather just the ONE type of cable. I’d still need several of them but at least they’d all be the SAME.

You’re right. Apple could have integrated a USB-C adapter cleanly into its iOS cables and migrated all its wall chargers to USB-C two years ago. Then MacBook owners could actually plug their phones into their laptops without buying another cable.
Unfortunately, all Apple seems to want to do for accessories is force the user to collect all the white plastic dongles in the collection.
