Facebook confirms sharing users’ personal data with Chinese companies

“Facebook Inc said Tuesday it has data sharing partnerships with at least four Chinese companies including Huawei, the world’s third largest smartphone maker, which has come under scrutiny from U.S. intelligence agencies on security concerns,” David Shepardson reports for Reuters.

“The social media company said Huawei, computer maker Lenovo Group, and smartphone makers OPPO and TCL Corp were among about 60 companies worldwide that received access to some user data after they signed contracts to re-create Facebook-like experiences for their users,” Shepardson reports. “More than half of the partnerships have already been wound down, Facebook said. It said on Tuesday it would end the Huawei agreement later this week. It is ending the other three partnerships with Chinese firms as well.”

“Senator Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee, who asked Facebook if Huawei was among the companies that received user data, said in a statement that the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee had raised concerns about Huawei dating back in 2012,” Shepardson reports. “‘The news that Facebook provided privileged access to Facebook’s API to Chinese device makers like Huawei and TCL raises legitimate concerns, and I look forward to learning more about how Facebook ensured that information about their users was not sent to Chinese servers,’ Warner said.”

MacDailyNews Take: Facebook is a garbage company.

As we’ve written previously, “If you trust Mark Zuckerberg to be the keeper of your photos, contacts, political views, religious beliefs, etc., you’re batshit insane.”

Instant messages sent by Mark Zuckerberg during Facebook’s early days, reported by Business Insider, May 13, 2010:

Zuckerberg: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuckerberg: Just ask
Zuckerberg: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend’s Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?
Zuckerberg: People just submitted it.
Zuckerberg: I don’t know why.
Zuckerberg: They “trust me”
Zuckerberg: Dumb fucks

We use FaceBook as an RSS feed. Our CMS automatically reposts our article headlines and links them back to our website. That is our only interaction with Facebook and has been our only interaction with Facebook for years. We deleted our personal accounts [which we opened only so we could understand the Facebook phenomenon] many years ago.

If you want to share photos and videos with friends, text them using Apple’s end-to-end encrypted iMessage service. You need to control your social networking, not cede it to a gatekeeper like Facebook. – MacDailyNews, March 19, 2018

  1. I really want Zuck to go to jail. I don’t know why I feel this way, but it just seems like he’s a very evil person. Not in just a business sense, like Gates who is now doing very good things for the world, but like a genuinely evil person who wants to psychologically manipulate people and steal their soul. Just plain creepy.

      1. John, I know what you did last summer. I was Peeping Tomming on you, and what you peeped on was… alarming.

But you trusted me… you know what I think about people who trust me!

  2. Is FB winding down its sharing with Chinese firms only after it was caught? If so, it’s like any alleged criminal in congress who returns the pay-to-play donation only after media exposes the corruption and then the legislator says something like, “I returned the money so I did no wrong”. Right. In the meantime both FB and the legislator refuse to fess up to the rest of the sharing and corruption on which they were not called out on.

  3. Whatever it is, if Facebook can sell it, it will be sold.

But here is the problem. I need to be on it for business reasons and so do two of the companies whose pages I manage.

And that will be the contradiction (a very nasty one) until there is an alternative, ……………and how do we know the alternative will be different? I dont have the answer.

  4. Give me a break on the Zuckerberg rants.

“…Apple is selling out. It’s not about the latest version of the iPhone, but the huge cache of personal data that will be going directly to the largest, and one of the harshest, authoritarian regimes in the world: the Communist government of China.

Given the Chinese government’s continuing crackdown on human rights and freedom of speech under President Xi Jinping, as well as its deepening reach into Western democracies, Apple’s policies in China have far-reaching implications for us all…”

  5. Only morons wouldn’t know exactly what China: Criminal Nation wants with Facebook data. Consider me

D I S G U S T E D with Facebook and their management. Total SELLOUTS to totalitarianism. For Mark Zukerberg, with his Jewish heritage, to pull these fascist quality moves is sickening. He’s just another crap-capitalist after all, (versus Quality Capitalist).

Chew your money well Mark, before you swallow and choke on it.
