“Explosives have been found at the Texas high school where a gunman killed at least eight people Friday morning, according to officials,” Ruth Brown reports for The New York Post. “‘There have been explosive items found in the high school and outside the high school,’ Santa Fe Independent School District Police Chief Walter Braun said at a press conference. ‘Because of this, everyone should be on the lookout for suspicious items and anything that looks out of place.'”
“The death toll could be as high as 10, and the majority of the victims are likely students, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a press conference,” Brown reports. “One suspect is in custody, and a second ‘possible person of interest’ is being detained and questioned, he said. The shooting happened between 7:30 and 8 a.m.”
“At least 12 others were injured, including one law enforcement officer, according to the Houston Chronicle,” Brown reports. “One student told TV station KTRK that a gunman came into her first-period art class and started shooting.”

After 22 school shootings so far this year, Mr. Cook may just have been varying the formula. At least he was expressing concern for the victims, which seems to me to be more appropriate than attacking an expression of concern. Something else may also be at play. I understand that empathy is a disappearing virtue, but try this on for size:

And the article you cited does not disagree that 22 school shootings had occurred, according to the CNN definition of an incident involving the discharge of a weapon at a school that involved at least one person (other than the shooter) being injured. They just disagree with that definition. Somebody needs to tell the other victims that dailywire.com doesn’t think that their deaths or injuries matter.

As long as people keep denying that the magnitude of the homicide problem (and more generally the problem of gun violence) in America is enormously greater than in any other developed nation, we will be unable to identify what it is about our society that is allowing so many deaths to occur without any governmental effort to stop it. There is no point in talking about what to do until we agree that we should do something.

Gawd was never taken out of schools because he/she/it/they never was in it- at least legally.
The ban on prayer in schools only applies to the paid staff- students are still free to assemble in student clubs for prayer and bible study. The lawsuit that brought about the ban was enforcing well established law as the Illinois School in question was not only compelling students to religious observance- they were actively allowing proselytizing.
Students are also free to pray silently as they wish. Further, schools are allowed to teach religious texts as literature, in the context of history and also for comparative religion. The ban is in the best traditions of the founders who did not trust state religion, so they did not want any advancement of a particular faith in the public arena.

Actually, religious talk was not only completely legal, it was part of the accepted curriculum.
It wasn’t until the intention of the Constitution was bastardized and mixed with a misinterpretation of Jefferson’s address to the Danbury Baptist that a plan to take religion OUT of the schools was successful.
Should students be forced to pray before school and study the Bible? No. Should coaches and teams or even events like games be allowed to have a prayer before a game when the VAST majority of those attending believe in this? Yes, and this can vary from district to district.
It’s not the “Separation of Church and State” (which was intended to keep government out of religion, NOT religion out of government) that has Christians, Jews, Muslim and Hindus arguing with each other over who’s influence is better (since the first three teach the life of Christ and the fourth accepts his existence) but rather have them arguing TOGETHER for increased moral teaching in school instead of this God is Dead attitude that offers no form of guidance to the adolescent.
Yes, I know this period of life is about rebellion, and I hated Psalms 100 that we said every morning in elementary, and I was angry at teachers who told me certain things were not God’s idea of good. Did any of that teaching hurt me? NO, matter of fact as I got older and went to larger schools I was angered at the “progressive” teachers that never missed a chance to insert their point of view negatively (but not necessarily correctly) about a time in our country’s history or any mention of a religious event. To me this was them using their position to undermine kids and young adults which did MUCH more harm than any small prayer that only taught us to be thankful for our mere existence. No, what many teachers soon began to spew was their anger and hatred of ANYTHING that resembled traditional values as systemically bad, and the older I got the worse they were until I absolutely despised two of my college “professors” because they spent so much damn time drumming hate into our heads and by GORE you re were NOT allowed to disagree because they weren’t their to enlighten us, they were bitter burned out failed professionals who had to lower themselves to teach because the real world kicked their asses and they resented it.
Oddly enough I had one college professor who was confined to a wheelchair, was prone to occasional spasms, and only had use of his left arm to guide electric his wheelchair, yet he could speak of ancient history so elegantly and factually for hours and days and not bore a student in the room. Did he teach about religion? Oh most certainly because without it he would not be teaching history. Did he slant towards any one particular? No, matter of fact he was an Atheist, and a few students didn’t like his portrayal of some parts of history, but he was very patient and professional and had no issue speaking matter of factually about the events. He had no desire to teach against religion, only how they were formed and their affects on civilizations and also those occurrences that affected the development of the religion itself. He taught the good and the bad of different sects and this helped to inform many who were of all creed to better see the what and why their belief systems were formed. This type of study should be mandatory between ages 12-15 because if done correctly people can understand religion without having to be “indoctrinated” and at the same time let many question their own beliefs rather than just accept them, but no it won’t be allowed because one in a thousand students might actually decide to accept a religion their parents are against and this can’t be allowed!!!
So let everyone carry on about school violence and its root cause, blame the NRA, blame assault rifles (although a 30/06 deer rifle could as much damage and apparently so can a shotgun, also pistols are much easier to hide), blame religion like Sean did (and failed to back up his claim), blame Republicans for any reason to make them feel better, blame TV, video games, movies and music, but what it all boils down to is not only are the ones committing the crimes so misguided, but in many ways so are many of the victims or at least the ones who push them to the brink of insanity when THEY act in ways that are hateful to a fellow student just to make themselves feel more superior. There is a void in many kids life and our resources to help them are crippled by the same selfishness that keeps a Manger scene off of a courthouse square. If you think it is worth this price to keep kids from understanding morality, then you have to accept the consequences. And remember, like I have said a dozen times here, you don’t need to believe in God to belong to a religion, and you don’t have to belong to a religion to believe in God and that also religion is part of our evolution, so anyone who truly thinks they know and understand human behavior will accept this whether they believe in a god or not.

Equating assault rifles to a deer rifle is not exactly a good one. While both are capable of firing a lot of rounds quickly, but the behavior of the round is very different.
I have worked in the Medical field for over 30 years including in the US Army Medical Corps. If you could see x-rays, CT scans of photos comparing the wounds, you would see that they are quite different.
The rounds from an M-16 type weapon does not make the relatively clean wound of a hunting rifle- it devastates the tissues. The wounds from an assault type rifle are far more likely to permanently maim or kill than a hunting rifle.

Not true. Good to read you experienced one side of the equation under trying circumstances. As for the other, hunting rifles are far more explosive and do more tissue damage. They are calibered and bullets designed to do just that. I don’t think an AR-15 can’t make much of a dent in the hide of a rhino or an elephant (human skin is like putty by comparison). With the proper hunting rifle, one well placed shot is all that is required.
