Apple CEO Tim Cook: ‘Our hearts go out to the families and victims’ of Texas high school attack

“Explosives have been found at the Texas high school where a gunman killed at least eight people Friday morning, according to officials,” Ruth Brown reports for The New York Post. “‘There have been explosive items found in the high school and outside the high school,’ Santa Fe Independent School District Police Chief Walter Braun said at a press conference. ‘Because of this, everyone should be on the lookout for suspicious items and anything that looks out of place.'”

“The death toll could be as high as 10, and the majority of the victims are likely students, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a press conference,” Brown reports. “One suspect is in custody, and a second ‘possible person of interest’ is being detained and questioned, he said. The shooting happened between 7:30 and 8 a.m.”

“At least 12 others were injured, including one law enforcement officer, according to the Houston Chronicle,” Brown reports. “One student told TV station KTRK that a gunman came into her first-period art class and started shooting.”

President Trump and Vice President Pence addressed the tragedy:

We grieve for the terrible loss of life, and send our support and love to everyone affected by this horrible attack in Texas. To the students, families, teachers and personnel at Santa Fe High School: Hi, we are with you in this tragic hour, and we will be with you forever. My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and do everything we can to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others. Everyone must work together at every level of government to keep our children safe. May God heal the injured and my God comfort the wounded and may God be with the victims and with the victims’ families.U.S. President Trump

To the students, families, teachers of Santa Fe High School, all of those affected and the entire community: We are with you, you are in our prayers, and you’re in the prayers of the American people.U.S. Vice President Pence

Apple CEO Tim Cook also tweeted condolences on behalf of himself and Apple employees:

We are devastated by today’s tragic news from Texas. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and everyone in the Santa Fe High School community.Apple CEO Tim Cook, May 18, 2018

      1. Totally, agree. Our “hearts” go out to you, not thoughts and prayers. The absolute laziest and worst response of the bunch! What, afraid to say “prayers” for fear of the Libtard mob as a HOSTAGE of Political Correctness? Afraid to offend your SJWS and peeps, as well. Well, I’m offended by a POOR response …

        1. After 22 school shootings so far this year, Mr. Cook may just have been varying the formula. At least he was expressing concern for the victims, which seems to me to be more appropriate than attacking an expression of concern. Something else may also be at play. I understand that empathy is a disappearing virtue, but try this on for size:

The CEO of the company you work for issues a statement on behalf of the company: “In obedience to the word of Allah delivered through The Prophet (peace be upon him), I want to assure the victims that all of us will be offering prayers on their behalf at the mosque during Friday prayers today and thinking of them throughout our Ramadan fast.”

Why would your reaction be any different from that of an atheist, agnostic, or deist working for Apple if Tim Cook had suggested that the entire Apple community (“we,” not “I”) was praying?

Events like this tend to draw attention to the Second Amendment, but the Free Exercise of Religion and Establishment clauses in the First Amendment are still in full force and effect.

        2. Empathy is not a disappearing virtue. You are totally wrong there. Every person, including Donald Trump, responds to empathy. The exceptions are those who suffer from psychopathy, and even they can learn to mimic caring, and can pass as normally functioning human beings, even running for political office.

        3. “Empathy is not a disappearing virtue. You are totally wrong there.”

Exactly right. But I would not expect a post back admitting any type of error, not one atomic particle. You’ll get MO tedious deflection on other topics because his ego simply can’t handle it …

        4. And the article you cited does not disagree that 22 school shootings had occurred, according to the CNN definition of an incident involving the discharge of a weapon at a school that involved at least one person (other than the shooter) being injured. They just disagree with that definition. Somebody needs to tell the other victims that dailywire.com doesn’t think that their deaths or injuries matter.

        5. Nice way to BS, I mean finesse, the reality which is misleading people into believing someone has marched into a school 22 times with an AR-15 and shot up the place.

In other words, they are two completely different types of crimes.

Why not just lump ALL the stats from a mile radius where most of the kids live, are those people’s injuries not as important?

        6. And the other is a real good way to BS by minimizing the reality that people are getting hurt with guns on school property where, if anywhere, they should be safe.

Claiming that it only counts as a “school shooting” if someone marches into a school with an AR-15 to shoot up the place is like claiming that it only counts as “rape” if the victim is physically overpowered by a total stranger.

You see the other cases as a completely different sort of crime, while I figure (as does CNN) that all bullet wounds inflicted at a school are equally harmful and equally unacceptable for a first-world country. Children should be safe from all shooters, not just one flavor of shooter.

        7. Nope, I never said it had to be an AR-15, I said the implication was there.

Now, what is your solution to school violence?
          Be specific please.

        8. It’s a complex problem that does not have a simple answer, but any possible solution needs to be based on facts, not ideology. As long as people keep denying that the magnitude of the homicide problem (and more generally the problem of gun violence) in America is enormously greater than in any other developed nation, we will be unable to identify what it is about our society that is allowing so many deaths to occur without any governmental effort to stop it. There is no point in talking about what to do until we agree that we should do something.

        9. “As long as people keep denying that the magnitude of the homicide problem (and more generally the problem of gun violence) in America is enormously greater than in any other developed nation”

In case you missed it, we have a Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to own guns. We also have over 200,000 gun laws and deny purchase to known criminals.

Breaking News to clueless TXuser — criminals do not obey laws!

Regarding the nation’s you support, most do not allow private ownership of guns. So, gee what a surprise gun deaths are lower when none are present. They simply kill people using different methods …

        10. And they kill far, far fewer of them. A murder in Britain makes the national news, while many murders in America don’t even get a mention in local newscasts. I am rather surprised that you admit that one reason (among others) for the higher homicide rate here is the wider availability of lethal weaponry. Watch out, or the NRA may be coming after you!

I do not “support” those other countries. They have their own problems, but giving children good cause to be terrified to go to school is not one of them. That is a real problem, not fake news, notwithstanding alt-right efforts to minimize it.

        11. In Nice, France, 86 people were killed after a man drove a truck into a Bastille Day celebration in July 2016. Ten people were killed and 14 were injured when a man plowed a van into a crowd of pedestrians on a Toronto sidewalk last month.

Vehicles have been used as a deadly weapon in many mass murder attacks. A man in a pickup truck hit several pedestrians in New York City in October, killing eight people and injuring others. And at least 13 people were killed when a van plowed into a crowd of people in Barcelona in August 2017. In Berlin, a man drove a tractor trailer into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people. In March 2017, a man drove an SUV into a crowd on the sidewalk along the Westminster Bridge in London, killing at least four.

          More vehicle-inflicted tragedies are listed
          here.

Using the “logic” of the gun-grabbers: BAN ALL MOTORIZED VEHICLES!

The problem isn’t the tools. It’s certain wielders of said tools.

        12. “Using the “logic” of the gun-grabbers: BAN ALL MOTORIZED VEHICLES!

The problem isn’t the tools. It’s certain wielders of said tools.“

          Amen!, amen!, amen!

The HYPOCISY of the gun grabbers is stunning. It has always been this way, and it will always BE this way. Blame the person, not the inanimate tool …

      2. I… ah… I was actually being absurd. Anyone who would seriously quibble over which words to use while children lay dead… I mean… wow. I don’t have kids or guns, so I see it like this:

If you’re liberal, I’ll support your gun control measures. If you’re conservative, I’ll support your upcoming tax increases to fully fund, then over fund EVERY single school so they can all be protected. I doubt either thing will happen, but I promise I won’t, sarcastically or otherwise, quibble over what words are used to represent how folks should pretend to give a damn, again.

    1. Thoughts and prayers neither heal wounds or raise the dead.

The biggest throwaway line in the universe- praying to an invisible, impotent and likely imagined guy (or gal) in the sky, out there somewhere where rainbows and unicorns rule and evil is not more.

      Human problems have human solutions.

  1. We will do everything in our power as long as it doesn’t cost of any of those NRA $$$ and Votes.

Thoughts and Prayers are free so we will give you lots of those.

    1. The NRA, of which I am proudly a member, is America’s longest-standing civil rights organization. The NRA did not pull the trigger, nor did any of the NRA’s millions of law-abiding members.

      1. Sounds like schools will have to be hardened. Laws don’t nullify a person’s intent to do harm. Our connected world only encourages the misguided to lash out knowing that they can share their pain with everyone else. What a shame that school shootings have become the “thing” to do. They are soft targets that cause lots of emotional pain. And today, no AR-15, no mythical assault weapon, just another douche intent on making a mark. I hope he can be analyzed to help identify others that fit a pattern and perhaps preempt another event in the future. How do we fix broken people before this crap happens?

        1. We don’t try to fix broken people before this happens. We bunker down and come up with more reasons to protect ourselves and our precious rights against the libtards that would emasculate us.

        2. Awesome synoptic common sense post, Herself.

Yes, next to impossible to “fix broken people” in advance — even after spotted on Facebook combined with citizen and family tips — WHERE is the intervention? There is little, most likely because people have rights and are allowed to act stupid if they have not done anything criminal.

Gold standard case in point is the recent Florida school shooter that was reported to the FBI after multiple warning signs from citizens and the internet. In addition, many other recent shooting examples displayed similar advance warning signs and NOTHING was done.

“We bunker down and come up with more reasons to protect ourselves and our precious rights against the libtards that would emasculate us.”

Amen! The school students that started nationwide rallies afterwards had no solutions. Except to be used as PAWNS for the DISHONEST Democratic Party and liberal media operatives to accomplish three goals:

          1. Totally trash the NRA that had absolutely NOTHING to do with it.
          2. Engage angry people to vote Democrat in November.
          3. Deny school armed guards, properly trained teachers and school officials to defend themselves.

Three libtard notions that will accomplish nothing, as history proves time and time again. Seriously, how many times do you have to hit your head against the wall before you figure out it hurts? The libtards are foolishly protesting maintaining the same old, same old gun-free school zones.

Yeah, tell that to the shooters …

        3. You can do BOTH. It’s really very simple. Parallel construction example: I can have ample compassion for a killer and pray for them as a human being for redemption. But that does not stop or disqualify me from describing an evil cold blooded killer and worthless piece of detritus plague on society that they are. Again, watch the black and white absolutes ONLY one way or the other …

      2. The NRA has nothing to do with civil rights or consumer advocacy. They are a gun manufacture lobbyist. The rest is a smoke screen to use the gullible to their advantage.

      3. The NRA is not a civil rights organization.

It was created so that in time of war, the citizens drafted into the Army would be better marksmen. General Ambrose Burnside was one of the early supporters of the Association.

Wayne The Peter (La Pierre) hijacked the organization with others and turned it into a combination political tool and lobby shop for the firearms industry. Does not matter what his current title happens to be, he is the guy pulling the strings.

When the NRA is doing it’s traditional things involving firearm safety and marksmanship it is doing a public good. When it is being used to exercise political control over the careerist weasels that make up the majority of Congress, it is doing a disservice to the nation.

        1. Well, if the NRA is not a civil rights organization, then what are they? Oh yeah, defenders of the Second Amendment to the Constitution. They also lobby like everyone else, wow, imagine that …

        2. They are an old organization dedicated originally to advance marksmanship and firearm safety that was hijacked in the aftermath of the Gun Control Act of 1968 to be essentially a lobby shop for the firearms industry.

        3. Hijacked? You mean after the liberals passed a landmark bill looking to roll back gun rights, the NRA did the natural thing that liberals brag and crow about — CHANGE WITH TIMES — by upgrading their focus in modern times. But you are too far left to see it …

And no, they are not totally controlled by gun industry. That dog don’t hunt. Be careful of framing arguments in absolutes, it’s not all either black or white …

  2. Please President Trump, could you do the rest of the world a favour and go running heroically and unarmed into the next mass gun shooting. You said you you were brave enough to do it.

  3. Take God out of schools and see what happens.
It’s only going to get worse. Wise up atheists and agnostics.

Don’t rationalize all the wonders and beauty of life and earth that were somehow created by ia Big Bang and Apes learning to walk upright.

Sounds good on paper, gives you an excuse to commit all the sin you want. Yep I believe. Not ashamed to believe.

Even if you don’t believe it’s a good way to live. Who knows. Maybe you will change your mind. Lol

    1. TRY not to be any more stupid than you have to be.

There is a direct correlation between religiosity and violence… only it’s the reverse of what you present and wish for. The safest countries in the world are the least religious.

Also, can’t help wondering how praying to the omipotent being who killed these kids or allowed them to be killed is supposed to help in any way.

        1. Top of the class, in both atheism and good behavior, come the Japanese. Fewer than ten percent are certain that God exists. Despite its size – over a hundred million people – Japan is one of the least crime-prone countries in the world.

Next in line are the Norwegians, British, Germans and Dutch. Fewer than one in three are convinced that there is a deity. Homicide rates are also low – around 1-2 victims per 100,000 people a year. (Similar, of course, for other European countries, such as Denmark, Holland, Sweden… etc.)

At the other end of the scale comes America. Over 50 percent of Americans believe in God. Homicide rates are at least five times greater than in Europe and ten times higher than in Japan.

    2. Re Glass Hollow
Gawd was never taken out of schools because he/she/it/they never was in it- at least legally.

The ban on prayer in schools only applies to the paid staff- students are still free to assemble in student clubs for prayer and bible study. The lawsuit that brought about the ban was enforcing well established law as the Illinois School in question was not only compelling students to religious observance- they were actively allowing proselytizing.

Students are also free to pray silently as they wish. Further, schools are allowed to teach religious texts as literature, in the context of history and also for comparative religion. The ban is in the best traditions of the founders who did not trust state religion, so they did not want any advancement of a particular faith in the public arena.

      1. Never in it legally?

Actually, religious talk was not only completely legal, it was part of the accepted curriculum.

It wasn’t until the intention of the Constitution was bastardized and mixed with a misinterpretation of Jefferson’s address to the Danbury Baptist that a plan to take religion OUT of the schools was successful.

Should students be forced to pray before school and study the Bible? No. Should coaches and teams or even events like games be allowed to have a prayer before a game when the VAST majority of those attending believe in this? Yes, and this can vary from district to district.

It’s not the “Separation of Church and State” (which was intended to keep government out of religion, NOT religion out of government) that has Christians, Jews, Muslim and Hindus arguing with each other over who’s influence is better (since the first three teach the life of Christ and the fourth accepts his existence) but rather have them arguing TOGETHER for increased moral teaching in school instead of this God is Dead attitude that offers no form of guidance to the adolescent.

Yes, I know this period of life is about rebellion, and I hated Psalms 100 that we said every morning in elementary, and I was angry at teachers who told me certain things were not God’s idea of good. Did any of that teaching hurt me? NO, matter of fact as I got older and went to larger schools I was angered at the “progressive” teachers that never missed a chance to insert their point of view negatively (but not necessarily correctly) about a time in our country’s history or any mention of a religious event. To me this was them using their position to undermine kids and young adults which did MUCH more harm than any small prayer that only taught us to be thankful for our mere existence. No, what many teachers soon began to spew was their anger and hatred of ANYTHING that resembled traditional values as systemically bad, and the older I got the worse they were until I absolutely despised two of my college “professors” because they spent so much damn time drumming hate into our heads and by GORE you re were NOT allowed to disagree because they weren’t their to enlighten us, they were bitter burned out failed professionals who had to lower themselves to teach because the real world kicked their asses and they resented it.

Oddly enough I had one college professor who was confined to a wheelchair, was prone to occasional spasms, and only had use of his left arm to guide electric his wheelchair, yet he could speak of ancient history so elegantly and factually for hours and days and not bore a student in the room. Did he teach about religion? Oh most certainly because without it he would not be teaching history. Did he slant towards any one particular? No, matter of fact he was an Atheist, and a few students didn’t like his portrayal of some parts of history, but he was very patient and professional and had no issue speaking matter of factually about the events. He had no desire to teach against religion, only how they were formed and their affects on civilizations and also those occurrences that affected the development of the religion itself. He taught the good and the bad of different sects and this helped to inform many who were of all creed to better see the what and why their belief systems were formed. This type of study should be mandatory between ages 12-15 because if done correctly people can understand religion without having to be “indoctrinated” and at the same time let many question their own beliefs rather than just accept them, but no it won’t be allowed because one in a thousand students might actually decide to accept a religion their parents are against and this can’t be allowed!!!

So let everyone carry on about school violence and its root cause, blame the NRA, blame assault rifles (although a 30/06 deer rifle could as much damage and apparently so can a shotgun, also pistols are much easier to hide), blame religion like Sean did (and failed to back up his claim), blame Republicans for any reason to make them feel better, blame TV, video games, movies and music, but what it all boils down to is not only are the ones committing the crimes so misguided, but in many ways so are many of the victims or at least the ones who push them to the brink of insanity when THEY act in ways that are hateful to a fellow student just to make themselves feel more superior. There is a void in many kids life and our resources to help them are crippled by the same selfishness that keeps a Manger scene off of a courthouse square. If you think it is worth this price to keep kids from understanding morality, then you have to accept the consequences. And remember, like I have said a dozen times here, you don’t need to believe in God to belong to a religion, and you don’t have to belong to a religion to believe in God and that also religion is part of our evolution, so anyone who truly thinks they know and understand human behavior will accept this whether they believe in a god or not.

        1. Great 👍🏻 post! As you pointed out the MAIN problem with educators is their bias and foisting it on their students. It has gone horribly WRONG from freedom of religion — to freedom FROM religion. The values taught were priceless and not having those values we lost the moral compass and caring reflected in the ME generation moving forward to present day …

        2. Equating assault rifles to a deer rifle is not exactly a good one. While both are capable of firing a lot of rounds quickly, but the behavior of the round is very different.

I have worked in the Medical field for over 30 years including in the US Army Medical Corps. If you could see x-rays, CT scans of photos comparing the wounds, you would see that they are quite different.

The rounds from an M-16 type weapon does not make the relatively clean wound of a hunting rifle- it devastates the tissues. The wounds from an assault type rifle are far more likely to permanently maim or kill than a hunting rifle.

          https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/04/health/parkland-shooting-victims-ar15.html

        3. Not true. Good to read you experienced one side of the equation under trying circumstances. As for the other, hunting rifles are far more explosive and do more tissue damage. They are calibered and bullets designed to do just that. I don’t think an AR-15 can’t make much of a dent in the hide of a rhino or an elephant (human skin is like putty by comparison). With the proper hunting rifle, one well placed shot is all that is required.
As Deniro famously said in the Deer Hunter movie, “one shot” …
