Apple’s next-gen 6.1-inch iPhone said to sport MLCD+ display

“Smartphone producers are beginning to use liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for their products again,” Cho Jin-young reports for BusinessKorea. “Manufacturers are expected to choose LCDs to block retail prices of smartphones from rising as they are pressed by retail prices of smartphones which are going up due to a rise in prices of smartphone parts.”

“According to the smartphone industry on May 9, Apple is expected to load its next 6.1-inch iPhone model with an MLCD+ display which LG used in its G7 ThinQ smartphone,” Cho reports. “The MLCD+ display realizes a bright screen with less power consumption than the IPS LCD display.”

“Its color reproduction rate is 100% on the DCI-P3 basis which expresses delicate colors close to nature even on bright screens,” Cho reports. “At the same brightness, the G7 ThinQ consumes 30% less power compared to the previous G6 model loaded with an LCD display.”

  1. This is good news, especially for Samsung who will lose out, they are milking $$ out of Apple with their OLED supply for the X. Nothing wrong with LCD, specially LG ones, they are power efficient and costs less. I love the retina screen i have on my SE, the 4s and my iPad 3. i dont want Samsung OLED.

    1. That’s just the nature of business. Whenever a company has an advantage, they use it to bleed rival companies. What company wouldn’t take advantage of cash-heavy Apple? Apple basically has to crawl on its belly and beg Samsung for OLED displays. Samsung is definitely laughing all the way to the bank as everyone highly praises Samsung for their bright OLED displays.

It would be funny if Apple could develop something that other companies would be begging for, but that will never happen because Apple wouldn’t sell their own advanced tech to rivals for any reason and that’s the smartest thing to do. Other companies will just do their best to copy whatever Apple has.

  2. Most went to IPS LCD years ago for the response time — fast gray-to-gray and black-to-white switching times. Several other lower power requirement LCD technologies of the past have had slower switching times–some slow enough to be easily noticeable by the user.

I haven’t seen any specifications on MLCD+ screens. And, anything on the standard contrast ratio?

On the positive side, 100% of the DCI-P3, even when the brightness is turned way up, is pretty impressive.
