Apple’s wearables business is now the size of a Fortune 300 company

“During Apple’s earnings call this afternoon, Tim Cook shared a pair of notable details about Apple’s wearables business,” Chance Miller reports for 9to5Mac.

“First off, Cook touted that Apple’s ‘Other’ category hit nearly $4 billion in revenue during the second quarter of 2018. The category, which includes AirPods, Apple Watch, HomePod, Beats, iPod Touch, Apple TV and more, brought in $3.96 billion in revenue,” Miller reports. “That is up 38 percent year-over-year, with wearables specifically increased 50 percent year over year, which includes AirPods, Apple Watch, and Beats.”

Miller reports, “Cook touted on the call that Apple’s wearables business is now the size of a Fortune 300 company.”

  1. You know who is full of bullshit? Macdailynews. This site spent much of the last two years complaining about Tim Cook (mainly cause they don’t like his politics) and apple but when Tim Cook’s Apple once again proves how great it is and how well it is doing Macdaily news acts like they called it right all along. if you had any decency you would place yourselves in the trash pile with all the other critics who don’t get Apple. you folks are the true Rob Enderles of our time.

    1. If you think Tim Cook is doing a great job, you have low standards. Or the wrong standards.

Oh, you say, but Apple is making tons of money! Why, yes, they certainly are!

Listen, let’s be honest, Steve Ballmer could’ve generated the same kind of money “running” Apple Inc. given the massive momentum Steve Jobs handed over at his death. Sometimes, in fact, it looks like Steve Ballmer is running Apple. Although, no, it doesn’t really, because even Ballmer would have updated the Mac Pro by now, made sure he had enough Apple Watches ready so as not to pretty much totally kill launch momentum, and also had enough Pencils and Keyboards on hand for the iPad Pro launch…

We’re coming up on two years now (this December 19th) since the Mac Pro debuted with no updates which, along with the rest of the string of snafus (going back to John Browett, Apple Maps, no iMacs for Christmas 2012, no iPad 2 units for launch, etc.), is what understandably prompts this sort of “joke” and “failure” talk and the feeling that Apple is a bit sloppy in recent years.

We hold Apple to a high standard and we expect the company to execute better than they have of late. (read more) — MacDailyNews, November 27, 2015

In the years since MDN wrote that, there have been many more errors, delays, and just general sloppiness from Tim Cook’s Apple.

      1. In the years since MDN wrote that, it’s fairly clear that they’re trying to rid the world of the Mac Pro AND the pro’s that think the Mac Pro needs to be “expandable”. That teeeny tiny drop in percentage of Mac sales is likely the last few realizing that they need to move on to another platform.

If you see that as a “planned path along the way to PostPC”, then the others are all minor momentary inconveniences which are wiped away by how well ALL those areas are performing now. Apple Watch momentum was totally killed… and those Pencils and Keyboards never shipped… If this is “joke” and “failure”, I wish there were more jokes of this type failing all over the place.

        1. Apple makes a “computer for the rest of us” and that’s not a Pro machine.”

so why did the come with an iMac Pro starting at $5000 and why did they promise a Mac Pro? The Mac Pro is the only machine SVPS APOLOGIZED over and they spoke about it again recently.

(isn’t it more convincing that they realized they were just tardy and now getting back into gear ?)

Notice also that ‘Post PC’ Macs just made more money than iPad . AGAIN. As it has for quarter after quarter of Post PCness for YEARS.

Notice also that ‘Post PC’ Macs just made more than Watch, TV, Beats, AirPods COMBINED. ($5.8 B vs 3.9 b ). AGAIN.

Note the difference is not peanuts but BILLIONS.

that in spite of slow updates and practically zero advertising vs tons of Watch, iPad, AirPod ads.

As an investor I’m totally happy iPad, Watch etc sales are so good and Apple takes care of them but…

hey, a billion here and billion there (or 5 or 6 billion) extra in Macs EVERY QUARTER and soon we’re talking real money… 🙂

          ————
The real reason Apple emphasizes iPads etc is actually this (which is sort of counter to the argument above) :

they love iPad because even though the hardware revenues are lower , the services revenue is high due to iPad unit sales volume and control of the iOS App store . Mac users can buy software from 3rd party sites where Apple makes ZERO. That’s the real reason Tim Cook likes iPads , not because of PostPCness or they are better tools but because large unit volumes of iPads generate MORE SERVICES REVENUE. It’s a Wallstreet Play and not consumer driven — as Wallstreet analysts want to see SERVICES REVENUE.

like I said as an aapl investor totally happy with iPad sales growth but no reason to ignore Macs, Apple can win at BOTH.

    2. All you’ve shown is your total lack of understanding of the complete Apple picture and how Tim Cook and his executives execution was not evenly applied to all the Apple product line in terms of apps and Macs.

There is absolutely NO excuse that any product in Apple’s lineup should languish, be ignored or be third or fourth rate after coming out first.

The Apple we expect is paying attention to it’s COMPLETE product line and firing on all cylinders. To not be doing that is a dereliction of leadership, no matter how great a quarter they have. If they had been paying attention we might already have a trillion dollar PLUS Apple on our hands.

You are the true can’t see-the-forest-for-the-trees John Dvorak of our time.

      1. … and that is the problem it is far too easy to take the easy money and just cover moves of others though with Cook that covering takes years as we see in respect of the Homepod a product that was being reported that apple would produce a year or more before we even saw the echo.

Steve Jobs had to make big bold decisions Cook does not its easy for him and sadly too easy as he increasingly fears making big bold statements. Things are fine as things stand but apple is no longer perceived to be the exciting company it once was especially in the Mac market where it seems totally confused as to what it should do despite having patents first for things that the PC brigade have now been producing for 3 or 4 years. It doesn’t want to be seen to be copying ideas it originally formulated so sticks with the status quo or tries to convince us things like the touch bar, as useful as it is as a replacement for dumb buttons, is the next big thing when clearly it is not.

    3. Considering how much money Tim Cook has to work with, I think he could do better without much effort. Ignoring desktop and notebook computer updates honestly makes the entire company look lazy. Updating a computer with new hardware isn’t exactly rocket science as many computer companies do it with the greatest of ease without having the working capital Apple has.

I have to admit, I’m not too happy about a CEO getting into politics although it does show Tim Cook has some humanity in him. It’s just that I’m more interested in a CEO who spends most of the time running the company and not doing all that side-business that mostly polarizes investors. Most big investors are very greedy people who can’t stand CEOs talking about giving their money to charities or the less fortunate.

I think Tim Cook is definitely doing an OK job and I really don’t have any right to complain.

  2. Apple watch.. my favorite Apple product at the moment… ( oh and beside communication and health aspects of it …. the beauty of using Apply Pay on it )

    Close second: iPhone X silver/white. Masterpiece !

  3. I’ll give you an example of the stupidity we get from macdaily news just this week. Apple wisely kills WiFi routers. A crummy business Apple had to be in years ago because no one was building the damn things. So now, Apple looks around sees a healthy business that there is no reason for them to be in and decides to kill of the line in I’m assuming, a move that allow them to focus on products that are actually important. Exactly what Steve Jobs did with printers years ago. And here’s MacDailyNews Rob Enderking it up claiming oh my god the sky is falling and Apple can’t focus and yadda yadda yadda. You guys are in love with computers and products that were very important 10 and 20 years ago. Apple wants to build new things Apple Watch or enter emerging markets with top of the line air pods, HomePod. Which is the Apple way. Steve called you out with his cars and trucks analogy and you still can’t live with it. MacDailyNews: making Rob Enderle look smart.

    1. Your viewpoint is unlikely to be popular with the crustaceans hereabouts, particularly barnacles whose livelihoods depend upon a stable hull, ideally one belonging to a ship that remains moored, never venturing outward.

    2. I hear u..
But way too early to ignore trucks… specially that iPhones and iPads are not yet totally independent of iTunes on Mac.
And they no where near offer the productivity of desktops.

      Plus.. Macs are iconic products!
Ignoring Macs for pros and powerusers ignores the foundational value they bring to the credibility of Apples technological prowess in the computing world.

With their resourse.. they dont need to dump products and cripple a comprehensive line up to focus on an airpod. Or alike …… ( obsolete products yes.. but not useful products that complement the lineup )
They all can and should coexist.

Pros and power users bring huge credibilty to the brand’s validity and image.

Desktops are not yesterday… large displays are not yesterday…
Just walk into any teens room! More than likely u will find gaming PC running windows and LG or Samsung monitors .. ….
Guess what platform are those kids getting accustomed to ? Guess what brands gains their mindshare . …… Guess what their mindset is… ( ill tell you. ,,, Apple computers are not powerful enough)
That is a horrible image for Apple to risk !

Go to schools… chrome everywhere… guess what those kids are getting accustomed to ?

All these hurt Apple’s image as the Guru of computing world.. a hurt that will trickle down their whole lineup if ignored. (And lets not forget AI .. they are behind … )

At the end.. imo .. it is not just about direct profits from every individual product … It is also about coherence, synergy, comprehensiveness and the Marketing/PR milage some products offer ….Showing the world Apple is the kings of computing.. at every level.

      1. “Guess what their mindset is…”
Guess how many are playing Fortnite on their iPhones!

“Guess what those kids are getting accustomed to?”
I’m guessing… iOS running on their iPhone and their iPad? Chrome is that crummy ‘poor school OS’ and they wish their school had iPads.

      2. Given that Apple has announced a Mac Pro in the next 1-2 years and they’re reviving their monitor biz, they won’t be abandoning trucks anytime soon. The reality is though that the vast and ever-increasing majority of users get by with a smartphone and a craptop of some kind. Apple’s iPad biz will surpass all Macs sooner rather than later. What sucks is having to consider a 2015 Macbook because current options are too expensive/unreliable/limited.

  4. MDN took out my post for some reason …

anyhow what I stated was that:

Macs are near a Fortune 100
They made more money than Watch, TV, AirPods, Beats COMBINED. AGAIN. 5.8 b vs 3.9b.

Macs also made more than iPad. As they have for years.

So Macs are hardly dead, making billions in spite of slow updates and practically zero advertising vs tons of Watch, iPad, Beats etc ads.

The real reason Tim Cook loves iPads is that not that there is no consumer demand for Macs or iPads are better tools but that iPads is good for SERVICES REVENUE, due to iPad unit numbers and the iOS App store. Mac users can get software elsewhere where Apple makes ZERO. iPads are emphasized because it’s a Wallstreet Play as Wallstreet loves Services Revenue.

As an investor I’m Ok with better iPad sales but no reason why they can’t also take care of Macs, they have resources to do BOTH. (I do see some waking up with iMac Pro and rumoured scheduled updates for other Macs)
