“Apple’s iOS 11 operating system now powers 76% of active devices in the wild,” Christian Zibreg reports for iDownloadBlog.
“The new data point was captured by App Store on April 22, 2018 and released today via Apple’s dashboard for developers,” Zibreg reports. “iOS 10 is still found on 10% of active iOS devices while older versions account for 5% of devices that are unsupported by iOS 11.”
“To put that in some context, Android 8.0 Oreo, the latest and greatest version of Google’s mobile operating system, is installed on 4.6% of devices,” Zibreg reports. “The vast majority of Android hardware is on [OS] versions [that are three] years old.”

Oh wait… they mean active iOS devices.
It went from impossible to impressive in one line.
What’s an “active device”?
We have old phones used as iPods or remote controls, permanently docked in cars, etc. There is no point in updating the software and they are seldom if ever used to connect to cellular networks (many of them use wifi a lot though). Do these get captured in the metrics?
I only have one iPhone SE running iOS 11. (11.2.1)
All my other current iDevices are STILL running iOS 10.3.3.
iOS 11 is still crap and buggy as hell!
That’s a bit harsh, but there are good (bad) reasons for holding back. For example:
1) Your iPhone is too full of photos and the iOS11 update won’t even download (let alone install). Most casual users don’t know how to resolve this.
2) You have some trusty old apps with pages of work (like PlainText), which you can neither upload or afford to delete, which iOS warns you will not work under iOS11. The prospect of losing that data scares you to bits.
People forget that iOS10-11 is a major structural upgrade because it was so simple and easy for them. However, with these ‘difficulties’ resolved, the adoption rate of iOS11 may climb much higher than 76% afterwards.
