How to create ebooks with Pages on Mac

“Creating an excellent ebook on your Mac — without being locked into sharing it only through the iBooks Store – is now almost as simple as exporting a file,” Nathan Alderman writes for iMore. “Apple’s latest version of Pages adds robust support for EPUB3 files, letting you turn nearly any document into an ebook ready to sell via iBooks, quickly convert for Kindle, or just share with friends, family, or classmates.”

“This new update makes Pages the easiest way I’ve yet found to turn out high-quality ebooks on your Mac,” Alderman writes. “Even if you don’t regularly use Pages, you may want to give it a try just for this feature.”

“Before you begin: Fixed or reflowable?” Alderman writes. “What kind of book do you want to publish? For text-heavy books like short stories or novels, use a reflowable template, which changes each book’s layout and page count to accommodate the screen size of the device on which it’s being read. Reflowable templates can include images, as long as they’re inline with the rest of the text. But if you want to incorporate lots of images, and preserve your page layouts on any device, use a fixed template instead.”

  1. Good timing. Just found some 50 year old, out of copyright books that someone else did as PDFs. The worst type of ebook.
I was just looking at the best way to recreate as clean, properly formatted ebook.
Will have to test this out.

  2. the Question i never see answered about new PAGES eBooks:
    1. is it better / more advanced than iBooks Author?!
    2. will iBooks Author no longer be updated/upgraded?
    3. can you import iBooks Author iBooks, to continue editing, without any loss of formatting/effects/links/Bookry widgets etc.?
    4. is it compatible with Bookry widgets (http://bookry.com/author/widget/library/?from=classwidgets)?
    5. should one convert all iBooks Author iBooks into Pages, before iBooks Author format is made obsolete?

thanks for any help/tips/links on this matter! ; )

    1. You expect comparison/contrast and historical context from discarnate news articles such as this which are geared to short attention spans? You ask for too much from free articles.

      1. 1. why the critique, if no one wants to answer, they do not have to.
        2. i did try to comment on iMore article directly, but they do not allow for comment if you do not have a “reputation”
        3. i do not expect a dissertation comparing the 2 Apple apps, just a link to an article if someone has seen one, or a summary of essential points if someone knows, that’s all.

    2. 1. No, it’s focused on creating ePub books that CAN be iBooks, but lacks all the advanced features of the latter.
      2. As a result of 1, I doubt iBooks Author will be gotten rid of as it creates feature rich iBooks. The Pages feature described doesn’t do that.
      3. No and 4. No. Widgets is an iBook thing, these create ePubs.
      5. I’d say wait. I see this change as more of a “Look, kids, you can share things that will open up in the iBooks app.” More than a replacement for the iBooks format.

Apple needed an easier way that iBooks Author for folks to create shareable books. They also needed a way to create those books on an iPad, this feature solves both problems.

      1. wrong again? what/who is wrong?

wow, thank you for all the answers! ; )
so you used both new Pages & iBooks Author to know all this? i can’t find an Apple or 3rd party article on this comparison.

thank you for your time – haha, you have humour, i just noticed Wrong Again is your user name, not comment title ; )

        1. Yes, I have the new Pages and was lightly disappointed until I re-read all the announcement information closely. It says “it’s easy to make beautiful, interactive books with image galleries and videos right inside Pages”. Interactive COULD mean widgets, but it could also just mean “you can click play on a video” or “you can swipe through an image gallery.” Going further to Pages’ Advanced Book Creation options and you see, yah, it’s just ePub.

Which isn’t HORRIBLE. I mean, if all you have to create with is an iPad, then this is a great tool for you. Using Pages on iOS (macOS, too), you can easily publish your work in the iBooks store. For example, if you’re an artist with a webcomic and want all your toons in a collection for the store, you don’t need the power of iBooks Author for that. This should open up the iBooks store for a lot of new free and pay content. But, for real iBook creation, you’ll still need iBooks Author.

I would NOT be surprised if this is just the first step to migrating this type of work to iOS devices, though. Maybe in another few years, we won’t need iBooks Author on a Mac (if Apple has their way). 🙂

    1. So John, what makes your dingdong so special? Why are you such a special example of humanity?
