“Apple today released the second beta of an upcoming macOS High Sierra 10.13.5 update to public beta testers, two weeks after seeding the first beta and three weeks after releasing macOS High Sierra 10.13.4,” Juli Clover reports for MacRumors. “Today’s public beta is identical to the second beta provided to developers earlier this week.”
“macOS High Sierra 10.13.5 once again introduces support for Messages on iCloud, a feature that was present in macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 betas but pulled ahead of the release of the updated software,” Clover reports. “Messages on iCloud is designed to store your iMessages in iCloud for improved syncing. Right now, incoming iMessages will be sent to all devices where you’re signed into your Apple ID, but it’s not true cloud-based syncing because your old messages don’t show up on new devices nor does deleting a message remove it from all of your devices, both features enabled through Messages on iCloud.”
“The Messages on iCloud feature also allows your older iMessages to be stored in iCloud rather than on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, saving valuable storage space,” Clover reports. “Older attachments are also stored in iCloud.”

MacDailyNews Take: Sometimes we feel like we’ve been waiting forever for the public release of Messages in iCloud; likely because, in tech time, we have.

Apple had damn well get this one right. A lot of folks have messages that are considered precious and will be furious if these old messages or any of them really get lost during this shift to iCloud storing them.
Also, will there be an en masse way to download all of your messages for backup or just to get them out of your iCloud data? Notes, for example, pitifully allows one to email only one note at a time. Without using a 3rd party app there is no way to easily backup all of your notes and mine are still not syncing correctly!?!? Does anyone know how this will be implemented?
Oh goodie! I get to buy more storage on iCloud.
Apple loses me as a customer forever if if keeps forcing cloud server rental.
So! Are all our iCloud stored messages encrypted such that only those creating and receiving the messages can read them?
Or is this just another way for the totalitarian dickheads to spy on the citizenry they swore to serve and protect by way of the US Constitution?
