Fired FBI director James Comey reveals how Apple’s encryption efforts drove him crazy

In his newly released book, A Higher Loyalty, fired FBI director James Comey writes about President Trump while also addressing other aspects of his career, including his strong objection to Apple’s (and Apple’s followers’) encryption efforts.

“When Apple and Google announced in 2014 that they would be moving their mobile devices to default encryption, by emphasizing that making them immune to judicial orders was good for society, ‘it drove me crazy,’ he writes,” Marcus Baram reports for Fast Company. “He goes on to lament the lack of ‘true listening’ between tech and law enforcement, saying that ‘the leaders of the tech companies don’t see the darkness the FBI sees,’ such as terrorism and organized crime.”

MacDailyNews Note: Apple, as usual, did it first. Google, as usual, just followed Apple’s lead:

Me-too Google: Uh, okay, we’ll do default encryption like Apple, too (it’ll just take several years to roll out) – September 18, 2014

I found it appalling that the tech types couldn’t see this. I would frequently joke with the FBI “Going Dark” team assigned to seek solutions, “Of course the Silicon Valley types don’t see the darkness – they live where it’s sunny all the time and everybody is rich and smart.” — James Comey

“President Trump’s views on the issue remain unclear,” Baram reports. “During the FBI/Apple’s standoff over the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone, Trump denounced the company and called for a boycott. But while other top cabinet officials, like Attorney General Jeff Sessions, have been outspoken about the need to ‘overcome encryption,’ the president hasn’t said much on the subject.”

  1. James Comey is all about James Comey. He met the President, all of what, 3 times? He stretches every aspect of those out in an attempt to fill pages to sell a book.

He then goes off into all sorts of topics, because, you can’t write a book on 3 meetings so hey, let’s throw Apple in there. Everyone likes to read about Apple!

    Please…

    1. “He met the President, all of what, 3 times?”

All at Trump’s request. The end result, Trump had Comey fired when he was at some conference. Comey first found out about it through cable news.

Trump then went on to meet with Russians in the white house with NO Americans other than Trump bragging to them how the Russian investigation is a cloud lifted.

  2. Although, I think you meant Comey was a fool when you called him an idiot, Comey is indeed in the literal or strict sense (in so far as the word shares the same root as idiosyncratic) an idiot. He’s not stupid nor dishonourable nor dishonest, but there is no predictable relation between his thinking and his actions. This is patent, not only in his present behavior in his TV interview and book in relation to Trump, but also in his handling of Clinton’s emails (clumsy both in execution and his present explanations), and, of course, his behavior in relation to privacy (the constitutional right to which he seems to have very little grasp), and his desire for a backdoor to Apple’s iPhones.
The mind boggles as to how such a loose cannon ascended to the heights of public service, although he has provided us all some amusement in first delivering us a congenital liar and incompetent as President, and then remarking that the imcompetent’s fingers aren’t as small as you might expect!

  3. “MacDailyNews Take: When we called James Comey “the FBI’s idiot in chief” over two years ago, we meant it.”

Glad some (probably most of us here) remember this. Not the first time this moron has been called out by the public. And then he writes about those times in his book. Go figure.

  4. I agree MDN. We DO NOT need nor want that kind of person in authority. Going around blabbing, writing books, whatever to get fame, attention, and to attempt to salvage a reputation that I don’t think he had as a good lawman.

  5. it drove me crazy

    ?! Who drove WHO crazy?!

If Mr. Comey doesn’t like the Fourth Amendment, then TOUGH! We The People rule the USA, NEVER our government. They only represent us. If and when that is not the case, it’s time for some governmental heads to roll. Despite all The Trumpian BS, I’m personally not sad to see Mr. Comey gone from the FBI. Perhaps he should find a country without citizen rule…

The Fourth Amendment To The US Constitution
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

Nothing in the Fourth Amendment says anything about backdoors being required in anything. It never will. Technological ignorance is certainly part of Mr. Comey’s problem. But clearly, he’s no fan of the mandates of the US Constitution. Good riddance.

    1. Oh and of course, Mr. Comey challenged this constitutional amendment as well. 😛

5th Amendment to the US Constitution
“No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

No US citizen can be compelled to unlock or decrypt their technological data. Deal with it.

      1. Thanks for the 5th Amendment refresher.

But the loophole lies in “in time of War or public danger” thus allowing warmongers to use flimsy justifications to degrade the 5th.

      2. Don’t forget Article 5. of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” along with a few others that your traitorous nation no longer pays attention to.

No human should be tortured, nuff said.

Thanks for the feedback on the Facebook post, I might write a reply later tonight. Always a pleasure to see you around.

  6. Speaking directly from Comey’s dark heart.

He recounted Hillary’s crimes but then exonerated her. One of Hillary’s crimes was to share classified data with Russia from her insecured, homebrew server. But, hey, Bush is a much, much greater criminal yet he’s sipping Margaritas in the shade.

Lesson: Big people don’t go after big people.

  7. “the leaders of the tech companies don’t see the darkness the FBI sees,” such as terrorism and organized crime.”

Oh I think the world sees the terrorism and acts against humanity, that emanates from Apple’s home nation Commie unless of course you have the stars and skidmarks shoved deep inside your rectal orifice.

Oh the drama queens with their best selling tell tale books. Loose lips sink ships.

  8. Just a fucking advice for the MDN. Sell your AAPL stock and get the fuck out! You are discusting with these Russian & Putin Bimbo automatic Potty & Fox Fake News (Fox Fokker No News) & Rash Limbo & Putan & El Idiota Trumpo small Pence.

We just star boycotting this site and do something else. For the name of the Potty!!
