Facebook AI predicts your future and sells this info to advertisers

“Facebook’s artificial intelligence software can predict your future behaviour and sells this information to advertisers, it has emerged,” Tim Collins and Harry Pettit report for The Daily Mail. “Leaked documents have revealed that the social network offers firms the ability to target users based on how they may think and act in the future.”

“Called ‘loyalty prediction’, the system guesses whether or not a user is about to stop using a product or service based on all of the data stored on their profile,” Collins and Pettit report. “As part of this latest service, the advertiser is granted the power to bombard your feed with marketing material in order to change your course of action. ”

“Leaked documents reveal the new service is being offered to Facebook’s advertising clients, according to reports in The Intercept,” Collins and Pettit report. “The service is not about showing you Pepsi ads because you have bought Coca-Cola, a long established technique in online marketing. Instead, it aims to predict the fact that you’re dropping drinking soda altogether.”

MacDailyNews Take: #deletefacebook

We use FaceBook as an RSS feed. Our CMS automatically reposts our article headlines and links them back to our website. That is our only interaction with Facebook and has been our only interaction with Facebook for years. We deleted our personal accounts many years ago.

If you want to share photos and videos with friends, text them using Apple’s end-to-end encrypted iMessage service. You need to control your social networking, not cede it to a gatekeeper like Facebook. – MacDailyNews, March 19, 2018

The problem is two-fold: Facebook – and companies like Facebook that thrive on user data (Google, for one, if not the, prime example) and gullible users who piss their privacy and the privacy of their “friends” away willy-nilly while naively sending their DNA off to be analyzed by other companies.

  1. I wonder what they predict for terrorist governments that torture people, deny them justice and massacre people in other countries for imaginary hallucinations.

    1. Adolf Hitler, dead,
      Saddam Hussein, dead,
      Muhammar Khaddafi, dead,
Kim Jong Whatever, still in power,
A Castro in Cuba, still in power.
      So about 60% are dead.

  2. Guess the MDN editor isn’t using AI…the obtrusive “you can win a thousand dollar gift card for answering four questions!” Has popped up for the last time for me on this app. I’m out.

  3. I find it interesting that many are deleting Facebook and keeping Twitter. Of the 2, I see Twitter as more valuable as it is a good tool for discovery of stuff.

Follow authors, journalists, experts and others that you trust and that cover subjects of interest and you get notified every time they have new content up. Ask nice questions and be polite and you can commonly get great replies to your questions.

For those of you who are burdened with Comcast as an ISP- using @ComcastCares will get you better and faster service and response than chat, the website, the phone or whatever. It goes directly to their national service HQ and they are quite responsive. You can also send info via direct message which can help get stuff diagnosed and fixed.

Best of all you do not have to deal with the damn phone system or get endlessly pitched for new service.

Maybe Apple should buy Twitter. Just do not put Eddy Cue in charge of it.

  4. FB, Google, other ad based sites (and MDN) probably scratch their heads figuring my sales buying habits. For some reason, I have never appreciated high pressure or second guessing my wants. When bombarded with ads for specific items, I resent it and will NOT buy those or from those companies. I have resented other people telling me what to buy since I understood what commercials were. A few years ago, I researched a couple of items and then they popped up in ads on FB. I decided then that I didn’t want them.

I realize that there are not that many people that are so turned off by ads.

As to targeting me with news links, I do not click on links targeted to me by other sites. A habit I picked up years ago.

  5. Sigh. Not this BS again. They may be *attempting* to use algorithms to ‘predict the future’, I gaurantee they aren’t doing it with any degree of legitimacy or accuracy. If a person is really, genuinely so shallow and asleep at the wheel to have a parlor trick like this work, they were probably asking for it. I know some millennial will make an incomprehensible leap to a rape analogy there, I could give a sh**. Pieces like this give silly valley waaaaay too much credit. Condemn the inent, absolutely, but don’t ascribe super powers where there is only social ineptitude and a profound misunderstanding of human nature.
