Apple hires Google’s A.I. chief to improve Siri

“Apple has hired Google’s chief of search and artificial intelligence, John Giannandrea, a major coup in its bid to catch up to the artificial intelligence technology of its rivals,” Jack Nicas and Cade Metz report for The New York Times. “Apple said on Tuesday that Mr. Giannandrea will run Apple’s ‘machine learning and A.I. strategy,’ and become one of 16 executives who report directly to Apple’s chief executive, Timothy D. Cook.”

“‘Our technology must be infused with the values we all hold dear,’ Mr. Cook said Tuesday morning in an email to staff members obtained by The New York Times. ‘John shares our commitment to privacy and our thoughtful approach as we make computers even smarter and more personal,'” Nicas and Metz report. “Mr. Giannandrea, a 53-year-old native of Scotland known to colleagues as J.G., helped lead the push to integrate A.I. throughout Google’s products, including internet search, Gmail and its own digital assistant, Google Assistant.”

“When news broke Monday that Mr. Giannandrea was unexpectedly stepping down as Google’s A.I. chief, he immediately became perhaps the most eligible tech executive on the market,” Nicas and Metz report. “By Tuesday, it became clear he was never really on the market.”

MacDailyNews Take: This is a major coup for Apple.

Here’s to a Siri that finally just works!

    1. My guess is Giannandrea grew increasingly uncomfortable with Google’s approach to privacy and user data and wanted to move to the only tech company taking privacy seriously.

      1. My guess is Apple offered a buttload of money. It’s that simple. I’m not sure any of these people have principles any longer. They ride the AI train looking forward and never look back at all the corpses (privacy, security, etc.) left in the wake of that train. It’s the wave of the future they say and the ends justify the means. It’s a sad state we are currently in where personal fortune wins over morality and principle. Apple is the most principled that I’m aware of but it’s not perfect either.

  1. Wishing him luck in improving Siri and making it work at least as well as the competition within the restrictions Apple’s security policy places on the skills and knowledge he has acquired while employed at Google. He has his work cut out for him.

    1. Maybe he can at least make compound commands a reality. “Hey Siri, turn off my living room lights and turn on my bedroom lights and set the scene in the bedroom to Relax and make sure my garage door is closed.” If only it could be so simple.

  2. I always find that the top brass rarely know WTF is really going As they just co-ordinate a strategy rather than know how the implementation is achieved..I don’t think Apple need any more buffoons giving orders ..they need tech savvy passionate geeks!

    1. You sir have been watching too much TV. The reason you think the “top brass” rarely know what is going on is because they are NOT usually dwelling in day to day issues. There are definitely poorly run and some well run companies. But for the most part “top brass” is doing what their shareholders and investors are asking them to do. You actually do need people “giving orders”, setting budgets, developing delivery schedules, doing material planning, recruiting and retaining talent, and making sure people get paid. Apple isn’t four geeks in their parents garage, they haven’t been that for almost 40 years and they CAN’T go back but they need to build and SHIP quality products. And they have to work on sexy new products but continue to ship un sexy products like SDKs, accessories, and software “that just works” which isn’t something you can trust a bunch of “Tech savvy passionate geeks” to do or you wind up with a mess.

  3. Lets see where they take it ???
I dont need famous names…. I need functioning sophisticated results.

Apple had big head strart and look at how they managed it!

Apple AI from the basic spell check level , to contextual understanding to more sophisticated AI ( like siri) and consistsnt implementation of the Ai across the ecosys SUCKS.. compared to competition.
Why the hell … ? What kind of delusional thinking and arrogance allows this to happen.
Along with ignoring education/schools, gamers, pro/power users!

They better take these damn seriously, act fast and catchup and beyond… its really really concerning to me!

( been crying out about these for years now! If i could see it so many years ago along with some others ….. where the F was the management’s mind , those who are raking in 20million + in bonuses annually, where the f were they… blind and floating in lala land?)

I keep my fingers crossed 🤞 … Hope Tim adjusts managments attitude and direction and performance.. not just hand out shares for shit .
