Eddy Cue comments on Apple’s recent moves in original video content

“Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddie Cue appeared onstage at SXSW on Monday, and discussed a range of topics, including their just-announced acquisition of magazine app Texture,” Darrell Etherington reports for TechCrunch. “Cue also made some comments regarding Apple’s recent moves in original video content, where it’s been acquiring a number of TV series from high-profile creators.”

“Cue noted that Apple does believe a shift is coming regarding how people get their media content, and noted that it’s being strategic and picky about its content buying,” Etherington reports. “Cue admitted that Apple is now ‘making big investments’ financially speaking in original content, adding that spending cash “isn’t an issue” for the tech company, which is sitting on one of the largest available cash piles of any company in the world. He added that around 40 people are now dedicated to building out its Apple TV content business.”

Etherington reports, “The Apple exec drew comparisons between the company’s approach to content and Pixar’s, meaning it has a focus on quality storytelling, and also suggested there will be some ‘surprises’ in store for how the programming is viewed once available.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote last August:

It’s certainly nice to see Apple finally getting serious about original content, however late they may be. Apple definitely has the resources to cover ground lost via clueless dithering and blatant mismanagement extremely quickly.

  1. TC’s original headline: “Eddy Cue explains Apple’s original video content strategy.”

Eddy Cue couldn’t explain how to get a cup of coffee at a Dunkin’ Donuts. Eddy had it explained to him by Van Amburg and/or Erlicht.

  2. Eddy Cue:

    used to run SIRI
used to run the Mac App Store.

in charge of iBooks (lost stupid DOJ iBooks fixing case costing 450 million).

in charge of iTunes and Apple Music (including sales) where there is a special Apple Rihanna page (i.e Rihanna is important Apple asset) . Shouted at Rihanna in front of thousands of fans at NBA Finals… Video Goes Viral. Fans start petition to boycott Apple….

in Charge of Apple Music. 36 million subscribers out of 1.3 Billion installed iOS base after spending hundreds of millions and (according to Iovine) hiring ‘hundreds of curators’ and giving ‘stars’ like Chance the Rapper 500 million for a TWO WEEK exclusive. (Note 36 million subscribers at 10 bucks a month is 360 million dollars. Can’t even pay ONE artist. ) Finally Tim Cook says “were not in Apple Music to make money. We’re helping artists ‘….. (well… Ok… They were ALSO trying to help authors , see DOJ iBooks case above. )
Then Axl Rose calls Tim cook ‘Donald Trump’… (??? )

in charge of Apple TV content (go look at Netflix… )
in charge of Apple TV (does he actually use the remote… ? )

    etc.

Greatest talent: … best pals with Tim Cook ?

  3. Eddy Cue has been on my Useless People list for about a year now. I would give almost anything to exchange him for Scott Forstall, a man who could actually do things. Because of his fondness for the Golden State Warriors, Eddy Cue has even made me despise them as much as the New England Patriots. Because of him, basketball is almost unwatchable because his fat cheerleader ass is always there in the front row, instead of at his fscking desk at Apple HQ taking care of the business he left to his inexperienced subordinates.

  4. I think that Jobs made Ive top manager over gadget design aesthetics; Then Cook made him lord over technology and I think vision. Forstall was technology prince under Jobs and Cook. If Forstall were to return, technology dukedom would likely be taken away from Ive and returned to F. Forstall’s personality and management style was divisive enough that top executives like Ive and perhaps the hair guy bristled when they were in his presence so, should F. return, Ive might be tempted to leave with his mate and others would also leave.

But, if Forstall has that sharp vision of seeing the future like Jobs had but that Apple seems to now be weak on, and he can recreate it, then I would be OK with his return because, I believe, design in the case of Ive can be done by one of his underlings and perhaps even improved upon.

Cue may be getting a bad reputation unjustly; I have a hard time beliving that he’s dead wood. I am willing to accept that he’s doing well for Apple.
