Apple orders animated comedy ‘Central Park’ from ‘Bob’s Burgers’ creator Loren Bouchard

“Apple continues to grow it series-programming slate, adding its first animated show,” Daniel Holloway reports for Variety. “The digital giant has given a two-season series order to Central Park, a musical comedy from Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard and 20th Century Fox Television. ”

“Written by Bouchard, Josh Gad, and Nora Smith, the series is described as telling the story of how a family of caretakers, who live and work in Central Park, end up saving the park, and basically the world,” Holloway reports. “Produced by 20th Century Fox Television — where Bouchard is under an overall deal — Central Park stars Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Titus Burgess, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Daveed Diggs, and Kathryn Hahn.”

Holloway reports, “Apple has moved aggressively into series development in recent months, despite having not yet unveiled a platform for its new content.”

    1. I found most of the musical numbers in Bob’s Burgers to be painful.
I just can’t see watching a show full of them.
Hopefully it will live up to Home Movies and earlier seasons of Bob’s Burgers.

  1. Can’t expect Bob’s Burgers from this. Wholly different creative/writing team.

And you wouldn’t want another Bob’s. Just hope it’s good on its own.

Second announcement of talented creatives in recent weeks, as opposed to the early releases that led with performers’ names (not usually a bellwether of great programming).

Spielberg’s involvement early on didn’t really excite me — his recent & upcoming work (including his project with Apple) is HEAVY on sequels/reboots, so I’m of the opinion that he’s not exercising the discrimination in his body of work that he once did.

But Shamalyamadingdong and Bouchard are good gets. Money talks, Apple has lots, and these things are contagious in that business.

Still disappointing for Apple to be GETTING into this business, though. Hope it won’t contribute to their Zune-tracking product quality.

  2. Why don’t they break the content part of apple off from the rest of the company ? Then they can concentrate better on the ‘core’ parts of the company they have been ignoring the last few years

  3. Baby steps…

But I still contend that this is Apple perilously stepping outside their fields of expertise. It’s a hobby within a hobby, aka TV. If this hobby is given autonomy under skilled and motivated leadership, it might not suck.
