Morgan Stanley: Apple made too many iPhones, putting chip stocks at risk

“Morgan Stanley believes Apple’s poor iPhone sales results and rising inventory levels are bad news for the industry’s chip suppliers,” Tae Kim reports for CNBC.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple did not have “poor iPhone sales results” and anyone who tells you they did is either ignorant or a liar.

“‘Disappointing iPhone units combined with an inventory overbuild should continue to have a pronounced impact on Apple suppliers and the smartphone segment more broadly,’ Morgan Stanley semiconductor analyst Joseph Moore wrote in a note to clients Monday entitled ‘iPhone weakness is driving a sharp inventory correction.’ ‘We remain cautious on Skyworks Solutions, and see some risks to the broader semis cycle,'” Kim reports. “As a result, Moore reiterated his underweight rating on Skyworks Solution shares. He has a $85 price target for the chip supplier, representing 14 percent downside to Friday’s close.”

MacDailyNews Take: Nowhere in the article is the rather salient point mentioned that Q118 was a 13-week quarter vs. a 14-week first quarter in fiscal Q1 2017. iPhone unit sales did not decrease on a weekly basis, only on an unequal period of time labeled a “quarter.” Were Q118 14 weeks or Q117 13 weeks in length, iPhone unit sales grew YOY.

Those who claim otherwise are disingenuous.

        Here’s a concept: either the US president has a significant effect on the gambling den that is Wall Street or he doesn’t.

        A — If yes, then sustained stock gains should be credited to the president that took action to enable those gains (8 straight years of growth under Obama); if losses are incurred, then we must look at the presidential policies and ask if reform is needed. Too early to tell how long the Trump reforms will fare, but shooting adrenaline into the coffers of multinational companies doesn’t seem to result in a directly upward moving stock market.

        B — Alternatively, if the president isn’t a big factor in corporate wealth, then he and his clan should stop their immature tweet and repeat claims that one person made all the gains and the evil press or the fbi or the losing candidate from last year is all to blame for everything.

        2. Dav- if you chose not to buy apple under 100 then my guess is you dont have funds in the market. Besides having the best p/e ratio of any big multinational, 284 billion in cash reserves, double digit growth on a week by week basis in iphone, growth in ipad, and overall domination with apple watch i cant see a good reason to buy it either. Maybe it is the fact that they will control their entire supply chain within 10 years or that the develop their own chips, or run most of their operations on green energy, or have faceid tech cited as being 2 years ahead of anyone else, or that they make more off services than samsung does on phones, or… well ill just stop there and you can take in what an absolutely ridiculous comment you have just made.

        3. I have Apple stock, I just have not bought more since well before the 7-1 Split. I have not been buying any new stock for some time awaiting a market correction (⬇︎10% or more) and do not think we are done.

          I kept my Tesla, VW, Amazon, & Apple stock. Most of the rest was liquidated to cash/bonds some time ago. The market has been overdue and I am not sure yet this is the full reset.

      The same rules that apply to Congress and the States also apply to all other governments and government agents within the United States of America. That includes the courts, so you can’t even sue somebody for exercising free speech (absent a malicious lie or imminent threat to public order), much less sent them to the guillotine.

  4. The sell off, buy back, sell off frenzy today, happened in 10 minutes. It’s like a Rorschach test for all of the idiots on this site that turn everything into politics. Robots belong to no political party. The sell off is not about bad press or anything other than lots of robots deciding it was time to take profit. This type of trading needs to be banned.
