I’m going to beat my type-2 diabetes, thanks to Apple

“After being diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes, I turned to Apple to help me to improve my health and make better lifestyle choices,” Bryan M. Wolfe writes for AppAdvice. “So far, things are moving in the right direction.”

“For a better part of a year, I stopped exercising on a regular basis. As a result, I gained 15 pounds. My eating habits also worsened. Even before the weight gain, my body mass index (BMI) showed that I was overweight. I was now officially obese,” Wolfe writes. “As part of my initial treatment for Type-2 diabetes, I’m now on Metformin to lower my glucose levels. As a precaution, my doctor also prescribed Lipitor and a daily aspirin to lower my risk of heart disease. Genetically, I’m at risk for heart problems and high blood pressure.”

“Despite my diagnosis, I’ve been told I can reverse the effects of Type-2 diabetes with continued exercise and by losing weight. I’m now in the process of trying to lose 50 pounds. One month in, I’ve lost 15 of those, which is a good start,” Wolfe writes. “Since being diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes in December, my iPhone has become my biggest partner in my treatment… My goal is to lift weights and do cardio at least three to four times a week. So far, so good on this count. To help me with this, I’m using my Apple Watch to keep track of my time on the Elliptical machine… In a short period, Apple has become a key player in healthcare. Thanks to Apple Watch and Apple HealthKit, the company is making it easier than ever for each of us to monitor and improve our health.”

  1. Hmm…. The American Diabetes Association now recommends, for people with very hard to control diabetes, gastric bypass surgery. People who get a bypass are typically off of all of their diabetes medication within hours following surgery.

People who get massive doses of antibiotics during aggressive treatments frequently lose much of the digestive flora in their stomach and intestines as a side effect. When this happens they can no longer properly digest food. The treatment for this is the (wonderfully named) “fecal transplant”. Over several weeks, the patient swallows capsules with the dried biome of a donor. This seeds their digestive system and later food can be again digested properly. Why am I mentioning this? Because if the donor was a diabetic, the recipient will likely become one. The odds are over 80%. This is with no change in diet or activity.

Doctors used to say (and many still do) that diabetes is insulin resistance, or a tired pancreas, etc. We are now finding out that it is a digestive system issue. If it was a “tired pancreas”, for example, it does not suddenly become “untired” when a gastric bypass is performed. How could insulin resistance stop when a gastric bypass is performed?
Insurers, some providers, the US military and others are now trying to locate the ideal/good/bad, etc., bacteria, enzymes, etc. that we need to have in our digestive system and the balance that works best.

  2. ADA are a bunch of quacks and hacks… do your own research… exercise and watch what you eat.. I eat an extremely low carb diet and exercise… i was able to get off my Glyburide and insulin within 1 week… hoping to get of my Metformin soon!

  3. While I hope that Apple can develop glucose sensors for the Apple Watch I believe that the near term advancements will be 24 hour a day sensors worn on the abdomen, with or without integrated integration to insulin pumps. This approach allows for two sticks a day for calibration and after that things will be controlled from the Watch or iPhone.

In terms of costs, each time you take a reading you have spent around 50 cents. Those costs can be reduced with automatic testing and treatment. When that is tied to health systems like Apple has there can be significant improvements at the national level.

  4. I had no idea that I had type II diabetes. I was diagnosed at age 50, after complaining to my doctor about being very tired. There is no family history of this disease. I’m a male and at the time of diagnosis, I weighed about 215. (I’m 6’2″)Within 6 months, I had gained 30 to 35 pounds, and apparently the diabetes medicines (Actos and Glimiperide) are known to cause weight gain. I wish my doctor had mentioned that, so I could have monitored my weight more closely. I was also taking metformin 1000 mg twice daily December 2017 our family doctor started me on Green House Herbal Clinic Diabetes Disease Herbal mixture, 5 weeks into treatment I improved dramatically. At the end of the full treatment course, the disease is totally under control. No case blurred vision, frequent urination, or weakness
