Apple sets date to turn over cloud operations to a state-owned data center in China

“Apple Inc. said it will turn over its cloud operations in China to a state-owned local partner [on] Feb. 28, complying with Chinese law mandating that customer data collected on the mainland be stored here,” Yoko Kubota reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“With the handover, photos, documents and messages uploaded by Apple users throughout China will be stored at a data center in the southwest province of Guizhou operated by the local partner, Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry Co., Ltd,” Kubota reports. “Apple said that over the next seven weeks it will seek to make sure customers know about the coming changes, adding that the company “has strong data-privacy and security protections in place and no backdoors will be created into any of our systems.””

“Last year, following Beijing’s requests, Apple shut down hundreds of virtual private network apps, or VPNs, that allow users to access blocked websites,” Kubota reports. “Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook defended that action at a business forum last month in Guangzhou, saying Apple needs to abide by Chinese laws so it can participate in the market and not be a bystander.”

MacDailyNews Take: Cook, the newly-minted winner of the Newseum’s 2017 Free ExpressionAward, is trying to walk a line so fine in China that it doesn’t exist. It’s an impossible act to pull off.

    1. Essay question for 50% of your grade:

“I believe that Apple has the wrong approach to China, and here is my practical alternative.” Expand by listing specific positive things to do, not just things you would NOT do.

    1. The Tank Man of Tiananmen Square.六四事件

Bravest thing I remember ever seeing and the US sold it’s soul to do business with the evil regime that crushed a peaceful democracy movement. Apparently cheap Chinese goods are more important than human freedom and democracy. That would have been George Herbert Walker Bush, POTUS.

      1. The sad truth, “Cash is King” is operative Humans get all bent out of shape when greed is on the table.
Help me understand how, besides a compromise of freedom ideals, this couldn’t also mean a information/security compromise?

        1. The sad truth is that every President of both parties and Congress have been complicit in this. They gave China Most Favored Nation Trade Status, let them in the WTO and all the rest.

China conducted a witch hunt for anyone involved in the Democracy Movement for year and executed many after kangaroo courts. Execution was commonly by pistol and the government even charged the family of the deceased with the price of the bullet.

For many years high end US branded goods was being produced in Chinese state owned factories staffed with political prisoners- people who wanted to worship as they saw fit or wanted to actually vote for leadership. Our government knew this, our media knew this, many people knew this and yet they bought the stuff.

This all happened just after the Berlin Wall fell and standing against this kind of shit for 4 decades kept the peace until the people of Europe had had enough and sent the Russians packing. I served in the US Army during that time and have literally stood on the Border where the Warsaw Pact and NATO would have fought World War II out with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment of VII Corps back in the day.

The events happened to coincide with the visit of Gorbachev to China with lots of world media attention. The Chinese shut down the satellites and then massacred the peaceful citizens. Bush- who was Nixon’s envoy to Communist China- decided as President to stand with the Communists and we have been there ever since.

For those too young, here is some of the live coverage from that event. Our government and companies chose the ChiComs over the citizens wanting democracy.

    2. Hypocrisy galore on this site.
When it comes to USA most everyone here bashes Tim : ” Tim Stop the Advocacy and focus on buisness”

Well thats what he is doing in China ‘ staying out of advocacy and focusing on whats best for business’ plus he has to obide by the local laws.
Yet , the same people here continue bashing him but now are saying ‘forget business Tim .. get involved in advocacy and politics’…….

May i remind you all : Apple is a buisness

Dont just complain.. offer a plausible alternative as ‘Txuser’ wrote above.

  1. This concept is quite important to me “has strong data-privacy and security protections in place and no backdoors will be created into any of our systems.”

This puts a damper on any organization governmental or not be it China, Apple’s home nation, or any other country that might think of sinking to such low levels.

And Apple is abiding by Chinese laws doing business, respecting the sovereignty of other nations sure is a far cry from the approach of the government of Apple’s home nation.

      1. That will be 2024 but in the meantime your nation can save a lot of money if it cut their payments to what they should be.

Now to address the point you brought up about the issue at hand…oh wait, there is nothing, just that ad hominem attack. Good thing I’m not waiting for something like that from you, I suspect it would take a bit longer than 2024.

  2. Even though this server would cover only China, from what I can read, cloud service, server and China don’t mix too well, and I feel uneasy about it. They are all connected anyway. Chinese dynasty worshipping Cook…. sigh….

  4. The great Social Justice Warrior Tim Crook, selling out to the Chinese Gestapo so he can sell more iPhones to China.

What a pathetic man he is. Cook is going to have blood on his hands once the roundup begins in China.
