“Apple Inc. said it will turn over its cloud operations in China to a state-owned local partner [on] Feb. 28, complying with Chinese law mandating that customer data collected on the mainland be stored here,” Yoko Kubota reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“With the handover, photos, documents and messages uploaded by Apple users throughout China will be stored at a data center in the southwest province of Guizhou operated by the local partner, Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry Co., Ltd,” Kubota reports. “Apple said that over the next seven weeks it will seek to make sure customers know about the coming changes, adding that the company “has strong data-privacy and security protections in place and no backdoors will be created into any of our systems.””
“Last year, following Beijing’s requests, Apple shut down hundreds of virtual private network apps, or VPNs, that allow users to access blocked websites,” Kubota reports. “Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook defended that action at a business forum last month in Guangzhou, saying Apple needs to abide by Chinese laws so it can participate in the market and not be a bystander.”

Bravest thing I remember ever seeing and the US sold it’s soul to do business with the evil regime that crushed a peaceful democracy movement. Apparently cheap Chinese goods are more important than human freedom and democracy. That would have been George Herbert Walker Bush, POTUS.
But..but..what of the stockholders? The poor innocent stockholders? Some may even be children.
The sad truth, “Cash is King” is operative Humans get all bent out of shape when greed is on the table.
Help me understand how, besides a compromise of freedom ideals, this couldn’t also mean a information/security compromise?
The sad truth is that every President of both parties and Congress have been complicit in this. They gave China Most Favored Nation Trade Status, let them in the WTO and all the rest.
China conducted a witch hunt for anyone involved in the Democracy Movement for year and executed many after kangaroo courts. Execution was commonly by pistol and the government even charged the family of the deceased with the price of the bullet.
For many years high end US branded goods was being produced in Chinese state owned factories staffed with political prisoners- people who wanted to worship as they saw fit or wanted to actually vote for leadership. Our government knew this, our media knew this, many people knew this and yet they bought the stuff.
This all happened just after the Berlin Wall fell and standing against this kind of shit for 4 decades kept the peace until the people of Europe had had enough and sent the Russians packing. I served in the US Army during that time and have literally stood on the Border where the Warsaw Pact and NATO would have fought World War II out with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment of VII Corps back in the day.
The events happened to coincide with the visit of Gorbachev to China with lots of world media attention. The Chinese shut down the satellites and then massacred the peaceful citizens. Bush- who was Nixon’s envoy to Communist China- decided as President to stand with the Communists and we have been there ever since.
