“An overheated iPhone battery injured a repairman in an Apple store in Zurich and prompted the evacuation of around 50 people from the shop on Tuesday due to smoke, Swiss police said,” Michael Shields reports for Reuters.
“Zurich police said the incident occurred as the repair worker was removing the battery, which overheated and burned his hand slightly,” Shields reports. “‘At the same time, there was a slight build-up of smoke, which led to around 50 customers and employees having to leave the business temporarily,’ a police statement said.”
“Seven people received medical treatment but did not need to be hospitalised,” Shields reports. “Forensic specialists were examining what caused the incident, police said.”

This happens often. It would have happened in “the back” (not in customer view). It can happen when a battery gets incorrectly handled or punctured with a screw (common). The room in which repairs are done have material to safely handle thermal events and employees who fix batteries are trained in safety procedures. Nothing to see here.

Oh, maybe that the same throttling techniques they use on the phone have been employed for years on the laptops and that’s why they perform like dogs as they age?
This is the first report I’ve seen about this incident where it points out that the iPhone was being serviced. All the other reports imply that the exploding iPhone went off in the showroom under normal use. People are making the most of the opportunity to make comments likening iPhones to exploding Samsung phones.
No matter about anything except MDN’s take. Not good publicity for Apple.
